Chinese ZodiacChinese Zodiac According to Chinese legend, the twelve

animals quarreled one day as to who was tohead the cycle of years. The gods were askedto decide and they held a contest: whoeverwas to reach the opposite bank of the river

would be first, and the rest of the animalswould receive their years according to theirfinish.

All the twelve animals gathered at the riverbank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, therat had jumped upon his back. As the ox wasabout to jump ashore, the rat jumped off theox's back, and won the race. The pig, whowas very lazy, ended up last. That is why therat is the first year of the animal cycle, the oxsecond, and the pig last.
