What a time it is to be a Sailor Moon fan! As this year's 20th Anniversary celebrations grew nearer, we saw the anime begin its international revival; the updated 2003 reprint manga was also translated into English, incorporating Codename: Sailor V for the very first time. Fabulous new merchandise hit mainstream stores. And now, the community has been rocked by the announcement that, summer of 2013, a brand new Sailor Moon anime will be airing simultaneously worldwide. The fans' spirits have never been higher, and they're showing their support with waves of art, stories, cosplay, craft, blogs – the list is endless. So, in light of our beloved series finding yet another revival, it seemed the perfect time to bring a childhood dream to fruition; a Sailor Moon magazine, for fans, by fans. And here it is!Lunacy aspires to bring you reviews, recommendations, graphics and games; reflections on how the series has inspired us, and our hopes for its future. Our articles aim to entertain you, inform you, and grow with you. We also invite you, the readers, to contribute and make Lunacy something special for all fans! We always welcome submissions, especially for our Sailor Sightings and Fanmade Finds. If you scout out a story – no pun intended – we'll even accept full articles. Hi everyone! This is my first merchandise review with Lunacy Magazine and I can't wait to get started! We will be reviewing the new GE Sailor Moon throw blanket in this issue. I purchased mine from eBay for $27 + $3.95 shipping. When I first opened the package, everything was pretty expected and standard. There is a cardboard sleeve and several plastic tags that hold the blanket in place. Just a quick note to be careful when removing the plastic tags, if you pull too hard you may tear the fabric and make a hole!

Once you open it up, it is huge! 50" x 60" to be exact. It is quite the perfect size, it's big enough to completely wrap around your body but not so big that it's too heavy to carry around the house. The material is super soft and cuddly, it will for sure keep you warm and toasty! I took a couple close up pictures so hopefully you can tell what the fabric is like. The seams are

There is one thing I personally didn't like very much about this blanket and that was the white colouring. I would have preferred if Sailor Moon was coloured in or at least all pink. Having white on blankets doesn't appeal to me since it'll easily get dirty. For what it cost I would hate to see it worn-in after a few uses. The design is very girly, I like the pink starry theme, but it's not for everyone. Not to worry though, GE does have a second blanket in the works and that one is not pink at all!Overall I would definitely recommend getting this super cute blanket - it's not the cheapest one out there but it is Sailor Moon! After all everything is more fun with Sailor Moon right?! Besides; now is a great time for fans to start on their Sailor Moon-themed bedroom.

Since we are celebrating "beginnings" with this issue, what better encompasses that than the item that made everything possible: Sailor Moon’s transformation brooch. Which of us wasn’t a wide-eyed excited mess at that first call of “Make-Up!”, watching films of ribbon explode from the curious item and change a sleepy schoolgirl into the iconic warrior that would come to wield the most potent power of the cosmos at her fingertips? In every battle the brooch was a constant center, resting over the heart, her most powerful weapon.

To this day feminine trinkets get a bad rep. The assumption associated with them is one of idle vanity, frivolity, and helplessness. Sailor Moon’s creator Naoko Takeuchi, herself inclined to high fashion and “girly” pursuits, turned that notion on its head. In Takeuchi’s mythology, amulets and jewelry were no longer a symbol of the frail and silly, but rather power and agency. The brooch, in its multiple incarnations, became a symbol of birth and rebirth, and never-ending reserves of strength. In its essential solidity, it was something tangible to touch and hold onto, an absolutely unique treasure reminding our heroine time and time again to be confident, dutiful, and proactive in her destiny.

Bows, stars, moons, ribbons, hearts, and gems are all motifs from the brooch as well as the greater aesthetic backbone of series that can manifest in personal style in a number of ways. Vintage items in particular have an intricate, antiquated and one-of-a-kind quality reminiscent of Sailor Moon’s. Perhaps we can’t recreate the exact brand of magic Takeuchi prescribed, but we can collect our own similarl baubles as personal emblems of strength that will, at the very least, remind us that being girly is not shameful.

Sailor TrinketsIn the third episode of the anime, we are introduced to the disguise pen. Luna does her magic back-flip and presents Usagi with a transformation pen that allows her to wear whatever she wants. In the manga, Usagi gets it herself after kicking around an arcade game. While the use of the pen maybe peaked in the ballroom scene later in Season 1 (or Act 4 of the first manga) and was cleverly replaced with cellphone cameras in PGSM, the pen is still one of the most elusive and desired Sailor Moon collectibles! Usagi and Luna relive their earliest adventures in this 1920×1080 wallpaper made as a celebration of the news.

This handy bag folds away into a small, easy-to-grab ball shaped like Luna-P!Keep it in your car or bag for shopping trips, take your sandals and sunscreen in it when you go to the beach, carry your books and snacks on your way to a group study session at Rei's... this versatile cutie will always be happy to transform and help out!

You will need:♥ Thin fabric in your choice of pattern/colour♥ Purple-grey fabric for the Luna-P corner♥ Thin cord for the drawstring (preferably black)♥ 1 cord puller toggle (preferably yellow/gold)♥ Fabric paint in pink, white, blue and yellow♥ Optional : Fabric pens, or other permanent pens suitable for drawing on fabric♥ Super glue / hot glue gun to seal cord♥ Needle & thread (including grey thread)

First, you need to make your bag. This is a straight-forward and easy bit of sewing. The dimensions should be 40x40 cm for the body of the bag, with an extra 10 or 20 cm on the end for the handles. If you want to sew together the handles on opposite sides of the bag, you only need to leave 10 cm. You can also sew together the handles on the same side, leaving 20 cm. The handles are 5 cmwide with 1 cm on each side left for hemming. Letting the fold where the material was doubled over be the bottom of the bag will save some stitching.

You will want the handles to be distanced slightly from the edge of the bag; trace around something circular, like a mug or small bowl, to keep these curves uniform.Hem the edges of the handles, then sew the bag together. Don't forget to work inside-out!

When you have the main bag sewn, it's time to work on the smaller Luna-P bag that will go on the outside. Scrunch your big bag up to see the smallest it will become, then roughly measure its diameter. Add on a few centimetres to allow for its height, though the triangular shape of the smaller bag will allow for most of the extra bulk. On your doubled-up grey fabric, measure a right-angle triangle with a height equal to your previous measurement; for us, that was 15 cm. Now add an extra 2 cm or so on the bottom; this is where the cord will be sewn in.

Hint: Making both bags separately minimizes weak

points and ensures structural integrity.

Finally, cut a gentle curve from the bottom right corner of your triangle.

Don't Make Our Mistakes: We recommend you make the curve bigger than we did here! This will make your gathered-up bag more circular

than tear-drop shaped.

Before you sew up your smaller bag, you should make the Luna-P's ears. These are just two triangular pieces of fabric folded over, sewn on one edge and leaving the shortest edge open.

Now you paint on your Luna-P's face!

Don't Make Our Mistakes: Our photos show the smaller bag already sewn, but painting the

face before your fabric is stitched together will give you a flatter, more even surface.

Don't just paint free-hand! Measure and cut out stencils from paper or cardboard to make sure that your shapes are uniform.

Here's our result, using stencils of the finest scrap paper. We made our face more catlike, with

the eyes further apart; put them closer together for a more show-accurate Luna-P.

When the paint is completely dry - it will likely need more than one coat - use your fabric/permanent pens to add outlines to the features, to disguise any feathered edges the paint might leave.Follow the instructions that came with your paint + pens for how to set them onto the fabric; this is usually ironing your design for a few minutes.Now it's time to sew the smaller bag together. Since you are working inside-out, pin your pre-sewn cat ears between the two pieces of fabric on the inside of the smaller bag, with the ear's open edge facing out.

Don't Make Our Mistakes: We suggest you put the cat ears lower on your bag than we did.

Make sure that you keep them away from your 2 cm edge for the cord!

Pin the rest of the bag and sew it together, making sure to sew through the cat ears when you reach them, then turn your bag right-side-out. Your cat ears should be firmaly attached and poking through on the outside!

If you have been using a sewing machine up until now, you will probably need to hand-sew this step.

Hint: Put a piece of cardboard or thicker material in your larger bag so that you don't

accidentally sew the two sides together.

You're almost finished! You should now have a larger bag with a smaller drawstring bag sewn over one corner, and the cord snugly lying between them. Now all you need to do is cut the cord to size and add your cord-puller toggle. Fully expand your smaller drawstring bag to see how much cord you will need. Let the cord extend about 5-7 cm beyond the edge of your bag, or enough to tie a knot. Wrap some tape around this point and cut through it - this will avoid any frayed ends. Now thread both ends through your cord-puller, and tie a knot. Seal this knot with super glue or a hot glue gun. Cut off the extra cord at the end of the knot, and seal these ends similarly.

Hint: If you pick acord puller in yellowor gold, it will look likethe ball on the endof Luna-P's aerial!

You're done! Now you have your very own transforming Luna-P bag!

Now take your cord and fold your extra 2 cm of material over it, turning the material into a fabric tunnel for your cord, pinning as you go.

Take your larger bag and put the corner of it into your smaller bag. Go through the pins you just used to make your drawstring tunnel, and adjust them one-by-one so that each pin attaches the smaller bag to the larger bag in addition to keeping the cord in place.

Following these pins, you are going to sew the smaller bag to the larger bag, sewing in the cord as you go. As you go, check periodically to make sure the cord can still move freely and hasn't been sewn or pinned anywhere.

Are you a big craft nut with your ownSailor Project? We'd love to see it!

If I had to wager, I would say that most people reading this got into the Sailor Moon fandom thanks to DiC's English dub, and I'm proud to say that I'm one of them, too. If you've never seen it, then you've probably at least heard that it was not very representative of the original material. While this is true, I do think that as long as you're not expecting a faithful adaptation, there is some value to watching the dub. One of the things DiC did when it had the rights to dub the series was write completely new musical scores; I can't recall many, if any, instances where original music was used.

That being said, one piece of original music DiC “used” quite a bit was the Moonlight Densetsu melody. The theme song for their dub is a reimagining of Moonlight Densetsu with extremely corny lyrics (and a guitar solo!). They echoed this melody as a motif in various places within their soundtrack, even played along with the episodes' title cards. Two pieces of background music on the Full Moon Collection CD that include this motif are Melvin and Receiving Waves, Part 3. “Melvin” sounds like it would be at home on Disc One of the soundtrack for a Japanese RPG. As its name suggests, it was mostly used for whenever the character Melvin appeared on screen. Its guitars and piano create a safe environment for the listener, signaling a light-heartedness or goofy comic relief that fit Melvin's character, a cheery optimism that was most common in the show's first story arc.

Around the song's half-way point, the main instrumentals detour for a simple arrangement of the Moonlight Densetsu melody on electric piano without accompaniment.

At first, I didn't like this, but it's really quite a nice way to break up the song and give the listener something slightly familiar to digest. The electric piano eventually deviates from Moonlight Densetsu, leading back to the main instrumentation, combining with the piano for the finale.

One of my favorite little things in music is when a song deviates into something else entirely before coming back to where it left off. “Melvin” is my favorite piece of background music on the Full Moon Collection; If I had to inject one of DiC's songs into the original Sailor Moon soundtrack, this would be my choice, without question. “Receiving Waves, Part 3” is almost the polar opposite of “Melvin”. This song is used when the Negaverse's schemes would start to take root, but before they had revealed themselves completely, such as the Gym Shapely exercise montage in American Episode 3 Slim City. The song reflects this usage well, being very dark and foreboding in the beginning, with its opening synth and brief percussion from the disc's Tuxedo Mask track - but it becomes lighter with another rendition of the Moonlight Densetsu melody, broken up with synth brass lines. If you love drums, then this song is highly recommended, with the drumming being one of the piece's strongest points.
