Luisa (1914–1990) and Ico Parisi (1916 –1996)
Antike. Ico bezeichnete sich selbst als
Renaissance Künstler, der in allen Metiers zu
Hause sein wollte. I Es stellt sich die Frage,
inwieweit beide Künstler an dem zeitgenös-
sischen Kunstdiskurs teilnahmen. Zumindest
dekorierten sie nicht. Sie hatten sich einem
klassizistischen, schöpferischen Grundgedan-
ken verschrieben. Beide hatten Umgang mit
den wichtigen Architekten der Zeit in Italien.
Ico fotografierte in den 930er Jahren für
Giuseppe Terragni.
genannt hatte. Im Interview mit Enrico Crispoloti
erklärte er: „Man and his existential problems
are here the subject. His spiritual needs rather
than his material ones are taken into consider-
ation. This can also be thought of as a therapeu-
tic action. Everybody’s need of solitude is seen
as the primitive stage of a research directed to
self-knowing and to a clarification of our coex-
istence within society.“II Diese Überlegungen
sind am Büroensemble für die Casa Zucchi
(Abb. 3 - 6) abzulesen. Die Bedürfnisse des
Menschen stehen im Mittelpunkt. Die Mö-
belkörper reduzieren sich auf einen klassischen
Aufbau mit Sockel— und Abschlussleisten.
Angedeutet entweder durch einen Material-
wechsel oder eine Schattenfuge. Die Simplizität
dieser Formen mit Ihrer Aneinanderreihung
und Ordnung stellt sich nicht hinter die
Anforderungen seines Benutzers, sie
unterstreicht sie.
The door handle made from wood and brass at
the Positano cabinet (fig. 3) tells us about the
furniture and the work of Luisa and Ico Parisi.
A rectangular, rounded plate of metal is cut from
the bottom right and the top left side to a point
in the center, the two created metal slabs then
bent up in right angles and connected with a
section of wood. It is tapered towards both
ends where the metal is set in its center and
secured with screws. On the back of the sheet,
not visible for the user, are two screws that
affix the wood from behind through the cabinet
door. The wood forms the handle. The construc-
tion appears to be simple, however somehow
rough and certainly pragmatic, though lovely.
To the right of the door is a drawer, adorned
by a golden anodized aluminium strip. Under
the drawer, there is a second door that can
be opened by a recess that is revealed when
one opens the left door with the described
handle. The combination of these materials,
together with the chromed, square legs
and walnut seems overwhelming, improvised,
regional, generous.
The designs of the Architect couple stand in the
tradition of shape and form that begins in the art
of the ancient world. Ico referred to himself a
renaissance artist, who wanted to be at home in
all professions. The question remains as to what
extent both artists participated in the discourse
of contemporary art. At least they did not merely
decorate. They devoted themselves to a
neo– classical, creative fundamental idea. Both
had contact with the important architects of
the time in Italy: Ico made photography in the
930’s for Giuseppe Terragni, and Luisa studied
8
9
under Gio Ponti. At the end of the 940’s they
would develop their own style, one with biomor-
phic shapes that were either combined with a
clear structure or framed by one. Experimenta-
tion with shape in the space were developed,
such can be seen on the table for the Casa Keller
(fig. 42). Here the elegance of a Paulo Buffa,
with whom Ico had carried out joint projects,
stands against a systematization of the form.
Convention such as the frame under the table
top are dissolved, and therefore it is left out
on one side. The 950s saw a revision in the
Parisi’s furniture towards a language that can
be located between a monumental Terragni and
a Studio BBPR driven by the construction itself.
The style is very close to Albini as well, but
with less longing for universal validity. This is
a less dogmatic language that place the furniture
and its use in the center. A type of architectur
parlante that does not speak over its utility, but
rather over its development and its construction.
This reaches on the one hand to a neo liberty
design (fig. 6 or 22), or on the other hand, to a
sober system such as the Urio series (fig. 2
and 38), with a continuous line of handles made
from wood and aluminum.
In 93 Ico Parisi introduced a project for
a house which he called “Ipotesi per una casa
esistenziale”. In an interview with Enrico
Crispoloti, he explained: “Man and his existential
problems are here the subject. His spiritual
needs rather than his material ones are taken
into consideration. This can also be thought
of as a therapeutic action. Everybody’s need of
solitude is seen as the primitive stage of a
research directed to self-knowing and to a
clarification of our coexistence within society.”II
These considerations can be witnessed in the
office ensemble for the Casa Zucchi (fig. 3–6).
The needs of the person stand in the center.
The furniture bodies are reduced to a classic
construction with socket strips and frieze strips.
Indicated either through a change of material
or a shadow joint, the simplicity of these forms
with its sequence and order does not stand
behind the requests of its user; it underlines it.

angewandt.
Using legs that are reaching high above the
middle of the back rest to support these, Luisa
and Ico Parisi used this type of the construction
for seating in wood.
