I love insider tips f rom locals andseveral of my German f riends had allgiven me the same one – go to theLudwigsburg Christmas Market.

Germany is famous for its Christmas markets andthere’s a large one in Stuttgart where I live, but Iwas told that while the Ludwigsburg one was muchsmaller, it was the one preferred by most ofStuttgart locals and it is only 20km from Stuttgart. Even J.P. recommended it and said we should goand being a typical German guy he doesn’ttypically get too excited about anything -especially German Christmas Markets. I wasthere faster than you could say “Merry Christmas”.

The Ludwigsburg Christmas Market is in thehistoric city square nestled between two churches, lined with buildings hundreds of years old. We went on a coldSunday night thinking it wouldn’t be that busy – we were wrong, it was packed.

Adding to the already storybook ambianceare lighted larger than life angels hoveringover the German Christmas Market. I am notparticularly religious, but did find it rathercomforting, although had I been one of theteenagers sneaking off to make out with myboyfriend, I’m not sure I would have felt thesame about those angels, which really arequite big!

As I quickly discovered, Germans are notthere primarily for the beautifully hand craftedgoods. The largest crowds gather in otherplaces at the German Christmas Markets –around the mulled wine and the food stands. No matter I like living here so much!
