  • CA brings the following benefits:

    Maximized utilization of time-frequency resources

    CA UE can use idle resource blocks (RBs) on two CCs to minimize the waste

    of resources

    Efficient utilization of non-contiguous spectrum chunks

    With CA, an operator's non-contiguous spectrum chunks are aggregated

    for efficient utilization, especially in spectrum refarming scenarios.

    Better user experience

    With CA enabled in 2x2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios, a

    single CA UE can reach a downlink peak data rate of 300 Mbit/s.

  • Carrier management involves addition, activation, deactivation, and removal of an SCell for

    a UE.

  • The frequency information of SCell should be configured in the PCell in advanced. If UE is

    capable for CA, and eNodeB will activate the measurement for SCell frequency by default.

    It utilizes the specific A4 and A2 event for PCell management. The event descriptions are

    the same as handover, but the threshold could be separated.

    When a UE sends an A4 measurement report that contains a cell whose RSRP exceeds the

    related threshold for event A4 and that is in the same CA group as the PCell, the eNodeB

    delivers an RRC Connection Reconfiguration message to the UE to configure the cell as an

    SCell for the UE.

  • After the SCell is configured for a UE, the eNodeB can take the following carrier

    management actions if CarrierMgtSwitch is set to ON:

    When the traffic volume of the UE is low, the eNodeB can deactivate the SCell to

    reduce UE power consumed by data transmission/reception and blind decoding, as

    well as overhead for uplink channel state information (CSI) reporting.

    When the traffic volume of the UE is high, the eNodeB can quickly activate the

    SCell to increase the UE throughput.

    Otherwise, eNodeB will directly activate the Scell after configuration.

  • After the SCell is configured for a UE, the eNodeB can take the following carrier

    management actions if CarrierMgtSwitch is set to ON:

  • PCell is changed through an RRC Connection Reconfiguration procedure, which is

    equivalent to a handoverprocedure in the PCell change scenario. The SCell is added or

    removed also through an RRCConnection Reconfiguration procedure, which is not a

    handover procedure in the Scell configuration scenario.

  • CA UE sends A3 measurement reports in the PCell. The eNodeB delivers an RRC

    Connection Reconfiguration message to remove the SCell and then performs an intra-

    frequency handover for the UE.

    If CA is enabled for the new PCell (that is, the target cell of the handover), the serving

    eNodeB delivers an A4 measurement configuration to the UE after the RRC connection is

    established. Later, if the UE sends A4 measurement reports that contain a cell (for example,

    cell 1) in the same CA group as the new PCell, the eNodeB configures cell 1 as an Scell for

    the UE.

  • During the inter-frequency handover, the target PCell might be the SCell in the same CA

    group of the source eNodeB. As a result, it is likely that the UE is handed over from its

    PCell to its SCell.

    active after being configured, a CA UE can use the SCC immediately when the traffic

    volume is large.
