• Upgrade of cooling unit for the lab : from 60 kW to 230 kW cooling power-end 2004– Use air from tunnel as « cold source »

• Radon free air installation (0.2 Bq/m3)– October 2004

• Edelweiss II installation– October 2004 - june 2005

How to measure 13 and

Study e oscillations at first maximum

L= 500 km/GeV x E

with E = 260 MeV (see later CERN beams) then L= 130 km

compare amplitudes for neutrinos and antineutrinos = A2 + S2 + 2AS sin

= A2 + S2 - 2AS sin

atm) = 21/2 13

S (sun) ~ 0.04 for LMA

but need high intensity beam ie MW proton beam…

An ideal complementary e beam : the « beta beam »

Concept proposed by Piero Zucchelli at CERN•Produce radioactive ions (ISOL technique), 6He and 18Ne•Accelerate them in the CERN accelerator complex up to of order 100, to produce 0.3 GeV neutrinos•Store ions in a storage ring with long straight sections aimed at a far detectorAdvantages :•strongly focussed neutrino beam due to small Q value of beta decays•very pure flavour composition ( contamination ~ 10 -4 )•perfectly known energy spectrum http://beta-beam.web.cern.ch/beta-beam/

Outlook

• NB : advantages of Fréjus site– Good and known rock, horizontal access– Central location in Europe, easy access by train, car, plane,

ski…– Right distance to CERN for n osc studies

• Feasability study under way – Cavities shape, rock extraction and evacuation, cost

• PMT technology and R&D underway• Formation of collaboration

– Working group : coordinator J Bouchez (Saclay) [email protected]

– NNN (Neutrino and Nucleon decay) workshop in spring 2005 at Aussois, near Modane, organised together with UNO US collab

• Welcome…
