• Who is worthy of salvation? 1) Some are worthy, some are not. God will save the worthy. 2) All are unworthy. All whom God saves are unworthy. • Who are “sinners”? 1) Those who have done things too bad for God and people who are

“righteous” to receive them back 2) Everyone • I once was asked when I used 1 Tim 1:12-17 to justify preaching the gospel

to men in prison- “Can a prison inmate be compared to the apostle Paul?” What do you say, can they?

• During Jesus’ ministry, He showed and taught an unconditional love- That all- not some- are sinners; that all-not some are unworthy of salvation- But love gives salvation to the unworthy sinner.

Brief survey of Luke and Jesus’ encounters with “sinners”:

• 5:27-32: Levi (Matthew)• 7:39-50: woman who was a “sinner”• 15:1-2: parables (lost sheep, lost coin, lost son) taught because Jesus received “sinners”• 18:9-14: parable of the Pharisee and the publican• 19:1-10: Zaccheus, Jesus came to seek and to save the lost.

• Now on the Cross, there is yet one more “sinner” to seek and to save; as Jesus faced His death, He acted in a manner totally consistent with His life- yet one more example of unconditional love:

• Lk 23:33- Jesus is crucified between two thieves. With wicked men in His death and numbered with the transgressors (Is 53:9,12)

Lk 23:39-42- while one thief ridiculed Jesus, the other

1) admitted that he had done wrong2) saw his death as justice for his wrong3) professed faith in the innocence of Jesus4) professed faith that Jesus would be a King (way ahead of his time in this!)

Cp. Other reactions to Jesus having a kingdom:

• People: Jn 6:15 after feeding the 5000, they wanted to take Him by force and make Him king.

• Disciples: Mk 10:35-37 James and John wanted the right and left hand places in the kingdom

• Herod: Lk 23:11 after mocking Jesus and treating Him with contempt, Herod dressed Jesus in a gorgeous robe

• Pilate: Mt 27:27-31 Roman soldiers also played “dress up”, added crown of thorns & reed, knelt and mocked

• Accusation: Mt 27:37 that He was a King was the charge written over His head on the cross

• Bystanders: Mt 27:42 mocked Him, telling Him if He was the King to come down off the cross and prove it.

• Yet the thief said to a dying man, “remember me when you come into your kingdom”- faith that Jesus would still have a kingdom, that His kingdom was not earthly, and he wanted to be a part of it.

• Jesus’ response- forgiveness and salvation- “Today, you shall be with Me in Paradise”.

• When Jesus died, He went to Hades until the resurrection-Acts 2:31; Paradise= Abraham’s bosom, place of comfort- Lk 16:23-26. Thief would be there, too!- not go to torment!

Truly I Say to You Today

1. Truly I say to you today, You have owned up to all your sin; Though you’re a crim’nal I love you, Into My Kingdom enter in.

2. Truly I say to you today, you know I suffer for no wrong; I will forgive you of your sin, Your faith in Me is very strong.

3. Truly I say to you today, You still be-lieve I will be King; With My last words I grant your wish, You will in heav’n My praises sing.

4. Truly I say to you today, You shall be with Me in Paradise; O may your sins be blotted out, And hidden from My Father’s eyes.

Tune: Sun of My Soul

• Invitation: Rom 5:6-8. “What about the thief on the cross?” This is used to

say men do not have to comply with baptism- Mk 2:10- Jesus had power on earth to forgive sins; New Covenant not yet in effect- Heb 9:16-17;

• Jesus is not here to forgive sins, does so by the terms of His covenant, one of the conditions of forgiveness is baptism- through baptism we receive the benefits of the blood- cp. Heb 9:14; 1 Pet 3:21.
