Message from Administration….

Our first month of school has been a busy, productive and

an enjoyable one. Students have settled into the school

routine and we look forward to a wonderful fall,

particularly after such a long and unexpected heat wave.

The staff and students at LHF would like to express their

thanks to the parents/guardians who take the time to model

and observe traffic safety rules when picking up or drop-

ping off their children. Your willingness to take the time to

park safely on the street is much appreciated. We thank you

for your attention to the safety of all of our students and for

your good citizenship.

We seek the support and assistance of all of our families in

the safe and punctual arrival of our students at school. Our

instructional day begins at 9:20 a.m. Students may be

dropped off to the school yard as early as 9:05 a.m., when

supervision is provided. Persistent late arrivals result in

missed instructional time, thereby impacting student

achievement.

Finally, we invite and thank you for your participation in

our Big Box of Cards Fundraising Event. We are excited

about the upcoming changes and enhancements to our

library learning space. We also hope to see all of our

families at our Halloween Dance on the evening of October

26th. We would like to thank School Council and our fund-

raising committee who provide on-going support for our

students through events such as these.

Student Drop off/Student Pick-up

Many of our students take the bus to and from school. We have approximately 9 buses that come into and

go out of the school everyday. With this is mind, we have changed some of our procedures with the

number one goal of keeping our children safe. It is critical that we follow these procedures to avoid

putting students in danger. Buses drop off students in the morning in the school bus loop. This is the safest way for our students to

arrive at school since they are disembarking on school property. Children will proceed to the paved area

behind the school where there is teacher supervision from 9:05 am to 9:20 am. No cars should enter the

bus loop during this drop-off time. We ask those parents who drive their children to school to drop them off on Conley St. where we will

have a teacher on duty from 9:05-9:20 am who will direct the students to the same area behind the school.

If you arrive after 9:20 am please note that there is no supervision other than your own, and we ask you to

park your car and accompany your child into the school through the front door and to the office for a late

slip. Please note that our pick-up routine remains the same, with the bus loop used for buses (no cars may

enter) and Conley St. for parental pick-up. Teacher supervision at both places is between the times of

3:50-4:05. Please do not arrive late to pick up your child, but as emergencies

do arise, please inform us and we will arrange for your child to wait for you in

the office.

If you require any information on bussing, please visit the website at

www.schoolbuscity.com.

Attendance Line and Safe Arrival Program

If your child is going to be late, absent, on vacation or on a Religious

Holiday from school, please call our attendance line (905)907-7884 and

leave a message. The attendance line is available 24 hours a day. This will

ensure a safe arrival for all students!

PICKING UP AT THE CONLEY STREET ENTRANCE

Your child's safety is important to us! When picking up students from Conley Street, please be aware that

Grade One and Two students must be picked up at the opening in the fence. Students need to identify who

is picking them up to the teacher on duty. This way, we know that your child is leaving with you and not a

stranger. Older students meet and/or wait for guardians on the grassy area outside the fence. Students

should enter cars from the side adjacent to the curb, not the side that opens onto moving traffic. Students

must not walk across Conley Street unless an adult is crossing alongside them. Students in grades 1 to 6

who have not been picked up by 4:05 will walk with the teacher to the office, where they will wait for you.

Grade 7 and 8 students may either wait on Conley or in the office if they have not been picked up by 4:05.

Please also note that parking is only permitted on the south side of Conley; you could receive a parking

ticket if you park on the north side.

If your child is to be picked up by someone else, please send a note in your child's agenda.

Cross Country Cross Country has started up again this year!! Students in grades 4 to 8 have been working

hard to get ready for the area meet coming up. That you to parent/guardians and to students

for your dedication.

The area meet will take place on Wednesday, October 11th and the Regional Meet will take place

on Tuesday, October 17th. Good luck to every athlete participating in this great event! Let's show our LHF team spirit! From proud X-Country Coaches.

INTERMEDIATE VOLLEYBALL

This year, we kicked off our Intermediate Volleyball season with

three weeks of intramural play. Over 100 grade 7s and 8s have

showed up to have some fun and spend some time competing against

friends. A big thanks goes out to every student who took some time to come

out and give it their best! Also, our competitive teams have been cho-

sen, and we are looking forward to a busy season. 9 boys and 10 girls

will represent LH Fréchette at several volleyball tournaments against

other schools. The teams will be training separately, three times a week in prepara-

tion for the Area Tournaments in October. Good luck to both teams! We look forward to Junior volleyball in mid November. M. Durand, Mme Khan and M. Wayling

PHOTO DAY All students will be photographed on Tuesday, October 3rd. Proofs will be sent home at a later date for you to preview before you buy or you can purchase online for more incentives. Photo Re-take day for those who have missed, will take place on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

Medication

All medication brought to school

must be kept in the office. If your child requires medication,

the necessary forms must be filled

out. Please see the office. Parents

who have been sent forms with

their child/children are asked to

return the forms and/or medica-

tions to the

office. Your co-operation is appreciated.

Messages for Students Our student population makes it virtually

impossible to relay personal messages to

students. Please ensure that your end-of-

day arrangements are clear BEFORE your

child leaves for school. We recommend

writing out-of -ordinary instructions in

your child’s agenda, or send a note to your

child’s teacher, especially for those stu-

dents in the younger grades. Please be

aware that if you need to pick up your

child early, you may not go to their

classroom to pick them up, you must

report to the office and we will call him/

her/them down. Thank you for your co-

operation!

Sabrina’s Law “and LHF “Sabrina’s Law” is in place at LHF. It is the legal precedent that requires all schools to en-sure that we are trained to deal with dangerous allergic reactions AND how to prevent them. The staff of LHF has received training in how to administer an Epi-Pen. Please read your child’s agenda to find critical information about how LHF deals with life threatening allergies. Also, please be reminded that you put children at serious risk when you bring food products into the school that are not made in a nut-free environment. Thank you for continuing to help us keep all chil-dren safe at school. Also, please remember that we are not able to distribute food items that are brought in for birthdays and other celebrations. If they are brought to school, we will have to send them home. Thank you very much for your support and cooperation as we work to keep all of our children safe at L.H. Fréchette.

Change of Personal Information It is vital to have up to date personal information, if you have made any changes to your

home, business or cell numbers or have a new address or emergency contacts please make sure that the office is informed. You may email the changes to either Mme Apa at [email protected] or Mme Pupo at [email protected]. Thank you.

Volunteers In The School Our Hot Lunch program’s success depends greatly on your generosity and participation. This program has greatly contributed to the technology and other resources we have available in our school to support your child's learning and classroom programming. To maintain the success of this program, we are seeking vol-unteers. We need volunteers to assist with the organization and distribution of the lunches. If you have time during the day, between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. any day of the week, and would like to volunteer your time, please send an email or phone the school. All volunteers who have direct contact with students MUST have a valid Police Vulnerable Sector

check. If you are planning to help on a field trip, drive students to athletic events, volunteer in the

school, etc., the Board now requires us to have volunteers submit a Police Vulnerable Sector report

(even if you have volunteered previously). Please get your police check as soon as possible as it

sometimes takes several weeks to process. Forms are available from the office. Your support is greatly appreciated!

School Assistant Positions Available for 2017-18 Parents/guardians or adult volunteers are invited to apply for the position of School Assistant (lunch/recess supervisor) for the school year. This is a paid position with the Board, where adults supervise students during the lunch hour. If you love children and have one or more days available to join us, we have the job for you. Please contact Teresa Pupo in the office or email [email protected] for more information. Thank you.

SCHOOL COUNCIL CORNER On Thursday, October 26th between 6pm and 8:00pm, grades 1 to 6, L.H. Fréchette will be holding its

Halloween School Dance for families of which 100% of the proceeds will

be used to support the School Council initiatives within our school. Some of the many items that School Council supports, either in their entirety, or as a subsidy are: Purchase of new school text books Purchase of new books for the literacy program Agendas Computers, smart boards Science equipment

Please come out with your families and show your support for Fréchette and have a spooky great time.

More scary details about the Halloween Dance to follow...

Kids Come First Kids Come First would very much appreciate if the

parents and monitors not park in the spots marked

with Daycare signs. There are always a number of

spots available for your use in front of the school or

at the south end of the parking lot.

We understand that it may be more convenient to use the spaces in

front of the childcare; however our staff are constantly transporting

foods and supplies back and forth from their cars necessitating the use

of the few spots in front of our centre. In addition should there be an

emergency we can quickly get our staff to move their cars whereas it

becomes difficult trying to find the owner of these cars helping out

somewhere in the school.

It would be very much appreciated if you could use the regular park-

ing spaces when visiting or helping out at the school.

NEXT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETINGS:

October 17 and November 14, 2017 at 7 p.m. You will be notified of the next meeting at the November meet-ing. All are welcome. Thank you from your School Council.

School councils help to strengthen the important relationship between schools, parents/guardians and their

communities. L.H. Fréchette is fortunate to have a large and committed School Council. All members of

the school community are welcome to attend council meetings. Parents/guardians and community mem-

bers are key to a successful school council. Getting involved gives you the opportunity to be part of a

team, working together with the school and the community to ensure ongoing student well-being and

achievement.

Our next meeting is October 17th at 7:00pm in the Staff Room. Come out and support our school at these upcoming events:

- Halloween Dance (Grades 1-6) - October 26th Details will be sent home soon!

Healthy Schools/Positive Climate Committee

The 2017-18 school year is off and running. Your Healthy School’s committee is gearing up for a great year. One of the things Healthy Schools will focus on this year is shaping the students’ attitudes and behaviours about physical activity and healthy living. We do this by running various programs such as

You’re the Chef the Big Crunch. On the active side we will again be having the Jump Rope for Heart. To make these programs possible, we need parents/guardians and student involvement. The Positive Climate focuses on inclusivity such as Days of Pink. Stay tuned for other fun events and the next meeting date. Any questions or to volunteer please contact: Judy at [email protected].

Environment Club and Eco-Team

We are a Platinum Eco-school! Congratulations Fréchette! L.H.F. is a Platinum Certified Eco-School for the fourth year in a row. Our Eco-team is

ever-growing. This year, the Eco-Team is led by Mme Tran, Mme Paul, Mme Mancuso and

Mme Di Tommaso. New members are always welcome!

Litter-less Lunches at L.H.F.

Please pack your child's lunch in reusable containers. Please use refillable water

bottles and remind your child/children to recycle and to put food waste in our green

bins located in each classroom. There are also green bins in all washrooms to collect

used paper towels only. Together let's try to reduce the waste in our school!

Take me outside day (October 12th)

Fréchette will be participating in Take Me Outside Day on Thursday,

October 12th! This event encourages students to turn off their technology,

conserve energy, and enjoy the great outdoors! You can support the planet

and reinforce these ideas by participating, too! Switch off your electronics

and play outside for one hour with your family.

INDOOR SHOES We would like to remind parents/guardians that it’s very important that your child/children have and use indoor shoes at school. The classrooms and especially our gym have been getting very dirty and with the wet and winter weather approaching, we would like to keep these areas as clean as possible. This is a safety issue as well as a general cleanliness issue. Please remind your child/children to always use their indoor shoes in the school. Thank you!

Halloween Message

Each year, our students celebrate the long-standing tradition of Halloween. This year we will be having our Halloween dance for

students on Tuesday, October 31st. Students celebrating this occasion in costume at our school must comply with York Region District School Board’s Safe Schools Policy #668.0. Stu-dents may not bring toy replicas or other items resembling guns, knives or any other weapons, as accessories to their Halloween costumes. Such items may cause unnecessary fear, anxiety and misunderstanding and must be kept away from the school. In addition, staff has reminded students that they cannot bring to school any toy costume accessories, including fake blood, as part of their Halloween costume. Please note that this policy applies to all students at all levels. Thank you for your understanding. As always, if you have questions, please con-tact your child’s teacher or a member of the administration at the school.

CAN I PICK UP MY CHILD/CHILDREN AT LUNCH? If you wish to pick up your child during the lunch time, please pick up your child by

1:10pm. If you wish to pick up your child after lunch, please pick up your child after 2:20 pm. We are not able to go out on the yard to look for your child when he/she is outside for the

recess portion of the lunch.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

LHF is a Scent Free School

We continue to work hard towards establishing a fragrance free school environment. Please be aware of the issue of

fragrance sensitivity. When we talk about “fragrance”, we usually mean the smells or odours from cosmetics

(perfume, make-up, shampoo, deodorant, etc) or from other products such as air fresheners, cleaners, etc. When a

product is listed as Fragrance Free or Unscented, this means that there have been no fragrances added to the cosmetic

product, or that a masking agent has been added in order to hide the scents from the other ingredients in the cosmetic.

When scented products have been blamed for adversely affecting a person’s health, some or all of the following

symptoms are reported:

• Headaches • Dizziness, light-headedness • Nausea • Fatigue • Weakness • Insomnia

• Malaise • Confusion • Loss of appetite • Depression • Anxiety • Numbness

• Upper respiratory symptoms • Shortness of breath • Difficulty with concentration

• Skin irritation

Allergic and asthmatic patients, as well as those with other conditions, report that certain odours, even in the smallest

amounts, can trigger an attack. The severity of these symptoms can vary. Some people report mild irritation while

others are incapacitated and/or must give up many ‘normal’ activities in order to avoid exposure (such as going to

public places). Fragrances or scents are included in a very large range of products including:

Shampoo and conditioners • Hairsprays • Deodorants • Colognes and aftershaves • Fragrances and perfumes

• Lotions and creams • Potpourri • Industrial and household chemicals • Soaps • Cosmetics

• Air fresheners and deodorizers • Oils • Candles • Diapers • Some types of garbage bags

It is important to remember some products which claim to be ‘fragrance free’ may have only masked the scent by use

of an additional chemical. Be sure to research the product carefully if using scented products around those who are

sensitive.

Thank you for your co-operation!
