“Where’s Wally?” As you read this the Paralympics will be under way and the end of London 2012 will be in sight. Those of you who read this letter may recall that in June 2011 I wrote about my daughter telling me to put in my bid for a ticket for the London Olympics. My response was: “I was thinking of leaving the country during the Olympics.”

Well, Sarah presented me with six tickets so off we went on Day 10 to the Olympic Stadium. I was right, it was crowded but the coffee was cheaper than expected, £2.80 and not £3.50 as predicted. The travelling to and from the Olympic Park, the welcome, the organisation and standard of building work, the layout were all exemplary and I was suitably impressed and shamed. It was great to be part of a crowd of 80,000 cheering on the competitors and our experience of the massive crowds negotiating the Park afterwards was remarkable. Generally people were being polite and helping each other rather than the expected High Street push and shove one tends to expect. There were lots of flags, fancy dress and people from all nations gathered to give their support to the competitors and hope for some medals for their country. Upon reflection, if I’d known you could wear fancy dress I’d have gone as ‘Where’s Wally’.

Pride goes before a fall and I surely fell. Whilst I’d never have bought a ticket it was a great experience and a real winner and I’m glad I went. I’ve now asked my daughter if she could do the same with a National Lottery ticket! If someone who loves me hadn’t bought me a ticket I would never have known what I could so easily have missed.

The Olympic runners of 2,000 years ago is what St Paul had in mind when he wrote his letter to the new Christians at Philippi: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Paul uses the language of an athlete to describe what we need to enter God’s Olympic Park — a fit and healthy faith in his Son who. has paid the price of entry and bought you a ticket.

Don’t be like me over the Olympics and run the risk of losing out on something breathtakingly wonderful which God wants to give you because he loves and cares for you. His Son has done the running, your prize awaits collection.

Welcome to the September edition of the “Link”. I had the unusual sight of a combine harvester getting bogged down in mud which gives some idea of how wet the summer has been! Not so long since the hosepipe ban.

The historic Stratfield Saye church has had a £50,000 makeover! The white paint on the outside walls, several decades old, was fading and flaking. The paint was causing problems, trapping the damp in the walls and making the plaster crumble. Now, thanks to a number of generous trusts and individuals, and to Stratfield Saye,

Basingstoke & Deane and Hampshire Councils, the money for the repair work has been raised. All the old paint has been cleared off, and the outside walls have been repointed and cleaned. This lovely and historic church now looks almost as good outside as when it was first built in 1756. Do come and see it – all are welcome at our services. Geoffrey Preston

Lord of all, as we thank you for our harvest we remember those whose harvest is poor or non-existent, those with insufficient resources to tend their land, those denied a just reward for their labours, those whose harvest has been destroyed in the chaos of war or by natural disaster. Help us Lord , as we celebrate our plenty to remember those who have so much less, the poor and needy of our world suffering famine or civil war on the brink of starvation.

Lord of all, speak to us at this season of harvest time so that our hearts may be stirred and our consciences quickened. “Epic"

was the verdict on the Sherfield summer tennis coaching!

Sixteen children aged 5-13 had fun and improved their skills during the week long course on the Goddard's Lane courts. Totally Tennis (based at Memorial Park) provided Ben the coach for the hour long sessions. There were two classes per day, running from 8-9am and 9-10am. It was a testament to how much the children enjoyed their time with Ben that they were always early and warming up before the official start time!!

Ben taught the children all the basic strokes and rules of the game using fun games, whilst constantly providing individual feedback to each player. From the youngest to the oldest, all participants not only enjoyed their tennis coaching, but felt they had improved tremendously.

Comments included "The coach was excellent, my son really liked him", "Please can we do it again?", "It was really fun" and "Can this be a regular activity, please?"

A big well done to the two young Bramley Primary School pupils, Phoebe Chave and Grace Merrin, for suggesting the tennis coaching and thank you to the Parish Council for agreeing to it. We hope the money raised goes some way to helping with the repairs to the tennis court.

Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council Community Speedwatch Community Speedwatch is a scheme that is operated in partnership with the police to ensure that those exceeding the speed limit on roads with a limit of 30mph or less are brought to the notice of the police. It involves members of the local community operating equipment at selected roadside locations to collect details of the speeding vehicles, which are entered on to a database. The owner of the vehicle is then sent an advisory letter from the police. If the same registration number is logged again within 12 months, the owner will receive a warning that, if the vehicle is seen speeding a third time, the details will be passed to an officer who may take further action. Volunteers must be aged at least 17 and each scheme needs a minimum of six volunteers. Applicants will need to complete an application form and vetting process which can take up to six weeks to clear. For more information on the scheme please visit the police website at www.hampshire.police.uk or contact the local beat officer WPC Mandy Jewell (07554 775617). If you would like to register your interest in becoming a volunteer then please contact the parish clerk (details below). Reporting highway defects Many residents contact the parish council to report highway problems and these are promptly reported to the Highways Authority. However, the parish council does not have access to priority reporting and is required to report the defects via the on-line system that is open to the general public. This may be found at: www3.hants.gov.uk/roadproblems. Alternatively, you may email [email protected] or phone 0845 603 5633. Play area safety surfacing replacement The parish council would like to thank residents for their co-operation during the recent safety surfacing replacement. This was scheduled to be completed before the start of the school holidays but, because of the wet weather, was delayed substantially. I hope you’ve had a relaxing summer. While there are no formal Council meetings in August, there has still been much to do!

As you may be aware, I have been working with Hampshire County Council to get highway improvements for Bramley and Sherfield. I am very pleased that this work has now begun in Bramley and I am working with the County and Parish Councils to get improvements in Sherfield as soon as possible.

It seems the developer of Razor’s Farm (which is located ‘behind’ Taylor’s Farm, on the Bramley-Chineham border, at the end of Cufaude Lane) would like to put a planning application forward before the Local Plan is complete. Alongside other local Councillors, I met with the developer to highlight my concerns about their plans for the site, which I hope they will take on board.

At the end of July, the Council accepted a recommendation from the Manydown Executive Committee, which I chair, to promote the Manydown land for consideration as part of the Local Plan, reversing the 2006 decision. However, I don’t want to mislead you into thinking that this means no building anywhere else – while Manydown may be able to take some housing, it will not provide all we need – so we must have a sensible, balanced discussion about where housing goes.

That said, I will continue to fight for the lowest possible housing numbers in Bramley and Sherfield, to prevent inappropriate development from taking place in our area.

The July and August Meetings were opened by our President, Dee Bulpitt, and Jerusalem was sung. The Business Meetings followed their usual pattern, Minutes were read, reports given and other matters dealt with, including our 90th Birthday in April 2013 and our outing to the D-Day Museum at Southsea in September.

Our July Meeting was our Summer Party and Dee had prepared two quizzes for us “60 Glorious Years” covering events during the Queen’s long reign and “Prime Ministers during the Queen’s Reign” (in date order). A delicious birthday tea followed. After the Business Meeting in August, we were given a very interesting talk with slides by Jill Daniels – “Where and What is That in Hampshire”. Members learnt unusual facts and stories about places in the county which gave ideas for unusual places to visit. Helen Rolton gave the Vote of Thanks and tea followed and the raffle was drawn.

The Shop in the Village

Twenty Seven years of Dodd’s magic and still going strong

The Shop in Sherfield has rightly become a village institution. However, I didn’t realise quite how long Ken, Julie and Paul Dodd and Steve Bachelor had been there. Amazingly, the 27th

anniversary comes up in October but,

chatting to Ken and looking back, things haven’t changed that much. The shop has expanded slightly since the early days. There‘s far more focus on fresh quality produce with more fridges and less freezers. New lines include freshly baked baguettes and pastries. There’s lots more wine being sold now and, where possible produce, is

sourced locally, for example fresh bread from Bramley.

However, the key ingredient, its welcoming atmosphere is still there and it is the place to go to bump (often literally) into local life. The many returning regulars attest to the quality of the goods and the warmth of the welcome, and as Ken and Julie both say, it’s the lovely people that

help them enjoy life at the shop.

Steve has been running the meat counter since the beginning and is justly famous for his butchery skills and quality of the meat. Just ask and he can get it for you.

Amongst everything else, Paul handles deliveries around the area and they are helped by a really friendly team. Vicky is seen modelling the latest delivery vehicle on the right.

This is clearly visible in the unique and contemporary design of House Twenty8. Wifi and loyalty cards are available and there is plenty of free parking opposite in the village car park. It was always important to Sarah to keep the post office running, which has serviced the village for many years. Sarah hopes House Twenty8 will become a well-supported addition to the village.

Speed Enforcement:

I carried out speed enforcement duties in July & August

Solid white lines, Sherfield Road, Bramley. Unfortunately, there are still many motorists who seem unaware of the rules surrounding solid white lines. The white lines in Sherfield Road were put there to try and prevent accidents & road rage incidents where motorists insisted on overtaking a line of parked cars when they couldn’t see if anything was travelling up Bramley Lane.

Rule 129 Highway Code: double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10mph or less. Rule 240 Highway Code: you MUST NOT stop or park on a road marked with double white lines, except to pick up or set down passengers. Please, they

are there for the safety of all road users.

Vehicle Crime will continue to be a priority due to an increase, although small at the moment, in the number of incidents and, in theory, the summer months approaching and more people using pub and beauty spot car parks.

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) the statistics for July are: 5 calls relating to the travellers, 4 relating to neighbours, 1 to youths, 4 to vehicles, 1 to noise and 1

other. As always I request that any incidents are reported to 101.

The number of incidents in July for the beat area was 97; made up of 15 ASB incidents and 24 crimes. The number of incidents across the other beat areas ranged from 30 to 68, with Tadley having 124. The number of ASB incidents ranged from 6 to 14, with Tadley having 41. The number of crimes ranged from 4 to 22, including Tadley.

Countrywatch: The area now has a Countrywatch team who will look at poaching, ASB on rural land (misuse of footpaths/ fields, raves) and fly tipping (illegal dumping of waste). Incidents to be reported to 101

Evergreen's Club for the over 60's

Our meeting for the month of July was a demonstration by Jan Painter about the various crafts she had on display. Jan spoke of how she first became interested in crafts, which started with her buying a knitting machine, and from there her interest in different crafts began. The items on display ranged from knitted coats, knitted scarves, teddy bears, various items of beading, embroidery, greeting cards, and boxes made from card which opened up to reveal smaller boxes with photographs inside. Jan gave a very enthusiastic talk and is obviously always learning something new to make. Many of the items she makes for family and friends, and hopefully, she may have inspired us to learn a craft. The meeting ended with tea and a raffle. Our August meeting was a very interesting slide show by Fred Berntsen. Fred took us on a journey to the USA. After landing in Washington DC he then travelled to Atlanta then on to Stone Mountain, which has characters from the civil war engraved into the stone. He also showed us the Park, which was built for the 1994 Olympics. Then we arrived in Nashville, Tennessee and a visit to Graceland, home of Elvis Presley, which is still to this day a shrine for the King. Inside are displayed his golden discs. Outside are the five graves of the family, which are visited everyday by the loyal fans who leave flowers. The last visit was to New Orleans, the home of jazz. Fred also showed slides of the boats, which tourists can go for a ride on the swamps to see the alligators and crocodiles. Next were slides of Southern Ireland, which included Cork, Wexford Harbour and Bantry Bay where the Irish immigrants left from during the potato famine. The last visit was to Austria and the beautiful views of the snow capped glaciers. After the slide show we had tea and a raffle. The next meeting on the 3

Our recent meeting was ‘The Decade You Were Born’. We have a wide range of ages and our oldest member

was born in the 1920s. She described the turmoil which took place in Europe when empires, such as the Austro-Hungarian, were broken up and new countries, such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, were created. It was a decade of the Model T Ford, flappers, Fleming (who discovered penicillin) and votes for women over the age of 21.

The 1930s saw the depression, the building of the Empire State Building in New York, the abdication of Edward VIII and the rise of Hitler’s influence in Germany. Life in the 30s was described with memories of steam trains, buses and bikes as very few owned a car. Life was simple, no television or central heating, but radio and coal fires. People were formal and children were allowed to play outside all day with little supervision.

Obviously the Second World War dominated the 1940s but, partly as a result of war, there were various inventions, the ‘mobile’ phone and transistors for example. Interestingly, three toys were invented: the slinky; silly putty and the frisbee. Others included Tupperware, aerosol cans and the Jeep. American influence and the formation of the NHS were also discussed.

Into the 1950s we heard about the Festival of Britain in 1951, which promoted science, technology, industry, the arts and architecture. Life for women was described. When, having been largely employed during the war years, they were relegated to the home to be housewives or, if they worked, their jobs were often of a menial nature. Life in general had not changed very much since the 1930’s but, gradually ‘mod cons’ made an appearance and people started to buy televisions, which became more widely available, especially for the Queen’s Coronation in 1953. Popular culture was researched for the late 50s and we remembered singers such as Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley, Guy Mitchell and Tommy Steele. Of course, no 1950s list would be complete without mention of Bill Haley and the Comets! Major films from that time included Bridge over the River Kwai, Jailhouse Rock and Vertigo.

That was as far as we got as no members were born in the 60s or 70s. NWR as a national organisation is always looking to gain more members and we welcome all ages. If enough younger women were interested, a new second group could be formed and joint meetings could be arranged. Please contact me on [email protected] for further information.

GOING FOR GOLD

The sun shone down for the weekend of the Sherfield Arts and Flower Festival, held at St. Leonard’s Church

on the 21st and 22nd July. Villagers had been encouraged to display personal accomplishments that for each had been a golden achievement in their particular discipline. The talent on display was truly amazing and a credit to each person who exhibited. There

were paintings, pottery, tapestries, various patchwork quilts, floral kneelers, hand made and dressed dolls, sculptures as well as a beautifully furnished model of Park Corner Cottage and a 56 year old working model boat. Talks were given by Sheena Archer on Park Corner Cottage as it would have been 100 years ago and by Donald Dawson

on the history and building of his boat. There was a children’s story time by Bob Politt and organ recitals by Brian Archer and Mike Abrams.

On the Saturday evening there was a wonderful concert given by EVOC, a wind ensemble originally formed in 1975 by Stewart McCormack from serving members of the Royal Engineers Staff Band at Southwood Camp, Cove (EVOC is Cove spelt backwards). Our thanks are due to the members of EVOC who kindly donated their time and talent to help with the fund raising while at the same time providing us with such a high class musical evening.

The weekend concluded with the raffle draw and a Grand Auction of the flowers and some of the exhibits. Special thanks are due to all who helped in any way to make the weekend such a success, from those on the bring and buy stall, the tea and cake stall, those selling raffle tickets and to each person who helped in any way (unfortunately too many to name here in the space available). However a big thank you to Rody Politt who masterminded the whole project and without whom there would not have been such a festival. Over £2,000 was raised towards the church extension for the toilets and Sunday School room. The total now lies at £173,000 which is well on its way towards the £270,000 estimated overall cost, remembering that we are three years into a five year project. Donald Dawson

Living in a Rubbish Village

I have lived in the lovely village of Sherfield on Loddon for several years and have enjoyed the environment that so many unsung heroes have contributed their time and energy to. We live in a lovely part of Hampshire and our common is used by many of us for sports, play, dog walking, picnics, feeding the ducks as well as just enjoying the surrounding nature. Over the past few weeks I have been shocked at the amount of litter that has appeared around the common and it seems to be getting worse. There have been empty drinks cans left on benches, food wrappers, and I don't just mean the odd misplaced chocolate bar wrapper but frozen food containers, sandwich wrappers, carrier bags, drinks bottles and more. After a very recent cricket match (4

th August) there were left over sandwiches on the floor outside

the cricket pavilion along with empty malteser and wine gum bags, drinks bottles and two carrier bags. There is a litter bin directly outside the pavilion. We can't blame strong winds for distributing the litter after the match. I know little about cricket but I do know that it is played in calm summer weather. This litter was there within minutes of the last of the cricket crowd leaving. This morning my dogs enjoyed their usual stroll around the common. As we came to the duck pond we found someone's complete picnic litter under a bench with a half eaten sandwich left for the next lucky visitor to the bench to enjoy. Again there are several litter bins placed around the pond. If I see litter in our village I pick it up and bin it. I urge you to do the same. Better still, throw away your own litter in the bins provided. As a dog owner I am expected (and rightly so) to clear up after my dog. Why should litter be any

different? We live in a lovely, not a rubbish village. Name and address supplied

There was a really yummy chocolate tart at the Jubilee lunch which Anya begged me to get the recipe for. The lady who made the tart has passed the recipe on and suggested that it went into Loddon Link as I wasn’t the only person asking about it. The recipe is:

Yummy ‘No Bake’ Chocolate Tart (courtesy of Sainsbury’s mag) (serves 6-8)

175g finely crushed digestive biscuits

150g melted unsalted butter

100ml double cream

200g finely chopped dark chocolate

40g shelled and chopped pistachio nuts

Mix the biscuits with 100g of melted butter. Press the mix into the base and up the sides of a 20cm loose bottom cake tin.

Gently warm the cream with the rest of the butter until just below boiling point. Remove from the heat and add the chocolate, stirring until melted.

Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes and then pour into the base. Sprinkle the nuts over it and put it in the fridge for 1-2 hours to set.
