Editorial from Brian ArcherLast month we reached a watershed in the long history of the Loddon Valley Link. As reported by Committee Chairman Dr Donald Dawson, after a long period of heart searching we decided to pass the printing and collation of the magazine to the professionals. We contacted Greenhouse Graphics and they have became our new partners. Our resources had been stretched to the very limit as our readership increased every month, and in order to maintain the high standard of our news and articles, we needed some help. The photograph on the left shows the last printing of the homeproduced Link, with Pip Iles and Peter Gould running our overworked copier at St Leonards Church. Once the printing had been completed (which took two days!) we then had to enlist the aid of a large body of intrepid helpers to sort, collate and staple the printed pages. Pictured on the right are the teams of helpers who, every month sorted the pages into the familiar yellow booklet that became the Church and Parish Magazine.

Songs of Praise on the Village GreenOn the Sunday after the Sherfield Village Fete we held our annual Songs of Praise on the Village Green. Unfortunately it poured with rain on the day, but that did not deter our spirits. Many thanks to the Fete Committee for letting us use the Beer Tent which provided ample cover for the 100 people who gathered to sing and celebrate Pentecost. Our thanks too for the fine accompaniment of the Tadley Concert Brass, who were brilliant. The collection amounted to 177 which has been donated to St Michaels Hospice and the Pelican Trust - who research into Liver Cancer at Basingstoke Hospital. Our thanks too to Pauline & George Rymer for opening their home for coffee and refreshments. Revd Bob Politt

Peggy, Christopher and I would like to thank all of you in the village that have offered us so much support following the loss of our beloved Esme. It has proved to be a great source of strength at this difficult time. The wonderful attendance at the funeral service in St Leonards Church greatly reflected how highly Esme was regarded in the village community and was something we will always remember with great affection. She loved the work she did with the Loddon Valley Link and this will be a testimony to her memory. Garry, Peggy and ChristopherPage 9

Payment Protection Insurance - From the Citizens Advice BureauThere has been an important new High Court ruling about Payment Protection Insurance, or PPI. PPI is insurance you can take out at the same time as you take out a loan or a mortgage, to cover your repayments if you get ill or lose your job. Some people have been sold these policies without being told that it is something separate to the loan they are taking out. This is called mis-selling. Other people have been mis-sold PPI because the policy doesn't cover their circumstances and they would never be able to make a claim on it. For example, they might be self-employed and have been sold a policy which doesn't cover self-employed people. The High Court ruling means that firms selling PPI will have to review past sales of their policies, even where customers have so far not complained. Firms may need to contact all past and present customers to find out if they want to complain. If you think you were mis-sold PPI, you can complain to the firm which sold you the policy. If the firm refuses to deal with your complaint or to give you a refund for the policy, you can make a further complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. You can complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. For more information, go to their website at: www.financial ombudsman.org.uk, or phone them on: 08000 234 567 Page 11

At a time of change and problems throughout the world. Let us pause for reflectionTEXT FOR THE MONTH Matthew 12 : 25 & 30 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. The NIV Bible Prayer for the Month. Lord of all, we pray once more for our troubled and divided world, so full of tension, so full of need. We pray for those who strive to bring liberty, to create a world free from religious and political persecution, from racial bigotry and ethnic cleansing. We pray for those who strive to bring justice, to create a world free from exploitation and corruption, prejudice and discrimination. We pray for those who are striving to break down the barriers between those in power and those who feel helpless and unable to influence events. Lord we ask you to bring peace where there is war, reconciliation where there is division and co-operation where there is conflict. Give to all a willingness to engage in dialogue rather than dispute, in discussion rather than destruction. Come to our broken world and grant it healing. In Jesus name we pray. Amen Prayer Points for July/August: Pray for :

The people of the countries of the Middle East where this year hasseen so much division.

An end to the conflict in Libya, Afghanistan and Syria All the very many Scripture Union and other Christian camps forchildren organised all over the country. May those who attend feel the touch of your Holy Spirit.

Those who are to be married in the next two months, and all whobeen married in the past year.

And Give thanks for the success of all the village events of the lastmonth.

For safe journeys for all who travel in these holiday months, and for a time of rest and renewal for those on holiday.Page 13

Sherfield and District Gardening ClubWe had our best year yet at the fete raising a total of 703.50 for the club. This was made possible by a great deal of hard work from members and nonmembers propagating plants and helping on the day. A huge thanks also to our sponsors, The Shop, Sherdons, The Post Office, Basingstoke Cutting Edge Fabrics, Bramley Bakery and Steve and Bill Dance for the loan of their pickup and trailer. Last but not least, a big thanks to all of you who came and bought plants without which we certainly wouldnt have raised any money! Our summer visits continue in July and August. All members and nonmembers will be warmly welcomed to any of our talks and visits. On Monday 18th July we will be visiting The Buildings at Stockbridge which is open as part of the National Garden Scheme. The Buildings is a renovated farmyard, high on the Hampshire Downs which offers gravel gardens, borders and an exuberant pergola, all on thin chalk soil. Look inwards to the intimate planting of grasses and perennials, outwards to spectacular views in all directions. We will be meeting up at the Sherfield football pavilion car park at 6:15pm. On Monday 15th August we will be visiting Bury Court at Bentley. There are two main gardens at Bury Court. The renowned garden designer Piet Oudolf helped to design the courtyard garden. This garden aims to provide a naturalistic look by using wild looking perennials with an emphasis on grasses. A second garden, designed by the leading minimalist Christopher Bradley-Hole, was added five years ago. This garden is constructed from a grid of paths intersecting large square beds. We will be meeting up at Sherfield football pavillion car park at 6:30 pm For arrangements contact: Linda on 882341 or Vanessa on 881760

The season 2010/11 almost at an end, we can reflect on the events during that period. With nine teams operating and in league action the task of finding pitches was no mean feat. We give our thanks to the Team Managers and their players for the way in which all fixtures were completed. This was not easy due to the inclement weather and wintry conditions during December / January. The Club's Under 11 & Under 12 squads were awarded the Fair Play trophies by the Peter Houseman Youth League. This is indeed an honour as the winners are chosen by the other clubs in their leagues and is judged on the whole season's fixtures. Team Managers Mark Cole and Charlie Butt can be proud of their achievements. The Club's Invitation Tournament held over the weekend of May 14 and 15th was a great success and enjoyed by everyone. The club has received many comments and compliments about the way it was run and the hospitality received by visiting teams. The future of the club relies heavily on the younger element and the training & coaching sessions held on Saturday mornings for Year 'R' & Year T players has attracted some thirty plus youngsters and is enjoyed by all, where fun and enjoyment are the prime factors. Loddon Sports are again hosting a Soccer School operated by staff from Reading F.C. this will take place on Thursday & Friday August 11 and 12th on the Village Green. The coaching sessions will commence at 10am and end at 3pm each day. The fee will be 35.00 for the two days or 20.00 for one day, the age group being catered for is from Years 6 to 14. Parents of children wishing to take part can book on line at www.readingfc.co.uk. I can guarantee that children will enjoy the event and will not be disappointed. Loddon Sports would like to offer thanks to all Team Managers, parents and players who have helped and assisted during the season 2010/11 and we look forward to seeing you all back for the new season 2011/12.

Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish CouncilVillage Fete Once again, this was a successful day hugely enjoyed by all those that attended and ably assisted by the kind weather. At the time of writing, the final figures are still to be calculated but early indications are that a healthy profit in excess of 8,000 has been made which will benefit local organisations. Thanks go to all those who offered their services on the day and in the run-up to the event to ensure that everything went smoothly. A33 Have your Say You will find a survey being undertaken by a local resident in this months edition and the parish council is pleased to support the initiative. Stratfield Turgis was successful in getting a 40mph zone on the A33...but what about further down the A33? Hampshire County Council is undertaking an investigation into resident safety of the A33 between Sherfield Park and Sherfield-on-Loddon village. High tech traffic surveys are planned to identify actual vehicle speeds and volume of traffic. This, however, won't cover pedestrian/cyclist use of this part of the A33 and hence the survey is included in this month's Link. Please complete the survey and drop it into the envelopes at The Shop, The Post Office or St Leonard's Church by 31 July. Alternatively, complete the survey online at: www.surveygizmo.com/s3/485918/A33. Fed up with the A33? Here is your chance to be heard! Hedgerow Harvest The Tree Council is offering free hedging material including fruit trees and soft fruit to community organisations. The Village Green committee will be applying for this on behalf of the parish council to fill in some of the gaps, thus providing some additional protection against unwelcome visitors and giving some added interest at the same time. The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 13 July 2011 at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall all welcome! 400 Years of the KING JAMES BIBLE 1611-2011Four hundred years ago the King James Bible was first published. It had been seven years in preparation since the year 1604 when King James I had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to gather together all the learned scholars to create an authoritative version of the Bible. There were six companies of translators two in London, two in Oxford and two in Cambridge. Perhaps the most amazing thing about the King James Bible is that it does not look or read like the work of a committee. The translation of the Bible from the Latin version (used in churches until the Reformation started in the early 16th century) into English had been started by John Wycliffe in the 15th century and brought to fruition by William Tyndale in 1526. However, the Roman Catholic Church condemned the translators and labelled them as heretics. Tyndale was strangled and burned at the stake in 1527. With the establishment of the Church of England in the 1530s Miles Coverdale produced an updated version of Tyndales translation. Throughout the 16th century more versions were produced, including the Geneva Bible in 1560 and the Bishops Bible in 1568. Different churches used different versions and King James felt that the Church of England, of which he was the head, should have one version used in all the churches. The period was one of great literary productivity. John Donne, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare had all written works which became classics of English Literature, so perhaps it is not surprising the King James Bible should join them in being one of the classic works of our language. From it have come common everyday expressions still in use for example spare the rod and spoil the child from Proverbs or The writing on the wall from Daniel. It has been said that the King James Version had the ability to establish and consolidate norms of written and spoken English; and that the book quite literally changed the English world and created a standard literary language. The Bible was published in a land rich in dialects and for many peoplePage 26

must have seemed at first just another variant. However it was read aloud in every church each Sunday and over the next two hundred years was often the only book owned and read in many homes throughout the land. The Bible was not uniform in its translations of the same Greek or Hebrew word, for example the same Greek word might be translated at different times as rejoice and then glory and then joy. Hence the accuracy of the translation was not perfect but we can regard it as a piece of profound English literature. However, whilst dearly loved by many, it is not a Bible for the 21st century as the meaning of many of the English words in it have changed over the centuries. The most famous example of this is that of the word charity to be found in Pauls first letter to the Corinthians chapter thirteen. The Greek word is agape and is today translated into English as love, not romantic or cloying love but completely self-sacrificing, totally committed love whereas the word charity now means the giving of money. The poetry of the King James Bible remains with us today. Perhaps it is best heard in the Festival of Lessons and Carols from Kings College Cambridge at Christmas and in Handels Messiah. The King James Bible should be revered as a great example of English literature. However, as a Bible translation, it needs to be explained just as some of Shakespeares plays need explanation of the puns and jokes in them. The language has changed and will always change and therefore each generation will need its own translation of the Bible to have a full understanding of the teaching it contains. However, after 400 years of service, and having been such a powerful influence upon our nation, we have good reason to celebrate the achievement of the King James Bible. Dr John Williams

Throughout the year, teams fundraise in their local communities to support the work of Cancer Research UK. Relay events focus on fun for all the family, regardless of age or fitness level everyone is welcome! The fundraising event my team and I are organising is a Charity Race Night at the Basingstoke Rugby Club on Friday 8th July 2011 at 7pm. Tickets cost 10 and include a fish and chip supper. THE WOMENS INSTITUTEReported by Ilene Iles In the absence of our President Dee Bulpitt, the Meeting was taken by our Vice President Christine Skillett. Christine welcomed everyone and asked those present to stand and observe one minutes silence in memory of our late Member, Esme Ward. Jerusalem was then sung unaccompanied. The Minutes of the last Meeting were read and signed, and Val Denny went through the correspondence with us. She asked those going on any of the trips or to any of the events to put their names on the lists that she had prepared. As Evelyn Holdaway was away, the Treasurers Report was given by Margaret Lee and Val gave a few details of the proposed visit to Bletchley Park in the autumn. Christine let those present know that Dee had said that she was willing to organise a walk on the 9th June for those interested and she asked for donations of cakes etc., for our table at the Fete and also for help manning the table. Tess Morris had prepared a Rota. Several other matters were discussed, including details of the format for our July Meeting. The Business Meeting closed at 2.55 p.m. As our Speaker, Mr Robin Radley, was delayed by an accident on the way to the Hall, the raffle was drawn and he arrived shortly after. He had actually visited us before in September 2007 and had given a very inspiring talk about his work to establish a Childrens Home for destitute children and orphans in Kerala State in India. The Home now holds 70 children; they opened with five children (one boy and four girls) in 1996 and one of the five, a girl who is now twenty is getting married. Of the other four, two have gone into administration and two into nursing and they will now be able to keep their families thanks to the education they received whilst at the home. Mr Radley recounted several harrowing tales about the abject poverty in the State although it is a tourist area. There is no work and in utter desperation parents are committing suicide or threatening to and there are always lots of children at the gates but they just cannot help them all. Tess Morris gave the vote of thanks to a truly inspirational person and a collection was taken for CHIKS. A delicious tea followed. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 6th JULY 2011 AT 2 P.M. SUMMER PARTYPage 33

Report by Gill Fearon

Our May meeting was our annual ramble, a walk of over three miles from the village of Greywell, near Odiham. We climbed Greywell Hill northwards out of the village and walked through Butter Wood, a lovely deciduous woodland which gave us protection from the odd spots of rain. Im sure there must have been plenty of wildlife around, but it would have certainly made itself scarce due to our noisy chatter! Having completed a circuit of the wood, we descended a fairly steep track to the north-west side of the Greywell Tunnel and the Basingstoke Canal, which was hardly visible because of all the weeds. This is because the tunnel is protected owing to its large bat colony, therefore it is no longer navigable. However, it was interesting to imagine what it would have once looked like. We then rejoined the path down Greywell Hill and made for the pub. The Fox and Goose is obviously popular. It was very friendly and we were given a warm welcome by the hosts and regulars. The food was excellent value for money and some of us could not finish! Certainly somewhere to return! On fete day, we ran our usual gift stall and managed to make just over 86 for the charities. Thanks to all who supported us. Our June meeting was our annual safari supper, which at the time of writing, is yet to happen. This involves us all starting at the same house for pre-drinks, being careful not to get too carried away so that we are able to concentrate on where we are going for our starter, main course and dessert. We then all meet up for coffee at the end. Always a popular evening! In July we have another favourite, a hat evening, where we put topics for discussion into a hat, then take out some at random. In August we will be discussing fair-trade how it works and how effective it is.

I now have a blackberry phone. Please can you use this number in future. It is still 999 for an emergency and 0845 045 45 45 to report incidents Thank you Mandy Jewell

Keep your Property Safe

In recent weeks there has been a burglary in Bramley where entry was gained via the cat flap; keys had been left in the lock, offenders retrieved the keys and subsequently gained access to the house; car keys and then the car was stolen. Please can I remind people to be vigilant. Do not leave keys in locks, do not leave car keys on view, do not leave garage doors and integral doors insecure. Thank you. Mandy

PARKING NEAR RAILWAY STATIONSOne of the noticeable changes in travel patterns in recent years has been the growth of rail travel as opposed to the use of private motor vehicles. Evidence of this is to be found in the side streets around railway stations where motor cars are parked whilst their owners make their main journey by rail. The consequences of this for local residents are congestion of the streets and, in some cases, obstruction. Most recently there has been a noticeable increase in the incidents of criminal damage to vehicles parked near to railway stations. It is clearly unacceptable for this to happen. We are asking that everyone keep their eyes open for any such activity and report it. Police recognise the issue of residents vehicles being blocked in or out through inconsiderate parking by others; if reported, where appropriate and practicable, will seek to improve the situation. Please help us by reporting any suspicious behaviour around parked vehicles. Thank you WPC Mandy Jewell & PCSO Fermor-DunmanPage 37

KEEP SAFE AND WARMThe Safe Warm and Secure pilot project has been established by the Wellbeing and Partnerships Team in Hampshire County Council, Age Concern Hampshire and the Shaw Trust to help people over 70 to keep safe, warm and secure.
