Location: India Project: Indian Warli Painting

Introduction and Narrative Day (part 1) Student Teacher: Ally Schlumpf Grade Level: 5th & 6th and 7th & 8th Grade Date Taught: October 12, 2010 Aim/Goal of the 9-wk Curriculum: Throughout this nine-week period, this curriculum will encourage students to learn about art practices from other parts around the globe. In learning about these different artistic traditions and methods students will learn about different communities and how their art reflects their culture. Students will then be asked to reflect and create their own meaningful artwork that is relevant to their own life based on their acquired knowledge. Through activities such as classroom discussions, idea sharing, art-making, and critiques students will be able to learn about how to embrace the differences and similarities they share with their peers, as well as all individuals with diverse backgrounds. The curriculum will include various media investigations in both two and three dimensions and will not only create new knowledge of different media, but also build upon studentʼs previous knowledge.

Fine Arts Goals Met by the Objectives:

• 25.A.2. Identify the positive and negative space in an art work. • 25.A.7. Recognize the relationship of parts to the whole in an art work. • 25.A.9. Identify symbols from everyday life in given art work. • 25.A.6. Identify in an art work elements (e.g. jagged lines, curved shapes, bright colors)

that convey emotions (e.g. scary, mad). • 25.B.2. Examine the same sensory elements, organizational principles, and expressive

qualities in two different works in the same art form.

Objectives Students will:

• Create a work of art based on their own narrative by brainstorming with some of their most valued memories or life experiences.

• Create a work of art using chalk (or oil pastel) on paper using techniques like blending, gradient, and smudging.

• Create a work of art that visually depicts their narrative by learning how the Warli tribe used abstract art to tell stories from daily life.

• Learn how to use pattern and repetition to help recreate a real sensory experience in a two-dimensional space by looking at examples of Warli paintings and how they successfully used those techniques in their work.

Vocabulary

• Culture: the arts, traditions and customs, attitudes and behaviors of a specific social group

• Tradition: ideas or beliefs that have been passed down and followed for many generations by a country, culture, or family

• Blending: to mix or intermingle smoothly and inseparably • Gradient: a smooth blending of shades from light to dark or from one color to another. • Smudging: to smear or blur • Narrative: a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious. • Warli: a tribal group of India; located in the Ghat Range in Maharashtra, India • Abstract: of or pertaining to the formal aspect of art, emphasizing lines, colors,

generalized or geometrical forms, etc. especially with reference to their relationship to one another.

• Pattern: a decorative design • Repetition: repeating forms so as to create a pattern in a work of art

Procedures

Introduction (2 minutes)

• Slide 1: o Warli tribal paintings come from the Indian state of Maharashtra in

Western India • How many people have learned about India before? What kinds

of facts have you heard about India?

Discussion (8 minutes)

• Slide 2: o One large characteristic of Warli paintings is that the only color paint that

is used is the color white. The colors in the paintings come out in the canvas that they are painted on.

o On the original paintings, the white coloring is created by grinding rice into a white powder.

• Slide 3: o Long ago, these paintings were mainly created on mud walls inside of the

tribal houses. o It was the responsibility of the women of the tribe to create these wall

paintings. o And unlike the drawings that we created as a part of our Chinese

creation, these paintings do not depict mythological creatures, but the social life of the tribe.

• Slide 4: o So instead of depicting gods or other deities, these paintings were used

to show scenes of daily life within that particular tribe by using loose rhythmic patterns.

• Slide 5: o The tribe originally credited with the creation of this art form are known

as the Warlis located in the Ghat Range in Maharashtra, India. That is where we get the name of the style of painting as the Warli paintings.

o Today this art work is revered as a folk art with great value in India. • Slide 6:

o Have students brainstorm an event in their life that they did something great. An achievement they are very proud of.

• It could be an award they won, when a baby sibling was born, a great day that they had, etc.

Demonstration (5 minutes)

• Teacher has students move to the demonstration table in the back of the room. o Teacher demonstrates how to use chalk (or oil pastel) on colored

construction paper. Show how you can smudge the material to show gradients Shows how different patters can evoke different emotions/attitudes

o Teacher tells students that their drawing is to represent their proud moment Teacher shows students the example and explains what each part

represents. Studio Time (27 minutes)

• Teacher should first instruct students to place their names on the backs of their work before starting with the chalk.

• Students will be allowed to take a piece of construction paper (the color of their choice) and a piece of chalk (or oil pastel) back to their desk to begin working.

• Students will be instructed to depict their narrative through use of visual imagery and rhythmic patterns to help display their narrative in their artwork.

Cleanup (8 minutes)

• When it comes time to clean up students will be instructed to return their chalk (or oil pastel) to the back table and create a pile for their pieces so that the teacher can keep them until the next week.

• Should there be any chalk dust teacher will instruct students to use a wet paper towel to wipe down their desks before continuing with their next lesson.

Closure (2 minutes) • Teacher will end with a re-cap of the information that they learned about that day

including: o The country of study o The name of the tribe we studied o The name of the work the students are producing o What the art was used for

Backup Activity

• If students finish early they may continue with their myth/legend if they had not finished writing them.

o If students finish early, instruct them to continue to write a story/legend that includes their mythical creature from the previous project.
