The Winter Gardens: Research TalkSat 21 May10.30am - 12noonDundas House,Dundas Street, TS1 1HY

Middlesbrough Winter Gardens were established by Lady Florence Bell, an author, playwright, social investigator and wife of steel magnate Sir Hugh Bell, who was Chairman of Bell Brothers ironworks and three-times Mayor of Middlesbrough.

The Winter Garden provided a place of comfort and leisure for the men, women and children of the area. During the Winter Garden’s first season 146,122 people passed through the turnstiles with entry costing a penny. The Winter Garden provided a place of comfort and recreation for the town’s people and visitors to the area.

As part of Navigator North’s ongoing work and research into the Middlesbrough Winter Gardens, we have commissioned a researcher to further explore themes and ideas around the site. This talk will be a presentation of findings and connections between the history of the site and issues that are still relevant to Middlesbrough and wider society today.

Everyone welcome.

Players with Strange-Shaped Balls -The Story of Rugbyon TeessideWed 25 May7 - 8pmTeesside Archives, Exchange House, TS1 1DB

Football with a spherical ball was not the most popular ball game played in Teesside in the nineteenth century. That honour belonged to rugby.

Local historian Martin Peagam will explore the story of the origins of rugby on Teesside, how rugby players were responsible for the birth of The Boro, and why rugby lost out to football.

Along the way he will explain why cricket led to rugby, why rugby lost out to football, why a letter to the local paper led to a rugby club being founded, why a touring team arrived with a hangover, why some jockeys were upset with some rugby players, and why one club has a sprinkling of Hollywood glitter.

“I put the Iron in Ironopolis”: Middlesbrough’s Industrial Identity, c.1881-1931Thurs 26 May11amTeesside Archives Exchange House,Exchange Square, TS1 1DB

Historian Ben Roberts’ talk examines the manner in which Middlesbrough’s iron industry and in particular the smoke it produced became central to local identity and the construction of community spirit in Middlesbrough. It explores the Middlesbrough 50th anniversary jubilee of 1881 and centenary of 1931 as showcases and celebrations of local identity with industry at their hearts. Both events came at times of economic uncertainty - an iron trade deficit in the 1880s and the global depression of the 1920s/30s. While the jubilee was an occasion designed to promote financial recovery, the centenary came at a time of deindustrialisation when local industry was tarnished. Yet the centenary showed that in terms of local identity, industry was still absolutely central and although views of industrial smoke were increasingly negative, connection to industry was firmly entrenched in the hearts and minds of local people.

Due to its popularity, Pacific Predators has been extended for a second year, giving visitors another chance to glimpse the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean and learn more about the predators lurking there.

The exhibition illustrates the world of the tiger shark, sperm whale and colossal squid, hidden beneath the waves, as well as their relationship with humans both today and in Captain Cook’s time.

At the time that Cook was making his voyages, so little was known about these awe-inspiring predators that they were both feared and respected, and in some cultures even revered as gods or the spirits of ancestors.

The Cleveland Art Society begin their 2016 exhibition programme at The Heritage Gallery with a long awaited themed show of work which concentrates on the characteristics of our North East buildings, with emphasis on those found in and around Teesside. Buildings other than our familiar industrial structures are looked at, and the relationship we have with those we work in, visit for leisure and live in is explored in this fascinating exhibition by some of our region’s most talented visual artists.
