How about a round of applause for one- to three-person laboratory owners? With almost another decade to go before many of these operators feel “the calling” to

retire, they are still very much engaged in the here and now and are clearly living the well-disciplined, well-balanced life. Bravo.

The results of LMT’s compre-hensive Small Lab Survey give us the opportunity to celebrate some of the reasons you are all so deeply engaged in this field in the first place, highest among them: a shared passion for replicating natural dentition.

When the first huge batch of completed surveys came through—both online and via the mail—the editorial department eagerly dove right in to get an early read on how you are faring and what you are thinking. We believe this report will help dispel any misconceptions about very small and/or home-based laboratories as a group.

On page 16 you will see how perception is one’s reality and that’s what makes the world go ’round. See, for example, how one laboratory owner feels that “art-istry is no longer valued,” while another notes, “the demand for my artwork is high . . .”

Our pairing of this survey with the latest CAD/CAM product and technology news is no coincidence. While everyone understands that most laboratory owners came into this field for the love of the craft, we also recognize that the tools and equipment used to create restora-tions have changed so dramatically that it’s become hard for some to still call it “craftsmanship.”

To that end, Dan O’Rourke, owner of O’Rourke Dental Studio, a small, high-end laboratory in Bristol, NH, recently suggested a Man versus Machine challenge on The BRIDGE. Bridgsters enjoyed

a rapid-fire discussion about CAD/CAM restorations versus those made by a pair of human hands. To date, it’s the longest conversation thread on the site. (To join the discussion or simply enjoy the lively read, go to LMTmag.com/danorourke!)

Between The BRIDGE and this Small Lab Sur-vey, it’s clear that those who are fully engaged in this industry are engaged because they are doing what they really love, whether it’s working at the bench, on a com-puter, on a phone, at a location outside or inside their homes. As a small lab owner, each of you is honoring your preferences, find-ing balance, beholden to none and thriving.

How cool is that!

P.S. Your participation in sur-veys such as this one is priceless; it helps us help you keep your finger on the pulse of your com-munity. It enables us to point out strategic directions that may help align you with the best plan for your market niche. Thanks for con-sistently working with us so that our reports back to you can be so comprehensive.

By the way, though we don’t like to bombard you with too many survey requests in one period of time, please excuse the bombard-ment this one time as we gear up for our biennial Wage and Fee Reports. By now, you’ve hopefully completed and returned our Wage Survey—our report is scheduled for our September issue. The Fee Survey will arrive shortly and we are, again, hoping you will come through with your valued and much appreciated participation.

Dear LMT:

I’d like to comment on the April and May Letters to the Editor regarding material usage and disclosure documentation for restorations being produced by offshore laboratories and specifi-cally those in China.

As the general manager of Pro-Lab Solutions, Inc., which out-

sources work to China, I am very supportive of full disclosure as it relates to offshore restorations and would like to provide a counter viewpoint to those who have con-cerns about the materials being used in China:

• Major—but not all—out-sourcing labs in China are FDA registered and use only FDA-approved or CE-marked materials.

• These FDA-compliant labs provide full disclosure of the materials and lot numbers used in each case by including a document that indicates material composi-tion and Identalloy and Identce-ram stickers when they’re avail-able for the product. In addition to the specific case documentation, some of these laboratories provide customers with monthly material lists of all its FDA-approved or CE-marked products with lot numbers. This further ensures traceability, proper documentation and satisfies DAMAS and ISO requirements.

• Within the last year, the FDA has started taking a much more proactive role in monitoring imports and conducting audits of Chinese laboratories to ensure compliance with its regulations. This is an ongoing process and ultimately, Chinese labs that do not meet the overall FDA stan-dards and guidelines will not have their cases cleared by U.S. Customs as they enter the U.S.

Due to the lack of new techni-cians entering the dental labora-tory profession, the number of U.S. technicians is now approxi-mately 37,600, down from 47,000 a decade ago, according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. It’s inevitable that U.S. labs need to incorporate some type of outsourc-ing model (either to other U.S. labs or outside the country) as well as CAD/CAM into their businesses to ensure competitiveness and meet demand for their services.

Materials are a relatively small part of the total cost of a crown produced in China and there-fore a small contributor to the final price to the lab or dentist. The key factor driving Chinese costs and their eventual selling prices is labor.

In an effort to stimulate the economy, the Chinese govern-ment is requiring employers to increase wages 5% each year for

the next five years. This means the cost advantage for U.S. labs to send work to China may decrease. However, as a reaction to the ris-ing labor costs, Chinese labs will be embracing CAD/CAM technology to offset costs. This trend will increase even more once digital impressions become more commonplace because it’s so cost-effective to send .stl files electronically. At that point, out-sourcing may once again become more advantageous for U.S. labs from a cost perspective.

Outsourcing is a business model and the decision to incorporate it into a laboratory’s operations is a business decision based upon the lab’s needs and prevailing global manufacturing dynamics. We live in a global marketplace. When we sneeze, Europe gets a cold. The business climates are interdependent and require us to think differently to survive the storm until the weather changes. My point is that all laboratories should know and understand the facts and potential benefits and then make a choice as to whether outsourcing is right for them.

2010

After four years, 17 amend-ments, countless committee debates, and initial resistance from the state dental association and board of dentistry, bill SF288—

requiring dental laboratories to register and disclose material content and country of origin—was signed into law by Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton in May.

Effective January 1, 2013, all laboratories in Minnesota must register with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry; the initial registration fee is $50 for the first two years and $25 for every subsequent two years.

In addition, the law requires all

laboratories in the state to provide the following information to the dentist to be stored in the patient’s record (Minnesota dentists using an out-of-state lab must obtain the same information from that lab):

1. Material content of the resto-ration and confirmation that FDA-compliant materials were used.

2. The country of origin where the restoration—in whole or in part—was fabricated, including the laboratory name and address.

Since material content and country of origin will be a perma-nent part of the patient’s record, the dentist is required to share the information if the patient asks. The law does not include a few provi-sions that were part of the origi-nal bill: the requirement for every technician to have eight hours of continuing education every two years and for every labora-tory to have a CDT on staff or be DAMAS- or ISO-certified.

“I think the law is going to be very good for our profession,” says Gary Iocco, President of the Midwest Dental Labora-tory Association (MDLA), who worked tirelessly for its passing. “We don’t want to put any labo-ratories out of business or even dictate that lab work can’t go off-shore, but we want a level playing field. It’s all about transparency and safety.”

Roland DG Celebrates 30th Anniversary with week-Long Event in Japan Although Roland DG, manu-facturer of the DWX-50 Milling Machine, is a new player in the dental industry, the company has just celebrated 30 years of developing and manufacturing innovative and precise 2D and 3D output devices. The compa-ny’s technology—which finds its roots in the music industry since founder Ikutaro Kakehashi devel-oped its very first output device for music synthesizers—now has applications ranging from medi-cal device manufacturing to digi-tal printing, custom apparel, per-sonalization, jewelry wax model making, and both product and package prototyping.

To celebrate its 30th anniver-sary, Roland held a week-long event for employees, customers and colleagues at its headquarters in Hamamatsu, Japan. The agenda included a tour of the Roland D-Shop Digital Yatai state-of-the-art production facility, which

follows a cell-based production model in which each product is assembled by a single employee aided by detailed computerized instruction. This process has won numerous awards for its precise quality control measures.

During the event, the company also announced the grand prize winner of its first-ever interna-tional contest, which invited customers to enter their most creative projects produced with Roland technology. The winner was an elaborate scale model of a tunneling machine produced on a Roland MDX-540 bench-top 3D milling machine. To see the more than 1,100 entries—including a few from the dental industry—from across 16 interna-tional regions, visit www.rolandcreativeawards.com.

Guests were also treated to two city tours—traveling by bullet train at more than 200mph to Kyoto and Tokyo—and other activi-

ties including an organ concert at Roland’s Hamana Lake music facility, a presentation from Japa-nese calligrapher Maayo Sho, and a performance by percussionists

from world-renowned KOH. For more information on

Roland products, including the DWX-50 dental mill, visit www.rolanddga.com.

For the Roland Creative Awards Competition, Sumner Dental Lab, Clarks Summit, PA, submitted photos of two bridges milled on the Roland DWX-50 mill: one substruc-ture milled in zirconia and another (shown here) milled in wax and cast in metal.

The Roland Creative Center gallery is located in the lobby of the company’s Irvine, CA headquarters. The gallery displays the work of hundreds of Roland customers, showcasing the many applications of its technology.

214 LAB MAnAgEMEnT TODAy

For years, we’ve been hear-ing about the decline in the number of small labs and yet, to date, LMT’s

circulation data shows little attri-tion; the percentage of one- to three-person laboratories has remained relatively consistent dur-ing our 28-year history. However, more than 60% of the respondents to LMT’s Small Lab Survey are over 55 years old. While a number of them comment they will “die at the bench,” more than half plan to retire within the next 10 years; in other words, there will be a sub-stantial shift in demographics in the near future. (For survey demo-graphics, see page 16.)

When you ask small laboratory operators about the future of their own businesses, 66% are enthusi-astic, calling it “good” or “great.” But when it comes to the fate of small laboratories as a whole, it’s another story: only 34% believe the outlook for their market seg-ment is “good” or “great. Another 44% say they are uncertain about

the long-term prospects for the small laboratory.

That uncertainty isn’t surpris-ing given the economic situa-tion of the past few years and the growth of offshore outsourcing. Both have taken their toll, leaving many feeling the pinch of price erosion. Some respondents noted that price cutting among labora-tories and pricing pressure from dentist-clients are at an all-time high, constricting the fees they can charge and their ability to maintain a viable profit margin.

Many small laboratories have a small but long-established cli-ent base; on average, they service nine clients on a regular basis. Although happy for the customer loyalty, they’re facing the added pressure of having an aging base of clients, many of whom are also nearing retirement age.

While all size laboratories face these market conditions to some extent, they leave the smaller operations particularly vulnerable.

Going Digital: Do or Don’tAnother enormous challenge for small laboratories is competing in the increasingly digital world. Some owners feel the technology is too expensive or they’re too old to get involved and predict the small laboratory will go the “way of the dinosaur,” squeezed out of business by larger laboratories that can more easily afford the capital investment and have larger market-ing budgets. Others have made a conscious decision to not go digi-tal, saying the restorations don’t measure up to hand-crafted work.

Survey participants who have incorporated digital technology either via outsourcing or by pur-chasing equipment—14% have a scanner, 6% have a milling unit—are among the most optimistic about their future. They credit CAD/CAM and rapid prototyping technology with improving their efficiency, sav-ing time, enabling them to meet cli-ent demand for zirconia restorations and boosting their profit margins. For many, it has also reinvigorated

their interest in their work.“I was starting to think about

retirement but now I don’t want to anymore. The digital world is a wonderful place—I’m loving it! We’re set and ready for the changes in our industry,” says Doug Horton, CDT, President, Precision Dental Arts, Inc., Tigard, OR. He pur-chased a scanner and milling unit six years ago after analyzing his outsourcing costs and realizing it was financially advantageous to buy equipment rather than continue to send the work to another lab. Today, 85% of his work is fabri-cated using digital technology.

Also upbeat are the removable laboratory owners who are feeling good about their specialty, thank-ful their services and talents are in demand. “The denture field has a bright future since it’s hard to out-source to another state, let alone to another country, due to the number of visits needed before the final product is delivered; plus, there are fewer skilled denture technicians,” says the owner of a removable laboratory in the Pacific region.

Strategies to CompeteEstablishing a level of trust and building strong relationships based on teamwork and mutual respect are what many small laboratory owners feel give them an advan-tage over their larger competitors and offshore laboratories. With 80% of our respondents’ clients within a 50-mile radius of their laboratories, they’re making the most of their proximity and touting “local” as their strength.

Many say this personalized service is key to their success. By focusing on one-on-one contact, chairside assistance, after-hours availability, being a resource to their clients and offering a con-sistent, quality product, they’re holding their own in the rapidly changing marketplace.

Those small lab owners who have carved out a technical niche—whether it be boutique-level quality,

The Future of the Small Laboratory:Grim or Great?

Small laboratories—those with one to three people—are the backbone of our industry, rep-resenting more than 50% of the u.S. market. LMT’s Small Lab Survey offers an overview of who they are, how they work and their outlook for the future of their own businesses as well as their market segment as a whole.

orthodontia or highly esthetic ante-rior crowns—also feel they have a leg up on their larger competitors who may offer more comprehen-sive services. “A wise man told me years ago that if you’re the best at what you do, you will always have work,” says William Fenell, Owner, Shore Center Dental Lab, a remov-able lab in South Euclid, OH.

By focusing on these strengths, the more optimistic respondents say there will always be a need for the services of a small laboratory

and therefore the entrepreneurial spirit is still alive and well in this segment of the market. “The future looks bright since there are always options that allow us to grow and expand. Each year I set particu-lar objectives and if I accomplish them, great; if not, I reevaluate and make adjustments,” says Vernice Griffin, CDT, CEO and Owner, Griffin Dental Laboratories, Lou-isville, KY. “You’re only limited by your imagination and the goals you set for yourself.”

Only 7% of our survey respondents are full service compared to 25% of all sizes of labs. It’s no surprise that the majority of small labs outsource at least some of their work to augment their services. Almost 40% say their prices are higher than other labs in their area. (LMT will report on fees charged by small labs vs. their larger counterparts in our Fee Survey in the October issue.)

The Future Looks...…Grim

Outsourcing to China is taking market share. CAD/CAM technol-ogy and implant companies are taking profits away from labs. Digital dentistry will eventually kill much of the posterior work. Chairside milling machines will continue to take more work away from labs. Rising costs of materi-als and equipment, expensive tech-nology and sky-rocketing precious metals are all killing profits.

Bleak; my volume is 50% down so far this year.

It’s getting harder and harder to compete with the large labora-tories because dentists are shop-ping for “cheap” more than I have ever seen in 42 years.

Digital technology is going to price the small lab out of business. The machinery needed to keep up is too expensive and outsourcing costs make your profit margin too low to survive.

In recent weeks, I’ve learned about two different CAD compa-nies telling my doctors they will soon be able to bypass “those expensive technicians” and just deal directly with their companies. Many CAD/CAM companies don’t seem to be a good match for small labs because of the high costs and learning curve. Large laboratories have a huge advantage here.

Not doing very well; may be forced to retire.

Not too good! Artistry is no longer valued!

It seems that larger laborato-ries are surviving while small labs are price cutting and having dif-ficulty maintaining a decent profit margin.

Offshore labs are destroying our business. In my opinion, these labs should be taxed to compete with the local labs. I can’t afford scanners and expensive equipment. I’m sure most other small labora-tories would agree we’re going to end up with very few large labs and the small to medium labs will be gone—yes, even the high-quality ones. Because entry-level wages are so low, I don’t think young men and women will be interested in this field in the future.

Competition in NY is fierce; it’s 95% price driven. When I go into a new dental office to intro-duce myself, the first question the doctor asks is, “How much?”

Small labs will go the way of the dinosaur. Increased regula-tions/compliance costs coupled with cheap offshore work that flows into this country unregulated will choke them out.

Dentistry is getting more expensive. The supplies are costing more. Labs cannot increase their fees, yet the doctors are charging more to the patients and complain about lab fees.

...Great My business has stayed strong

through this terrible economy. If I made it through this, I can make it through anything. My cosmetic workload dropped off a bit during the past couple of years, but has really picked back up as of late.

My future looks incredibly solid. As the masses move toward CAD technology, I move in the completely opposite direction. I educate my clients on the short-comings of this new technology and they’re grateful for the insight. I work with dentists who appreci-ate what I can do for them, they trust my expertise and we love working as a team.

The outlook is great. My phi-losophy has always been keep doing what I am doing. There is a huge demand for removable tech-nicians due to the demand for den-tures, partials, etc.

I currently have a full workload most of the time; occasionally, a little more than I would prefer.

I have been working with my clients for an average of 20 years and we have a good working rela-tionship. I was feeling some pres-sure to invest in a CAD/CAM system but for the amount of requests I’m getting for those types of restorations, outsourcing is working well for me.

I only fabricate dentures. The clients love my work. I see a solid future and possible growth.

The demand for my artwork is high and I have been approached to lecture and produce instruc-tional DVDs to be marketed to schools and private practices.

There will be more work as more technicians are retiring.

Great. I get clients on referrals and I’ve been doing well. I don’t want to get too busy so things are perfect for me right now.

The digital laboratory’s future is going to be a successful one. We’ve been scanning for almost five years and we’re installing a Roland 5-axis milling machine. Our next step in the digital market will be to incorporate digital print-ing for models and possibly install a second design station. We’ve taken these last slower years and invested time and money in tech-nology to be prepared for the future. We’re poised for growth.

Although I’m “old school” and retiring soon, I think the future for dental technology is bright, marvel-ous and amazing. Our industry will remain interesting and challenging.

I’m busier than I’ve ever been. I have young doctors and their practices are growing, thus I’m swamped.

My business has grown tre-mendously in the past three years, and I don’t see a slowdown soon. I am considering hiring more technicians.

Perk of Working from Home:Enhanced Quality of Life

“Very satisfied” is how three-quarters of home-based lab owners feel about

their decision to work from home, according to LMT’s Small Lab Survey. The financial ben-efits include lower overhead, no commuting costs and tax advan-tages. But more importantly for many respondents is the enhanced quality of life: more family time, flexible hours, more relaxed atmo-sphere and the ability to balance work/home demands more easily.

“I have been a working mother who was always home when my kids were home. We have a close-knit family and I think working at home has allowed me to have a career and a family and balance them—something that is difficult for many women to do. It’s really nice to be able to start the burn-out and do a casting as soon as I get up, or run downstairs to press something in the evening to get started on my work for the next day. I also get to start dinner for my family and get my work done at the same time,” says Susan Krivichi, Dental Harmony, Ltd., Menomonee Falls, WI.

In fact, 58% of our respondents who now operate their labs from home were previously located outside the house. In addition to the convenience and economics, many moved home to downsize

and focus on what they love best—working at the bench—rather than managing employees.

One of the misconceptions about home-based labs is that the owners never stop working. On the contrary, nearly half of these home-based lab owners say they work fewer hours because their lab is located in the house. In fact, they work about six hours less per week than their non-home-based counterparts; 74% of our home-based respondents prefer to main-tain a flexible schedule rather than work set hours.

Work/Home SeparationThe key to separating work from home life is discipline, learning to multi-task effectively and keeping the workload in check. “I keep my head down and do what needs to be done when it suits me. I look at it like I am living with a conveyer belt (time) that never stops. I can step up to the belt and process the work any time of day or night that

I choose but the work must ship on the day I originally designated—no exceptions and no excuses. It works for me. I am pretty much able to come and go as I wish,” says Rudy Ziegler, Ziegler Dental Laboratory, Oakland, OR.

Another fallacy is that home-based laboratories aren’t quality oriented or embracing the latest technology. In fact, 13% of our respondents have a CAD scanner and 5% have a milling unit. “We’re in our fifth year of scanning and digitizing our lab. We’re custom-coloring presintered substructures

and modifying full contour crowns in the occlusal areas to enhance the natural look of the anatomy. We will install our Roland 5-axis mill-ing machine next month so we’ll have full control and ability to mill our own zirconia, PMMA and wax frameworks. It will take us to the next level of technology,” says Tim Tyndall, CDT, Owner, Creative Expressions, Winterville, NC.

Almost all—95%—of our respondents say their clients know the lab is located in their home “Our dentists have visited our lab. They have confidence in us and know we produce good work, regardless of the location. In other words, a com-mercial location really has nothing to do with the quality of the work being done,” says the owner of a C&B lab in California.

On the following pages, LMT profiles 10 home-based laborato-ries whose owners are proud of their businesses and eager to show off their facilities.

One of the misconceptions about home-based labs is that the owners never stop working. On the contrary, nearly half of these home-based lab owners work fewer hours because their lab is located in their house.

Sixty-one percent of one- to three-person labs are home-based. Of that percentage, 77% of the labs are actually in the home; the rest are in a separate building on the owner’s home property.

A Look Inside Ten Home-Based Laboratories

A small lab owner is required to wear many hats and, here, Eric Redd illustrates that point—lit-erally. For his laboratory Christ-mas card, a photographer friend worked magic to show three Redds juggling three tasks at once in his C&B lab. “My clients loved it! One of them even said ‘I didn’t know you hired other technicians’,” says

Redd with a laugh. “I guess she needed to take a second look!”

Owner of Summerville, South Carolina’s Bedrock Ceramic Stu-dio—named after the cartoon Flintstones’ prehistoric town—Redd says the best parts of work-ing at home are the freedom, flex-ibility and commute. “You can’t beat my walk to work!” he says.

Technician Turned Do-it-yourself MarketerMiriam Olsen, Dental Esthetics, Okemos, Mi Age: 48years in industry: 21Lab opened: 1991

“when it comes to having a home-based lab, I’ve heard others say ‘you never get away from your work,’ but this has never bothered me. I’ve always looked at it as an advantage. When you love what you do, you don’t need to get away from it,” says Miriam Olsen, who has owned Dental Esthetics in Okemos, MI for over 20 years.

Olsen prides herself on her cus-tomer service efforts—like being available to her clients via phone during evenings and weekends—and fabricating cosmetic cases, and she’s promoting these strengths via two new marketing vehicles she recently created: a video and website.

Using her Mac and iMovie software, she made a four-minute video that highlights her services with pictures of her work, music and even voiceover from Olsen herself. She sent DVDs to poten-tial clients in the mail and then followed up with in-office visits, bringing goodies like cashews or chocolate-covered raisins. Wanting an online presence, this do-it-yourself marketer also used software at 1and1.com to create her own website, michi-ganlabtech.com, that includes her professional background, Rx slips, contact information and a photo gallery.

A lover of technology and learning new things, Miriam Olsen tackled the creation of her own marketing video and website.

The average home-based laboratory is 490 square feet. It services 7.5 clients, 77% of whom are located within a 50-mile radius.

Talk about a view. Westwind Dental Designs, owned by Mary Waldron, BS, MA, is located on Waldron’s 90-acre property—a former dairy farm—and is sur-rounded by grassy fields, ponds and wildlife such as geese, deer and even an occasional eagle.

The lab is located 100 yards from Waldron’s home in a 2,400-sq-ft barn custom-built by Wal-dron’s husband. The lab occupies about one-third of the barn; the rest of the building houses Wal-dron’s pottery studio and her husband’s equipment for his log-cutting hobby. The view inside isn’t too shabby either: the barn features tall ceilings, pine beams, decorative tile and creature comforts like radiant floor heating.

But the lab’s rural location doesn’t mean it isn’t a high-tech operation. Waldron—who opened the sole proprietorship in January 2011—uses a Dental Wings scan-ner to design her cases and out-sources the milling. “Right off the bat, I knew I wanted a scanner in my lab,” says Waldron, a former dental technology instructor who researched various systems by net-working with other lab owners and going to trade shows. “My scan-ner allows me to put in my desired parameters, is very accurate and cuts my labor in half.”

With a firm handle on digital technology, Waldron’s biggest challenge is marketing. When

she first opened the business, she spent about 50% of her time going door to door, producing marketing literature, sending postcards and even creating her own website. “Besides investing in a scanner, marketing has been my second biggest expense,” she says. Luckily, her efforts are pay-ing off: she now has six regular clients and is looking to add just two more.

Westwind Dental Designs is located inside this building on Owner Mary Waldron’s 90-acre property in Big Rapids, MI. The building was custom built by Waldron’s husband and also houses Waldron’s pottery studio and her husband’s log-cutting equipment.

Industry veteran Mary Waldron has embraced technology in her home-based operation, scanning and designing cases on the Dental Wings Scanner. One advantage? “It cuts my labor in half,” she says.

It’s a family affair at Sage Dental Arts. Owner CJ Bigsby gets help from his wife who handles billing and his eight children. His two oldest sons pour models, his 12-year-old helps with shipping, and his five- and seven-year-olds assemble crown boxes.

home-Based Owner has Built-in ‘Staff’CJ Bigsby, Sage Dental Arts, young, AZAge: 39years in industry: 13Lab opened: 2009

when CJ Bigsby decided to leave his job as a technician and open a laboratory in his home in 2009, it was mostly because of time. “In my experience, many labs are more concerned about volume than esthetics. I was tired of high-pro-duction environments and wanted to have ample time to spend on each crown,” says Bigsby, Owner of Sage Dental Arts, Young, AZ.

That’s a bit ironic since—as the father of eight, most of whom are home-schooled by his wife—the last thing Bigsby has is ample time. But it turns out that he has struck the perfect balance between focus-ing on high-end esthetics and being a regular part of his children’s day.

For example, being at home allows him to step out of the lab to answer a question about what the kids are studying or even adminis-ter a spelling test while he works. “Since we’re all at home during the day, we have a lot of interaction and my work and home life are very integrated,” says Bigsby. “But I also put in a lot of hours because I handle everything, from waxing to final glaze. I thoroughly enjoy every step, though, and right now don’t want to give up that power by hiring someone else.”

Luckily he does have some help: his wife handles billing, his two oldest sons (14 and 16) pour models, his 12-year-old helps with shipping, and his five- and seven-year-olds assemble crown boxes. “The kids really enjoy watching

me work. Maybe they’ll stick with it down the road—they are all very artistically talented—but I don’t want to push them into it.”

If some of the kids do grow up to become technicians, one thing is for sure: they will learn to build porcelain. “I am implementing technology and already have a scanner, but I don’t think I’d ever go all-digital. I’m a firm believer that you have to layer porcelain in order to achieve optimum esthet-ics,” he says.

One other change Bigsby won’t make: moving the laboratory away from home. “If I should decide to grow the business, we would build something on our property. I never want to be more than 10 steps away from the house.”

Since we’re all at home during the day, we have a lot of interaction and my work and home life are very integrated. The kids really enjoy watching me work.

~ CJ Bigsby

Jeff Walker and his brother—a licensed contractor—built his home and the attached 600-sq-ft laboratory from the ground up. Walker even custom-built the lab’s benches and cabinetry.

As a television news photog-rapher, Jeff Walker had an excit-ing career covering the happenings across his state and even traveling on assignment to areas of conflict, like Kuwait and Bosnia. At first, he loved the adventure and creativity of his job and the satisfaction of telling a story through his pictures. However, after more than 10 years in the field and winning numerous awards for his work, Walker made the life-changing decision to leave it behind.

“During my career, things in TV news changed quite dramatically,” says Walker. “Reports shrunk from two minutes to 45 seconds so you could only offer limited informa-tion and so often I had to cover personal tragedies—everything just felt wrong to me. I began to dread going to work and I realized I needed more peace in my life.”

While he was considering

earning a Master’s degree in film making, his wife, Tracy, who was studying to be a dental assistant, suggested he look into the dental laboratory technology program at nearby Portland Community Col-lege. The rest, as they say, is history.

Walker finished the PCC pro-gram in 2004, worked for a few laboratories and ultimately opened his own lab—London Bridge Den-tal Lab—in his home in 2010. “Once I carved my first wax tooth, I was hooked,” says Walker. “Den-tal technology combines every-thing I love: it’s creative, artistic and gives me the opportunity to own my own business.”

Walker now has nine regular C&B clients and loves the flex-ibility his home lab affords him, including being available to his three young sons, ages 6, 11 and 13. “I’m lucky to be able to work so close to them,” he says.

Mini-technicians Connor and Logan Birrell enjoy spending time with Mom in her laboratory.

“Being a ceramist and giving the patient a reason to smile are what drive me. It’s what I love about this profession,” says Jes-sica Birrell, CDT, FACE, who opened Capture Dental Arts in her Saratoga Springs, UT, home three years ago. After working in a larger laboratory, Birrell aspired to be her own boss and wanted the freedom to be more creative, explore new ideas and focus on the partnership approach to dentistry.

An added bonus: being home for her three children, ranging from four to 11 years old. She’s created a kid-friendly environment in the laboratory, complete with a play area, and employees who are happy to show “mini-technicians” a technique or two. Her four-year-old son, Logan, has already learned the names of all the teeth.

Combining a business startup with motherhood has been a chal-lenging juggling act and she’s pulled a lot of all-nighters. Even her chil-dren are aware of how hard she works; her other son, Connor, who is eight, once said, “Mommy, teach me to make teeth so you can go to bed.”

But being there for her family and watching her children grow have made it worthwhile. “I’ve shown my kids that if you have a dream, you can push through all the hard work and make any goal a reality. My life is a crazy, mixed up wild mess—and I love every minute of it!” she says.

After one and a half years of working solo, she hired two part-time employees—an office assis-tant and model technician—and just recently added an intern and full-time technician to the team. Birrell’s passion is to imitate natu-ral esthetics as closely as possible

while staying conservative, spe-cializing in smile design cases. She is also an accomplished photogra-pher and was recently licensed as a makeup artist so she now offers her dentist-clients marketing packages with before-and-after pictures, providing them with makeup art-istry, photography and graphic design services.

Looking forward, Birrell plans to move out of the house once her children are in school full time. She wants to maintain a three- to five-person staff but would like to incorporate a training/education area for dentists and technicians in the lab. She’s currently talking to town officials and the local bank about the possibility of building a city arts center in town that will also house Capture Dental Arts. “It’s my way of giving back to the community and helping to take my lab to the next level. I believe there’s no limit to what we can accomplish in life and with this exciting company. I love what each day brings,” says Birrell.

From l. to r.: The staff includes Thomas Bullock, Technician; Cameron Carson, an Intern; Owner Jessica Birrell, CDT, FACE; Amanda Marro, part-time Office Assistant; and grady John-son, part-time Model Technician.

Two years ago, when his long-time landlord retired, the building that housed Ted Shearer, CDT’s lab came under the management of her son and negotiations on his lease quickly turned sour. “Since we are ‘empty nesters,’ my wife suggested I move the lab to the house,” says Shearer, Owner of TRS Dental Technologies, Pleas-ant Hill, CA.

Using a spare bedroom for waxing, metal finishing and por-celain work—and keeping the “dirty” tasks like sandblasting and plaster in the garage—he saves more than $1,000 a month in rent. “The downside is that I miss all of my friends and neigh-bors who I would see when the lab was downtown. But I’m very happy I made the move.”

Old-Fashioned Style with a Dash of Digital Tom Lehman, Lehman Dental Arts, Ltd., Brooklyn Park, MN Age: 63years in industry: 43Lab opened: 1999

When Tom Lehman receives digital images and shades from his clients, he uses PhotoShop to enlarge the image and sharpen the contrast to help him better recreate a natural look.

Tom Lehman, Owner of Lehman Dental Arts, Ltd. in Brooklyn Park, MN, likes to build crowns the old-fashioned way. A 1969 graduate of Southern Illinois University, he ultimately made color his niche by attending sev-eral courses on this topic from a variety of well-respected clinicians throughout his career. “I don’t think you can replicate nature by painting color on the surface of the tooth,” says Lehman. “I build the shading into my crowns using colors from the inside out starting with the opaque.”

But there’s one area in which Lehman has gone high tech: digi-tal photography and software. “If I need to discuss something with

a client I’ll take a photo, add an arrow in PhotoShop pointing to the specific area and email it to him,” he says.

This high-tech medium is also helping Lehman build more beautiful crowns using his pre-ferred traditional techniques. For instance, when Lehman receives digital images and shades from his clients, he uses PhotoShop to get a better look at natural esthet-ics. “There’s a huge benefit to seeing the tooth on screen,” says Lehman. “Enlarging the image and sharpening the contrast help me understand where the shade is coming from and how deep it goes, which helps me recreate a natural look.”

“One of the biggest miscon-ceptions about home-based labs is that we are discount, dirty, dingy operations that are only interested in cutting corners,” says Mike LaRocque, Owner of LaRocque Dental Lab LLC in Rixeyville, VA. A technician for over 30 years, LaRocque started his 750-sq-ft lab in the basement of his home in 1989 and it’s no dark, dreary cellar—the spa-cious, well-lit lab is the perfect size for giving his clients local, personalized service.

In a recent article, LaRocque’s local newspaper, the Culpeper Star-Exponent, featured the small laboratory and LaRocque’s long career, from the military through working with larger laboratories in Northern Virginia. After own-ing a five-person lab outside his home for several years, he decided a smaller operation would better fit his style of business. “Half of

my time was spent dealing with employees and paperwork rather than working at the bench,” he told the newspaper. With the help of his wife/pickup and delivery driver,

Bonnie, LaRocque can now focus on making the restorations.

A home-based business is also a way to simplify their lives and allow them to work to live instead

of live to work. “I’ve traded vol-ume for time and quality,” he says. “I’ve got less paperwork, no rent, no commute. I’ve really got it made.”

Active Nature Lover Relishes working at homeBennett Becvar, CDTBennett Dental Lab, Borden, iNAge: 54years in industry: 28Lab opened: 1987; moved into home in 2005

when he used to work at a large lab in downtown Louisville, KY, Bennett BecVar, CDT, would dream all week about spending the weekend by the lake. These days, he doesn’t have to wait that long: he now lives—and works—on the lake in Borden, IN, and can enjoy it at a moment’s notice.

Without having to commute or necessarily work a set sched-ule, BecVar is able to fully take advantage of the natural oasis out his back door. “I can take a walk with the dogs, go fishing or swimming, and then get right back to my cases,” says BecVar who also makes time to play in a tennis league and take painting classes. “I love nature and am inspired by it. I have a camera with me most of the time.”

As you might imagine, time management is even more impor-

tant with this view out his window. “There’s a constant temptation to do something outside rather than stay inside and work,” he says. “But I’m always mindful that the more time I take away from the lab during the day, the more I’ll have to work at night. I do end up work-ing many hours, but at least I’m in control of my own schedule.”

From his laboratory window, Bennett BecVar, CDT, looks out at Lake Michelle in Borden, In. A few years ago when suffering from back pain, he built a high shelf on his bench that would allow him to work while standing. Although BecVar’s back is better, he still stands for just about all phases of production.

A Systematic Approach for Fabricating Precision-Pressed Dentures

ThE ivOBASE SySTEM FROM ivOCLAR vivADENTFeaturing precision press technol-ogy and specially designed resins, Ivoclar Vivadent’s IvoBase® System eliminates the technique-sensitive steps associated with traditional denture fabrication. The result is a precision denture base with high fracture toughness, low thermal shrinkage and low residual mono-mer content.

The system features a fully auto-mated chamber that handles all the processing from press to cure and a display that shows the cur-rent operational status at a glance. It incorporates the IvoBase Injec-tor, flask set and two types of acrylic: IvoBase Hybrid for univer-sal applications and IvoBase High Impact for load-bearing dentures. Both acrylic types are available in several natural shades, including the popular Preference Shade.

The acrylics are formulated to integrate the benefits of both heat- and cold-/warm-curing materials. Unlike conventional cold curing, heat curing pen-etrates the polymethylmethac-rylate (PMMA) tooth base and produces low residual monomer content, good clinical resistance and a good bond to the denture teeth. However, cold- or warm-curing offers easier handling of the denture, short processing time and accurate fit. For details, call 800-533-6825 or visit www.ivoclarvivadent.us.

using Ivoclar Vivadent’s IvoBase System you can fabricate strong and accurate, precision-processed conventional and implant-retained dentures in a relatively short time. Here’s a look at the process:

STEP 1

Prepare the flask and invest the waxup. The process is similar to conventional processing with the addition of pre-formed wax sprues that allow the acrylic to flow into the mold.

STEP 2

Once the wax sprues are placed, isolate the upper flask half with a flowable silicone that has a shore hardness of at least 70. Next, boil out the waxup, condi-tion the teeth and isolate the stone surfaces with separator.

STEP 3

Mix the IvoBase Hybrid or IvoBase High Impact (20ml of monomer, 34g of polymer for either acrylic).

STEP 4

Insert the capsule into the flask and place it into the IvoBase press.

STEP 5

Select the appropriate program using the push-button operator interface, then press “start.” The controlled heat/pressure poly-merization feature of the IvoBase System allows for continuous injection of the acrylic into the mold while it polymerizes. The low start temperature (less than 40°C) minimizes thermal shrink-age and the patented smart thermo-management technol-ogy controls and compensates for polymerization shrinkage.

Once the program is com-plete, allow the flask to cool and divest the dentures.

STEP 6

The density resulting from the processing cycle—combined with careful attention to wax-ing, flasking and separating—provides a denture that requires minimal finishing and polishing. You can use the same finish-ing techniques and tools you use for conventional dentures (cross-cut carbide burs, sand-paper wheels, polishing points, pumice with rag wheel and universal polishing paste, etc.). The dentures can be remounted and occlusally adjusted prior to separation from the cast. Once complete, the processed den-tures are finished with a final trim and polish.

Wirobond C+BEGO USA’s Wirobond C—non-precious alloy ingots that have been used in traditional casting for years—is now available in a sin-tered powder form used in SLM production, a method of melting layers together from a scanned .stl file. This sintered powder, Wirobond C+, has a CTE of 14.0-14.2 making it compatible with most leading ceramic systems. SLM manufacturing technology improves the tensile strength, elongation limits and modulus of elasticity versus a cast alloy. Its 24.7% chromium content produces a passivity layer making Wirobond C+ extremely corrosion resistant and biocompatible. For more information, call 800-342-2346 or 401-334-9261, email [email protected] or visit www.begousa.com.

Aurident’s YX alloy offers laboratories

a versatile, noble casting alloy at a moderate cost. YX contains 2% gold, 40% palladium and 25.4% silver. Easy to cast and work with, YX castings have an esthetically attractive soft yel-low color. Its low specific gravity allows a greater number of units per ounce.

With the escalating price of gold, more laboratory owners are turning to YX to realize cost sav-ings without sacrificing quality. Here’s what they’re saying:

“We have been purchasing from Aurident for over 20 years and have been pleased with their development of many new alloys over that period of time. Auri-dent’s YX alloy is, in our opinion, exceptional in that it offers a noble rating with good yellow color and has type IV alloy properties. It casts well and polishes very easily. It has a high noble metal content with a relatively low price.”

~Kevin & Kathryn Taylor Taylor Dental Studio, Montesano, WA

“With current gold market prices so high, Aurident’s YX offers great value not only in cost but in its qual-ity as well. It has great finish and outstanding mar-gin seals and is very easy to work with. Doctors are more than satisfied with the product

they’re getting at such an afford-able price.”

~Jason ByunAdvantech, Fountain Valley, CA

“In a time when alloy prices are high, Aurident’s YX gold has allowed me to offer my doctors a full cast crown that meets the standard of our laboratory while maintaining affordability. It is a great metal to work with.”

~Travis Roy Roy Dental Lab, New Albany, IN

The recent fluctuations in the pre-cious metals markets make Auri-dent’s YX alloy a good noble metal alternative to higher gold alloys.

To order YX, call Aurident at 800-422-7373 or visit www.auri-dent.com.

In the early to mid-90s, enroll-ment in the dental technology department at Kirkwood Com-

munity College (KCC) was so low there was talk of shutting its doors. Today, those doors are still open and stay open even later thanks to growing enrollment numbers.

KCC—one of only 19 ADA-accredited programs left in the country—had always limited the program to 15 students due to lack of space but, three years ago, the program’s waiting list grew to the point where the school could jus-tify adding an evening program. Currently, there are 24 full-time students: 15 during the day and nine in the evening.

According to Betty Mitchell, Program Coordinator and a KCC graduate, several factors are work-ing in Kirkwood’s favor, including the high rate of unemployment. “Our numbers began to steadily increase just as the economy started to decline,” says Mitchell.

“People were losing their jobs and taking the opportunity to change their careers.” About half of the students have entered the two-year program for this purpose.

Technology plays an impor-tant role in the KCC curricu-lum. During the second year, students have the opportunity to use CAD/CAM scanners and milling equipment to fabricate restorations and are exposed to 3D printing technology by visit-ing a nearby laboratory, Dental Prosthetic Services. In addition, the curriculum is placing more of an emphasis on implants.

Located in Cedar Rapids, IA, KCC is just down the road from the University of Iowa and works with the University’s School of Dentistry. In their second year, KCC students get paired up with sophomore and junior dental stu-dents at the University clinic, gain-ing practical experience and seeing treatment first-hand.

A re you interested in a great networking opportunity and chance to enhance

your role as a technical resource to your dentist-clients? Spear Edu-cation—which established a pro-gram for specialist-led study clubs in 2009—is now giving techni-cians and general practitioners the opportunity to establish and lead Spear Study Clubs in their area.

“When GPs, specialists and technicians learn together, every-one comes away with a greater understanding of the type of cases discussed and of what each member of the team needs in order to obtain the best results for the patient,” says Martin Mendelson, DDS, Vice President Faculty Club Develop-ment & Professional Relations. “From a technician’s perspective, helping clients increase their com-fort level with complex treatment

plans increases both the quantity and quality of referred cases.”

The technician-led study clubs will follow the same format as the existing specialist-led study clubs, of which there are more than 200 across the U.S. and Canada. To be

a club leader, a technician must be either a CDT or work in a Certified Dental Laboratory. Each leader forms his own club, consisting

of eight to 12 restorative dentists, specialists (at least one is required), and technicians. Clubs meet eight to 12 times a year; each meeting revolves around the members’ choice of learning modules from Spear’s extensive collection.

“It’s basically a study club in a box,” says Dr. Mendelson. “We provide the club with access to a growing library of modules, cur-

rently around 30, that include interactive DVD-supported pre-sentations on a variety of interdis-ciplinary topics. Approximately 70% of the modules are case-based and come with study models, pho-tographs and radiographs so mem-bers can collaborate on possible treatment plans.”

Founded at Spear by world-renowned dentist and educator Dr. Steve Ratcliff, Spear Study Clubs also benefit from faculty guidance, a members-only microsite to facilitate communication among the mem-bers, and access to the Spear Digital Learning collection of continuing educational materials. Tuition for the first year includes a two-and-a-half-day seminar that the group takes together at Spear’s Scottsdale, AZ facility. As an additional benefit, tuition is waived for Club leaders.

“When GPs, specialists and technicians learn together, everyone comes away with a greater understanding of the type of cases discussed and of what each member of the team needs in order to obtain the best results for the patient.

While Many Training Programs Struggle, KCC Sees Rise in Enrollment

KCC’s Director of Dental Technology Betty Mitchell teaches a sophomore course. While some programs are seeing dwindling numbers and others closing their doors, KCC’s enrollment has been steadily increasing since 2009.
