Fund Raising for New Buildings Phase 2: total to raise 8 million

The year 2014 saw work commence on the second phase of the new buildings and we can now see clearly the footprints of the Clore Graduate Centre and the Donald Fothergill building emerging. This time last year we had some £2.6 m still to raise towards our target of £8.0m. The amount remaining now is £1m. We are on the last lap and look forward to seeing the fundraising target reached and, in about a year from now, the completion of this transformational project.

Peter WatsonDevelopment Director, January 2015

Alumni and Friends of LMH once again provided exceptionally generous support for LMH in 2013-14. It is a pleasure, as always, to recognise and thank all those of you who made contributions. These totalled over £2.65m, which is a highly significant proportion of the resources received by the College. Your names appear in the following pages, interspersed with short pieces about fundraising activity and the projects which benefit from your generosity and far-sightedness. Thank you very much indeed.

The philanthropic support we receive is allocated to the fundraising goals set out in our strategic plan, which are characterised by the term ‘Three Pillar Strategy’ and focus on the individual pillars of Student Support, Teaching & Research, and New Buildings – all clear academic priorities. Since we adopted these objectives four years ago, we have received over £12m in new gifts and pledges, a truly remarkable testament to how much our donors wish to sustain and develop LMH both now and in the future.

LMH Student Fun Run on 24th May 2014

Student GivingA very pleasing development during the year was the participation of student leavers who contributed £1,800 in donations which qualified for a matching contribution from the ‘Leavers Fund’, established by donors to the University keen to encourage the habit of giving at an early stage. In addition to these gifts, 60 current LMH students also staged a Fun Run in May in support of new buildings which raised over £650 and attracted additional support from alumni, to whom the initiative was promoted.

The existing student-led ‘I ♥ LMH’ mug initiative to raise further funds for undergraduate bursaries continues to engage students in giving to the College with a further 36 students taking part. During 2013-14, a grand total of 110 students made a financial contribution of one form or another towards LMH fundraising.

This year’s Annual Fund aims to ‘Raise the Roof’ on two new buildings, on student financial support and on student confidence and ambition. Please visit www.lmh.ox.ac.uk/alumni.aspx to find out how you can support LMH students this year.

>

Annual Fund keeps growing2013-14 was another successful year for the LMH Annual Fund and its Telephone Campaign. Gifts from 1,273 Alumni and Friends contributed a remarkable £518,000 – up from £501,000 during the previous year. Of this, £181,000 was given for student support. This is a tremendous outcome for LMH students from your combined donations and we are most grateful to everyone who contributed.

During the annual Telephone Campaign in March, students spoke to 668 alumni, sharing LMH stories, gaining some valuable careers advice and raising a tremendous £153,321 for Annual Fund projects, the majority (some £77,000) being left unrestricted for LMH to allocate to the areas of greatest need. £49,000 was allocated towards undergraduate bursaries and £10,400 towards postgraduate scholarships.

As always, we are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed and hope that others will join us in support of LMH students during 2014-15.

1964 celebrate their 50th Anniversary of matriculation at the Gaudy in June 2014

Members of 1974 marking their 40th Anniversary of matriculation on Gaudy Sunday 2014

Year Group Giving – Anniversary FundsDuring the last five years, Anniversary Funds have become an important feature of the Annual Fund and have now involved twelve year groups. During 2013-14, two year groups (1964 and 1974) raised donations to the College on the occasion of their 50th and 40th anniversaries since matriculation. Each group wished to allocate their gifts towards bursaries for undergraduates. Paula Flynn, Frances Payne, Diana Quick and Marina Warner led 1964 and raised a remarkable £35,143 in respect of their 50th Anniversary, celebrated at the Gaudy in June. The College has now established a permanent ‘1964 Bursary Fund’ which will fund two undergraduate bursaries every year. Gillian Arthur, Judith Gleeson, Harriet Mitchison and Sarah Wookey gathered 1974 together for their 40th Anniversary in June raising £5.8k. Thank you so much to all those who have been involved with these initiatives, whether in leading the groups or donating - we are most grateful for your support. 266 donors to date, have, between them, raised more than £160,000.

We are now working towards the 50th Anniversary of 1965 which will be celebrated at the 2015 Gaudy Dinner on Saturday 27th June.

The photos below show 1964 at the Gaudy in June 2014, their plaque and 1974 in the Dining Hall celebrating their 40th Anniversary.

Politics after PeeleFollowing the completion of fundraising campaigns for tutorial fellowships in French and in Economics, LMH launched “Politics after Peele” in March 2014. This campaign aims to endow the Tutorial Fellowship in Politics after the retirement of Professor Gillian Peele, who will retire in 2016 after 41 years in post. The hope is to involve alumni whom Gillian has taught during her time at LMH to raise £600,000. The fundraising strategy involves a set of targeted events and tailored mailings over the period of the campaign which will enable Gillian to engage with as many former PPE students as

possible. In the nine months since its launch, ‘Politics after Peele’ has attracted more than £325,000, taking the campaign beyond 50% of its initial target. To date, there have been three events for the Campaign including a launch reception and two panel discussions, all involving Gillian’s former students as well as other colleagues and contacts. We are most grateful to everyone who has attended these events, contributed to them as speakers or sponsors and, of course, to those who have given. We very much look forward to seeing many more LMH Politics alumni as ‘Politics after Peele’ moves forward during 2015.

>

Above: The panel discussion ‘ The Wages of Spin: Politics versus the Media Today’, held at The Reform Club, included (from left to right) Lord Andrew Adonis, reformer, writer and labour peer, Marek Pruszewicz (LMH 1986), Head of Change, BBC World Service Group, Gillian Peele, Steve Richards, award-winning political journalist and Jo Andrews (LMH 1974), Director of Ariadne - European Funders for Social Change and Human Rights, and former Senior Political Correspondent for ITN.

Wedgwood Royalties support Prize in HistoryThe College is fortunate to receive a steady flow of royalties from the sales of books of several of our alumnae authors and former fellows whose works are still in demand after they have passed on. These include Lucy Sutherland, Mary O’Brien, Marjorie Ridley, Anne Pennington and C V Wedgwood.

Dame Veronica Wedgwood OM DBE (History, 1928) graduated with a First and went on to become one of the outstanding English historians of her generation. Her tutor, author and historian A L Rowse, said that she was his ‘first outstanding pupil’. Her main works include The Thirty Years War (1938), William the Silent (1944), The King’s Peace (1955), The King’s War (1958) and The Trial of Charles I. Veronica Wedgwood’s work was characterised by a lucid, elegant style as well as by scholarly research, and she gained a wide readership which few historians have equalled. She died in 1997, aged 86, bequeathing to the College royalties from The Thirty Years War.

In the following year, her LMH contemporary and friend Jaqueline Hope-Wallace CBE (History, 1928) established a prize in her memory. Today The C V Wedgwood Essay prize is awarded to the undergraduate with the highest mark for their History Finals dissertation.

The College decided to add the Wedgwood royalties to the Prize Fund which has grown steadily over the last few years. During 2013-14, the College received £4,000 in royalties.

LMH at Sir John Soane’s MuseumWe are most grateful to Richard Buxton (1982, English), Deputy Chair of the LMH Advisory Council, for his generous sponsorship of an event in support of new buildings in November 2013. ‘Advancing the Classical Tradition’, held at Sir John Soane’s Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, showcased the architectural plans for the LMH new buildings with a talk from Architect John Simpson on Soane and his influence, an exclusive tour of the Museum and a reception during which Richard encouraged guests to contribute to the project. The event inspired major gifts to the project from those present totalling over £550,000.

New Boat for LMHBCOn 19th October 2013, the LMH Boat Club celebrated the naming of its new Men’s Eight ‘Peter and John Robson’ at an event with alumni and friends of LMHBC at the Boathouse. The boat was generously funded by Mark Robson, former LMH Treasurer and Honorary Research Fellow, and named after his sons, Peter and John. Following the unveiling of the boat, the very first Old Boys vs. Current Boys race was held on the Isis. The Old Boys won!

Mark Robson is also President of Friends of LMHBC

Construction of New BuildingsIf you have visited LMH during the last twelve months, you will have seen that construction of the second phase of new buildings at LMH is under way. Contractors arrived on site on 6th January 2014 to begin work on the Clore Graduate Centre and Donald Fothergill Building. They are now building up the internal and external walls of both buildings, now that groundfloor footings are in place, and we look forward to seeing first floors complete by the beginning of February. The two buildings will, once complete, transform the graduate experience at LMH, providing a dedicated Centre for graduate students on site, a facility offered by few other colleges, and an additional 41 study-bedrooms. You can see progress on the website (www.lmh.ox.ac.uk) via a live stream from on-site web cameras, and also on our alumni Facebook page. We are always delighted to receive visitors to LMH and hope that many alumni and friends will visit the College as this transformative project continues to take shape.

We are deeply grateful to the 233 Alumni and Friends who have generously chosen this far-sighted way of providing support to future generations of students and academics at LMH. We are delighted to recognise and thank publicly all those who have let us know of their intention to make a legacy to LMH, by enrolling them as members of the Beaufort Circle. It is a pleasure and privilege to welcome members to the annual Beaufort Circle lunch at the start of each new academic year, and to keep them updated with current activity and development in the College.

Legacies Received

Please consider joining the 233 Alumni and Friends, aged between 30 and 100, who have pledged a legacy to the College in their will. Legacies are a marvellous way to support the students and academics of LMH into the future.

To inform LMH of your intention or to request a copy of our legacy pack, which includes suggested formulation and details of tax benefits, please contact Carrie Fehr, Deputy Development Director.

Legacy to the College from former Principal Sally ChilverThe College has received a most generous legacy from the estate of former Principal Sally Chilver who died in July 2014, one month short of her 100th birthday. Mrs Chilver was Principal of LMH from 1971 to 1979, and it was during her time in office that the College took the historic decision

to admit men. Sally was an alumna of Somerville College (1932, History) and had a long career as an anthropologist. Before coming to LMH she was Principal of Bedford College, London and was also a trustee of the British Museum and a member of the governing body of the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Tom was a kind and generous character well-liked around College and especially within the LMH graduate community. Gifts in his memory from family, friends and other members of the College have been marked with a bench beside the riverbank – a place where Tom enjoyed the peace of LMH.

Members of the Advisory Council provide financial and practical support to the College and guide its Development Programme. We are very grateful for their contribution.

Donors who have made gifts every year for at least ten years

Lady Margaret HallLMH

We are most grateful also to the many alumni who in the last year have given their time, valuable advice and expert knowledge, in serving on College Committees, leading Year Group projects, in writing articles and producing publications, in giving talks and lectures, or in providing venues and hospitality at events away from College – all for the benefit of LMH and their fellow alumni.

If you would like to help LMH face the challenges of the next few years please contact:
