Just six weeks after pur-chasing The World and its sister newspapers in Reedsport and Bandon, our company – like you – now is dealing with the impact of the highly infec-tious coronavirus. To do that, we all need as much information as we can get, as life around us changes rapidly and dra-matically. So beginning today, here are just a few of the things we’re doing to help:- We’re making it easier to get your daily news, by cutting The World’s two-month subscription price in half. You’ll get our newspaper delivered to your door – plenty of so-cial distance - for $14.99 a month up until the first of June. All you need do is sign up before the end

of March.- We’re no longer charg-ing extra for you to re-ceive The World on “pre-mium” days … the Black Friday before Christmas, for example.- And we’re permanently reducing the price of the Saturday newspaper by half. It will be $2 over the counter, rather than $4.- Meantime, we’re giving everyone – paid subscrib-er or not – free access to The World’s informative website, theworldlink.com, until May 1.All in addition to devoting the majority of our local news coverage to the fast-spreading virus and what we can do to cope with it.That’s what community newspapers are sup-posed to do.

COOS COUNTY — Coos County Commissioners have declared a local state of emergency in response to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.The board met Tuesday, March 17 in Coquille to ap-prove and sign the declara-tion which authorizes the county to seek additional emergency assistance from state and federal govern-ments. Under state statute and county code, the board of commissioners are “autho-rized to take and/or direct such actions and issue orders as are determined to be necessary to protect the public and property and to efficiently conduct activities

that minimize or mitigate the effect of the emergency,” ac-cording to the declaration. It also outlines that the board is allowed to suspend procurement rules for CO-VID-19 related purchases as well as create a process for expediting relevant contracts as a way to obtain much-needed goods and services. “The board further delegates authority to the director of Coos Health and Wellness to enter into contracts and conduct all procurements necessary to acquire the la-bor, services, or equipment needed to conduct disease investigations, contract trac-ing and any other appropri-ate public health function necessary to track or pre-

vent the spread of COVID-19 in the most expeditious man-ner possible,” the declaration stated. “When possible, the county counsel and finance shall be consulted in accor-dance with the county rules.”A slight modification was also made to the declara-tion Tuesday morning which included commissioners also be consulted and notified of any of the purchases and de-cisions made by CHW. The board is also able to modify personnel leave, payroll pro-cesses and other workplace requirement related to the coronavirus. The declaration, which was passed unanimously, will remain in effect for the next 60 days.

Bandon Police Department announcement BANDON — Due to recent health concerns and man-dates, the Bandon Police Department asks if a matter could be handled by telephone to please call their office at 541-347-2241 for records or to speak to an officer."We're not aware of any cases of coronavirus in Bandon," said Chief Bob Webb. "How-ever, we're trying to minimize exposure to office staff, as well as our officers, so we can con-tinue to provide quality service to our community."We apologize for any incon-

venience, and appreciate your understanding."

City will help keep the lights on during COVID-19 changesBANDON — With many social distancing orders being made statewide to prevent the spread of COVID 19, the city of Ban-don is giving utility ratepayers a break by suspending any shut-off notices sent out this month.“We decided that those are go-ing to be held off. We won’t be shutting anyone off for a while, which will give folks a chance to get caught up,” said Bandon City Manager Dan Chandler.Utility ratepayers still owe the

balance of any outstanding bills they may have.“We send out notices once a month, and we’ve told people not to worry about the ones that went out this month," Chandler added. "I doubt that we’ll be sending them out next month either."The city has for several years had a drop box for payment, located in the City Hall parking lot. With current social distanc-ing mandates, the city is asking ratepayers to use the drop box to make payments. People don't have to get out of their cars to deposit their payments at the drop box.

BANDON POLICE DEPARTMENT/CITY OF BANDON ANNOUNCEMENTS

BANDON — With the announce-ment by Gov. Kate Brown on Monday that all Oregon restau-rants, bars and clubs must close and gatherings of more than 25 people are prohibited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many local restaurants have stepped up to make sure members of the com-munity can still enjoy their regular dining-out fare, while also helping the local business owners.Brown also announced Tuesday that the cancellation of classes and activities for public schools K-12 will be extended to April 28. While grocery stores are open and there is no shortage of food, parents of school-aged children can get a free lunch for their kids through Friday of this week and again the week following Spring Break. Many of Bandon’s retail stores are still open for business and though restaurants cannot serve patrons inside, many are open for to-go orders, either for pick-up or delivery."Local businesses can be of great help to us at times like this,” said Chamber CEO Margaret Pounder. “Restaurants and other eateries offer hot, nourishing meals and many have take-out options. Bookstores are great sources for good reading to pass the time. Banks can assist with special loan funds. Stores selling food, medical supplies and other necessities are nearby and easily accessible."I could go on, but know that helping to support local busi-nesses, while always important, is crucial at a time like this. These same businesses, as one so eloquently put it, are the ones supporting our kids’ fundraisers, the ones where we gather with friends, where the workers know our names. We need them to be around not only next week or

BANDON BUSINESSES RALLY TO HELP DURING COVID-19 CRISIS

next month, but for years to come. Let’s support them, where we are able, to get them through this time."If you want to support a local business, but maybe belong to an at-risk part of the population, you can purchase a gift certificate now to be used later. Steps like that will enable local businesses to keep paying their staffs – your friends and family members – and keep businesses viable in our com-munity.I’m sure we’ll be sharing more information in the days and weeks ahead. For now: Stay calm. Stay informed. Support your neighbors. Wash your hands. SOUTH COAST – The spring beach cleanup for the SOLVE program has been rescheduled in re-sponse to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.“The health and safety of Oregon’s communi-ties has always been a priority to SOLVE,” states Kris Carico, Chief Execu-tive Officer of SOLVE, in their letter to volunteers. “Due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, there will be changes regarding our upcoming events.”The statewide Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup has been rescheduled for July 5.Five projects were scheduled for March 28 in the south coast area. Cleanups are planned at Horsfall Beach, Umpqua Dunes Beach, Siltcoos Outlet Beach, the Oregon Dunes, Bandon Beach, and Bastendorff Beach.SOLVE asks people who were signed up for any of the volunteer projects to

keep an eye out for email updates. There may be updates over the next few days as SOLVE and its community partners check in on the situation.Volunteers will receive automated emails if an event they signed up for is cancelled. They can also reach out to project lead-ers directly by email or through the project web-page.SOLVE advises that peo-ple feeling sick stay home. They also advise project leaders to incorporate additional measures, such as providing vinyl gloves; sanitizing tools; scheduling events near where water and soap is available; stagger check-in times to avoid crowds; and ask volunteers to pre-register for events. For those still planning to attend an event, cleanups typically go for approxi-mately three hours. Volun-teers will meet at specified locations, then spread out to clean up litter, trash that

came in on the tide, and sift sand for microplastics as well as other small pieces of debris.“Help us protect marine life and maintain the beauty of our coast,” states the SOLVE website’s descrip-tion of the projects.Volunteers can be 13 years or older, though youths must be accompa-nied by an adult. Please note that some beaches have restricted areas due to Snowy Plover nesting season. SOLVE asks that volunteers re-spect signs and roped off areas. They also ask that dogs be kept on leashes. For more information on the projects, visit the solve website at www.solveore-gon.org.
