Undoubtedly, sustainability is having a huge impact on the development of the modern home and of architecture overall. Inevitably, this growing eco-awareness will have a great effect on the way we build and the materials we use. But it would be wrong to see this shift as limiting. It simply means that we will give more thought to the materials we choose, the way they are made and where they come from. Even materials that might not have such good press in environmental terms – aluminium, for example – may still be feasible to use if we can source them in a recycled form.

Natural Selection

Page 17: Living With Arts 2011 (Sep 11)

Almost inevitably, however, there is a return to more traditional and natural materials, especially timber, which many now see as a win-win material as long as it’s sourced from managed and sustainable forestry. Woodland, of course, captures CO2 from the environment and releases oxygen, creating valuable carbon stores. If we then use this material for construction, while replanting, we involve ourselves in an environmentally friendly process.

At the same time none of us want to endorse the destructive harvesting of hardwood or rainforest timbers that are so hard to replace and replant. There’s no doubt that – when using tropical hardwoods such as Brazilian ipe or common Asian teak – extra care is needed in checking its origins. Also it should be used more sparingly than more readily available and faster-growing timbers.

Perhaps the key point is that putting great thought into material choices and being environmentally aware do not have to involve a cap on imagination or creativity. Our homes will not be poorer for paying greater attention to these things, but richer. It is, in a sense, a new kind of organic architecture but one that is not allied to any particular design movement forcing us into a single aesthetic or stylistic direction. The organic approach to building our homes should be liberating, never confining.

“this growing eco-awareness will have a great effect on the way we build

and the materials we use. But it would be wrong to see this shift as limiting. It simply means that

we will give more thought to the materials we choose, the way they are made

and where they come from.”NEW NATURAL HOMEBY Dominic BradburyPHOTOGRAPHS BY Richard Powers
