Continued from front page. The competition itself is sponsored by the Upper Hunter Fire Protection Group and will showcase two hours worth of bush poetry talents of varying ages competing for over $500 worth of cash and prizes.

Entry is only $2 and breakfast prices vary from $3.50 - $12; depending on the size of your hunger.

But don’t be mistaken, this is but one of the many events on offer at the 2014 ROSTO Olives Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces. The festival will be held on the 7th and 8th of June and has a massive program available. In the festivals 24th year, a few changes have been made to the layout as well.

“The markets have been redesigned to allow for greater meandering and browsing of the huge variety of food and craft on offer.” says chairperson of the festival’s committee, Cr Deirdre Peebles of the 100-and-over variety stalls that will be set up over the course of the weekend.

Other features include the famous ‘Sheep in Red Socks’ Noon Parade, Dog High Jump, Rescue Team Demonstrations, Sheep Yard Dog Trials and (of course!) Sparkles the Clown.

With so much to do and see, don’t miss the Festival of the Fleeces this year and especially don’t miss the “Red Socks” Bush Poet’s Breakfast hosted by the talented Greg North.

The “Red Socks” Bush Poets Breakfast will be held at the Merriwa RSL Auditorium (entry via Bow Street) at 9am on the 8th June.

Bringing the bacon to the Pigsty By Rebecca Jenkins

Attention all those who love blues, good food and boutique local drops by an open fi re! The Pigsty in July is afoot once again. The Gum Ball’s little-sister event was a huge success last year and has every expectation of selling out this year. What is Pigsty in July? Well, guests shan’t be wallowing in a giant mud bath. Rather they’ll be wallowing in the indulgent, vintage atmosphere with warm winter food prepared by specially-selected chefs, washing down said food with the boutique beers and local drops that Dashville is renowned for serving and then dancing it all off to a number of bands that’ll get your feet tapping and your heart racing.

To add to the fun, the event has a 2nd-hand-formal themed dress code. Gentlemen are expected to strut their stuff in stylish pre-loved suits, and ladies time to break out those beautiful 2nd-hand-vintage dresses. No matter how loud or from what era, this is the event that gives you a chance to break it out.

As mentioned, Pigsty in July will be serving the fi nest gourmet beers, local wines and cocktails on offer. The Bird Bath Bar will be open for the entirety of the event so there simply is no need for BYO. Besides, that would defeat the purpose of the ‘indulgence’ of the event if the guests had to bring their own consumables, now wouldn’t it?

As far as entertainment goes, if last year is any kind of an indication, this year is going to rock the socks off all who attend! Last year saw the likes of Simon Meli (The Voice) and the Windowbird Band, Pow Wow Vs Fish Fry, V-Tribe, The Snowdroppers and the incomparable Dashville Progress Society playing throughout the day and night. With a little jazz, blues and even reggae in last year’s musical mix, one’s mouth almost salivated in anticipation to see what this year’s line up will bring.

The day will span from 11:30am through till 10pm. If you simply just don’t wish to leave to beautiful surroundings of Dashville, then for a $20 fee, you may bring your vehicle and stay the night. Tickets are $40 each and are only available to over 18’s.

Hurry and book tickets at www.pigstyinjuly.com.au. The website also contains further information on the fi ner details of the day.

Applicants must be between 16 and 23 years old at the time of departure.

Since 1998 when the scheme started, 57 young people have had the experience of a lifetime thanks to the generous sponsorship of businesses and community organisations.

Macquarie Generation has supported the scheme for many years because of the benefi ts it brings to young people.

“The Upper Hunter has great, young people with leadership potential and many already making a real contribution to their community and our region,” Macquarie Generation communication manager, Rob Cooper said.

“The Young Endeavour Scheme is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and unique opportunity for personal growth, enhanced self-confi dence and leadership development,” he said.

“That’s why MacGen has supported the Upper Hunter Shire Young Endeavour Scheme for

so many years. Good luck to everyone in the draw!”

To provide six berths on the Young Endeavour Voyage approximately $30,000 needs to be raised.

There are three levels of sponsorship: Gold (over $1000), Silver (from $250 to $999) and Bronze (up to $249).

Gold sponsors are able to nominate two young people, and Silver sponsors can nominate one young person to be in the draw for a berth. Community organisations are also able to nominate two young people.

There is a nomination fee of $60 and nominations must be received by council by close of business Friday, 13 June 2014.

The ballot draw of nominees is held at a special dinner on 18 September 2014 which sponsors are invited to attend.

The chosen nominees spend 11 days with 23 other young Australians learning how to sail the 44-metre-tall ship and how to work together as a team.

Council’s Young Endeavour Scheme not only gives young people from a rural area the unique experience of an ocean voyage on a tall ship; it challenges and inspires them, building their confi dence, determination and leadership skills.

Nomination and sponsorship forms can be found on the council website www.upperhunter.nsw.gov.au under Featured Programs.

For more information regarding sponsorships or nominations contact Council Community Services Offi cer Jodie Phelps on 6540 1142.

Valley Roller Girls presents SK8ATHON Social SkateBy Zack Phillips

Come along to the Denman Indoor Sports Centre on Friday June 27 and help support the Valley Roller Girls SK8ATHON for Red Nose Day. The event will kick off at 6:30pm and go through into the evening. Entry is a gold-coin donation, and the Valley Roller Girls encourage you to wear red to show your support to SIDS Red Nose Day.Red Nose Day is an annual event held on the last Friday in June. It is the major fundraiser for SIDS and Kids, which is a group of people dedicated to helping and saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth and throughout childhood. It is also dedicated to supporting bereaved families and funding research into stillbirth.

This Red Nose Day, roller derby teams nation-wide are coming together to host the biggest SIDS and Kids fundraiser since the introduction of the sport to Australia. The Valley Roller Skaters will be asking for pledges and be raising a certain amount of money for every lap skated within the two hours. All proceeds from this event will go to the SIDS and Kids charity drive.

Everyone is welcome to this event and all it costs is a gold-coin donation for entry. Throughout the night there’ll be a sausage sizzle, games and prizes to be won. This is a great family event geared at having fun and raising money for a worthwhile cause.

For more information on this event, contact the Valley Roller Girls on their Facebook Page at facebook.com/valleyrollergirls or donate online instantly at [email protected]. The fundraising goal for this year is $10,000.

Great Interest in quad safetyThe recent 2014 Tocal Field Days had an emphasis on quad bike safety. A special presentation was made by trainer, Matt Brett regularly through each day. This provided an opportunity for the college to promote its courses on quad bike safety as well as to create further awareness of the importance of safe riding of quad bikes and the use of quad bars.

“The response from the public and those visiting the Field Days was very positive. All those people whom Mr Brett spoke to strongly supported the use of quad bars or similar protective devices. The benefi ts of these devices are very clear for all to see.” Dr Cameron Archer, Tocal Principal said.

“One landholder said that he had bars on his quads for some years, but had felt that he was on his own, with other owners he knew dismissing their value. Another landholder commended Tocal College and Field Days for placing so much emphasis on quad bike safety.

“Quad bikes used in the wrong situation and often for quite innocent purposes are deadly machines and must be treated with great respect. Quad bars will certainly alleviate some of the risks involved if an operator fi nds themselves in trouble. The best way of course is to avoid situations where the machine may overturn.

“I recall the enormous resistance from car manufacturers when seat belts were fi rst mooted, but eventually they became mandatory despite the protestations from the motor industry.” Dr Archer said.

“I hope the day is not too far off when rollover protective devices are mandated for quad bikes.”

“Quad bikes are now the cause of the largest numbers of deaths on Australian farms, and result in many non-fatal injuries as well. In 2013 there were 59 on-farm deaths, with 15 of these due to incidents involving quads. There were nine deaths relating to tractors and in the same period there were two deaths involving horses.

Any death is one too many and we must strive to make our farms safer. Mandating protective devices on quads would be a great step forward,” Dr Archer added.

Tocal College runs courses on the safe use of quad bikes, giving people the opportunity to evaluate the risks of quad bike use and then develop skills for their safe use on farms and elsewhere.

‘Beginning at the Beginning’ comes to the Muswellbrook LibraryBy Zack Phillips

Are you interested in learning about your family history or perhaps even wanting to trace relatives to see when your family tree originated. If so, come along to the ‘Beginning at the Beginning’ courses at the Muswellbrook Library on Wednesday June 4. ‘Beginning at the Beginning’ is a ‘Family History for Beginners’ event hosted by ex-local Rhonda Brownlow. At the course, Rhonda will teach you tips, tricks and pitfalls into tracing your family history and loved ones. The course will also cover online databases such as ancestry.com and others that are free websites that will help you trace your family tree.

There are many benefi ts to tracing your family tree. Even if you only have a small curiosity now, the more you search and look into it now, your curiosity will grow and you’ll become more interested in your family’s history. With the help of the internet and historical records, scouring your family tree can be quick, easy and reliable.

Before you start researching your family tree, be sure to call some living relative to see what they can remember. It would be helpful if they have pictures or records from your ancestors that you can use to narrow your searches down. Starting from what you know, you can start fi lling your family tree with immediate relatives.

Be sure to start from some living relatives and work your way back through time. This will be the easiest solution, as you can be sure they are related and not random people with the same name. Once you start searching, make sure to document it all and put it into a book. You can fi ll it with historical documents, certifi cates and many others.

For your benefi t on the day, there are two courses taking place: session 1 from 10am – 12noon and session 2 from 1.30pm – 3.30pm. Everyone is welcome, but you must place a booking as spots are fi lling up fast. Book your interest at the Muswellbrook Library on 6543 1913.

Stay Warm, Breathe EasyWith winter approaching residents are reminded to check that their wood heaters are working effi ciently. This will ensure their houses are kept warm without impacting adversely on their household or your neighbours’ air quality.Wood smoke produced from burning solid fuel contains a mixture of pollutants and toxins, including fi ne particles, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene, xylene and formaldehyde. An ineffi ciently-operating wood heater that is producing large amounts of smoke can cause high levels of these pollutants in the local atmosphere.

Residents are encouraged to take a few easy steps to ensure their wood heaters are not emitting excessive smoke. Residents should make sure their chimneys are cleaned annually. A black, sticky residue called creosote can build up in the chimney and restrict air fl ow, which may make the fi re harder to start and cause smoke to fi ll the room. A chimney clogged with creosote can also be a fi re hazard. Chimney sweeps can be found in the local telephone directory.

Residents are also reminded to choose small, dry logs for the household fi re, using plenty of kindling to ignite the fi re quickly and to open the air controls for 10 – 15 minutes when refuelling the fi replace.

A smouldering fi re is generally a smoky fi re, so try to keep the fl ame lively and bright. A smoky fi re affects your health and the health of your neighbours and can trigger asthma attacks.

Cr Christine Phelps, Councillor Spokesperson for Environment and Heritage – Muswellbrook Shire Council urged residents to take care with wood burner heaters to minimise the impacts on local air quality.

“Air quality is an important issue for the whole community and council’s staff is available to offer advice on smoking fi res and will make household visits on request to inspect your fi re and help to get it burning without excessive smoke”, Cr Phelps said.

“Council will also respond to reports of excessively-smokey chimneys in the neighbourhood by providing advice and education resources to those households on how to improve the use of their fi re.”

Further information is available by contacting Muswellbrook Council’s Environmental Services Department on 6549 3700.
