After only ten years of life the wines of Scarecrow have become almost as mythical as the Wizard of Oz scarecrow that inspired the name. Made from circa 1945 vines planted by the legendary film maker JJ COHN, this impossible to find wine is available only to the wineries’ mailing list customers. Prior to the creation of Scarecrow, the grapes from these plantings went into wines like Opus One, Insignia, Rubicon and Robert Mondavi Reserve. Scarecrow is made primarily from a 2 acre plot of the original 1945 vines planted on phylloxera resistant St. George root stock, these vines are believed to be the oldest vines in Napa Valley.

What is this wine worth? In February 2015 a 5 case lot of the 2012 sold for $260,000 uS at the Napa Valley Premier Auction, $4333 uS per bottle. Later in the spring a 10 bottle vertical sold for $200,000 at the June Napa Valley Charity Auction. Are these 7 precious bottles worth 70% of that?? Missing the inaugural vintage of 2003 and two later vintages 2005 & 2008, this is a Napa Valley collectors’ dream.

Lokoya produces minute quantities of appellation-specific Cabernet Sauvignon from low-vigor vineyard sites in the Napa Valley. By selecting only the finest vineyards and farming each parcel to accentuate its unique attributes, Lokoya produces powerful and complex wines that reflect the distinct character of each appellation in which they are grown.

The Jackson-Banke family founded Lokoya in 1995 to showcase powerful fruit from distinct Napa Valley appellations. The late winemaker Greg upton set the wines on course before handing the reins to Marco DiGiulio in 1997. Christopher Carpenter became Lokoya’s Winemaker in 2000 after working as the assistant winemaker for three years. In October 1998, Lokoya made its debut with four Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1995 vintage. Each bore a separate appellation on its label: Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Rutherford.

Lokoya honors the Native American tribe of the Napa Valley who lived on Mount Veeder in the western mountains and named part of it “Lokoya” which, legend has it, means “the place where geese fly over.”
