A common problem…Has this ever happened to you? You listen to something in English but you don’t understand. You can understand a few words but you can’t get the whole meaning. So you go to the back of the book, look at the script and you discover that you know every word! Why does this happen? The reason is simple. In English, words can weaken when spoken together in a sentence. Vowels will weaken. Sounds disappear. Sounds blend together. Syllables drop out. In short, English pronunciation is often reduced.

To fix this problem you need to understand the sound system of English. Of course, you need to practice listening to natural English, but you also need to understand how sounds can change in spoken English. The Spotlight on Listening section is designed to help you understand how sounds can change. The At Home listening section is designed to give you extra practice.

Focus on perfect listening. Listen to the conversations on the audio CD many times. Listen until you can hear and understand all the words. This can take some time, but eventually you will be able to understand more and more

natural English. This textbook is designed to be your bridge to natural real-world English.

Spotlight on ListeningThis section shows you how English is actually spoken. It should help you move from classroom English to natural real-world English. This section should help you understand natural pronunciation and help you develop some useful listening strategies.

Spotlight on MemoryShort-term memory is part of our language processing system. This section helps you to stretch your short term memory. Research has shown a connection between short-term memory, language processing and second language acquisition. In this section, you will listen to a short conversation, and then repeat the same conversation with a partner. It can be a little bit difficult. But it’s good practice. You can also use this section to practice shadowing.

Spotlight on SpeakingThis section shows you how to use strategies to help you communicate. All second language speakers sometimes have problems communicating. Good second language speakers use such strategies to help them communicate meaning. This section tries to help you use these strategies more effectively.

At HomeLearning a second language is not difficult but it does take time. If you use English outside of class, your language will improve much more quickly. For this reason we’ve included an At Home listening section in each unit. At Home can be used in the class or at home for homework. Listen to this between lessons. The more you listen to English, the more you will understand.
