WHEN COWS FLY! What a ride …. I still clearly remember the day I was asked if I would be prepared to accept a nomination for 2VDG - I think my reaction was very similar to most and I immediately snapped back saying something to the effect of “When cows fly!” … but then the idea brewed and it didn’t take long before I realized this was some- thing I could really enjoy and maybe even make a difference in our District. I received so much encouragement, both from my home club, and from many good friends across the District and the MD that it soon be- came clear to me that I had a path to follow, and who was I to ignore that! That was more than 2 years ago now and it is still sinking in that I now have the honor and privilege of being your District Governor. Perhaps it’s prudent for me to also add that I don’t take this duty lightly, I understand the sensi- tive times we are all trying to get through, the difficulties we face in our communities that we have to overcome so as to make a difference; as well as the difficulties we face in our clubs in dealing with accepting change and acknowl- edging different personalities. There is one thing that I truly believe though, no matter what we face, the outcome is our own choice - we decide our own fate … the Difference starts with You! See the difficulties as challenges and always remember the importance of your fellow Lions in the work we do - it’s not about us, it’s about the people we serve. My challenge to you is simple this year! I have already given our Club Presidents a challenge, one that they themselves have developed. (This was done at the President’s weekend and in some cases, representatives were asked to accept the challenge where the president was unable to attend) My challenge to the rest of our Lions across 410D — forget the issues of the past and build on the successes! This year I would like to see NEW service projects and even a few NEW fundraisers … these projects are your lifeblood and what will keep your club together! I also want to see membership growth - it is our duty as Lions to see the survival of LCI in the years to come and if we don’t invite new members to join …. We will face extinction! In the pages to follow, and throughout the year in the newsletters, you will hear more about International President Joe Preston’s theme — Strengthen the Pride … maybe you’ll even hear the song sometime :-) A big part of this is membership growth. The ASK 1 campaign that Lion Joe has devel- oped is simple - this year every Lion simply has to ASK 1 person to join … it really is that easy! Fellow Lions, in the pages to follow you will hear more about projects in our district and the great Lions who are working to make a difference — I want to thank Lion Debbie Olivier for the work EDITION 1 - AUGUST 2014 DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S newsletter The Difference starts with you! International Convention …. TORONTO, Canada

“ Great views, incredible

landmarks, magical shows

and the best company

makes this convention an

occasion I will never forget!

- DG Carl van Blerk

IP JOE PRESTON

WITH A GOLD

FEED ME PLATE

Sharing my time with my fellow MD410 Lions in

Toronto was truly memorable. Moira and Pierre The-

ron, Dave and Shelley Cousins, Martin and June Run-

dle, Otto and Lynette Reynecke as well as Wolsley

and Elsie Jacobson all came, together with Debby and

myself - great friendships were made and new bonds

forged. This is what Lions is all about - we serve our

communities but we also make great friends and meet

new people.

I even had the opportunity to meet up with Facebook

friends for the first time and to finally shake hands

with the people I have got to know so well over social

media.

Being amongst thousands of Lions at the International

Convention was truly spectacular. A lot is gained

from realizing how big our organisation actually is …

we are an very important part of a very big picture.

Each and every project done, each and every soul we

touch is recognized and together, we make a Differ-

ence! Many videos were shown highlighting various

successful projects run by clubs, districts and even

LCIF. These were not only very inspiring, but also

left one with a sense that we are all ultimately in the

same game of doing whatever we can to improve the

lives of others.

Meeting up with Facebook

Friends; Ida Marcum, Tim Anderson,

Bob Corlew, Dawn Rice-Norton, Michael Gibbs and

even Wing-Kun Tam.

OK - So we didn’t work all the time! :-D

Exceptional performances were put on

by the China Disabled Performing Art

Troupe, Catapult Entertainment, Olivia

Newton John, David Foster, Neil Seda-

ka, Brian McKnight and the amazing

Hoi-Yan Sui, a young blind girl with a

voice of an Angel … YouTube her!

Joseph "Joe" Preston, of Dewey, Ari-

zona, USA, was elected president of

Lions Clubs International.

President Preston is temporarily retired

from the automotive industry. He has

over 30 years of experience as a fleet

sales manager.

A member of the Bradshaw Mountain

of Dewey-Humboldt Lions Club, Presi-

dent Preston has been a Lion since

Kouga Lions received cakes from District 410D (to distribute to a worthy cause) and decided to celebrate "Christmas in July" at

Ons Tuiste a home for the aged in Humansdorp (about 180 residents). We decorated the tables with a Christmas theme and had a Christmas Tree and Christmas carols playing in the background. Those who were able to come to the hall were entertained to

afternoon tea, Lions Christmas Cake, savoury tart and chocolate cake and a small gift. ZC Tilly and LP Sanet and L Sandra from St Croix Lions joined us for the afternoon. The first surprise was a visit from Father Christmas who handed the gifts to those in Frail

care who were unable to attend. Lion Francis then produced a couple of bottles of sherry and it was the second surprise and cer-

tainly warmed up the party. Unfortunately we did not manage to organise "snow" but it was a cold, blustery day. It was a fun afternoon and everyone chatted happily. The joy on many faces is more than enough "thank you" for the little time and cost of

such a project. It was a new adventure for our Club but I think could become an annual event. Thanks to St Croix Lions for join-ing us and all their hard work.

in Chatty

On the evening of

Mandela day, the Lions of St Croix served

hotdogs, coffee and bar ones, to the Emergency Services, from Cape Road 383,

to thank them for their long, hard and unselfish hours they work. We served from 20h00 until 22h00.

On the 19th of July 2014, President Sanet, Zone Chair Tilly Strydom and Lion Sandra went to Humansdorp to assist Kouga Lions

with their Christmas in July project at the Onse Tuiste Retirement Home

Although great plans were underway to have a mara-

thon session sanding, repainting, repairing and clean-

ing up the children’s play park area at our clubhouse,

at the meeting on the night before the 18 July and

Mandela Day, the heaven’s opened and we had a

windstorm of note. It was decided that seeing all the

equipment was wet and thus impossible to work on,

we would do a stock inventory of our club and have a

braai as well for fellowship – the 67 minutes will be re-

scheduled. It did, however, eventually turn out to be a

gloriously sunny day!!

Our Lion Val went ahead and baked her delicious

chocolate cakes and handed them out around

the village.

Page 8: Lions District 410D DG Newsletter August 2014

An unfortunate family whose house burnt down in Karatara were handed warm cloth-

ing donated to us by Eden Lions and bedding received from Lake Pleasant Hotel.

Volunteer Pastor Hansie Strydom ensured us that he would get the clothes to the

mom and her three children as the road was not suitable to travel on. Here Pastor

Hansie is seen with Mary Allen, wife of Honorary member John and Lion Val.

A big thank you to Eden Lions for their donation of warm clothes; we were able to

help out two families, the

Karatara family and a young

athlete from Sedgefield who

also lost everything in a fire.

It is Melodrama time in Sedgefield again – the biggest fund raiser for a number of

charities of which our Lions club is a grateful beneficiary. However, our Lions are

moving and shaking on the stage themselves to make this all happen, it takes giving

up many nights of sacrifice and rehearsals – we wish them well and “break a leg” on

show nights!!

Management of Kings Mall, which is our local shopping centre, invited the public to make donations of blankets and good second

hand clothing during June with collection boxes being positioned at various shops. We felt very privileged when we were ap-proached to assist with the distribution of these goods and a pleasant Sunday afternoon was spent sorting these wonderful dona-

tions. This enabled us to donate 20 warm blankets to the DJ Sotheby old age home which is a very needy centre in East London. We

gave little children from a crèche at the Ilitha Community Centre in Mzamomhle some lovely kiddies clothing, cold drinks and

pretty blankets. We also visited Gonubie Frail Care Centre and gave each resident a nice warm blanket, some of which were cro-cheted/knitted by a group of ladies who meet weekly at a centre called Hands-On in Gonubie to do this for charity, whilst others

were from the Kings Mall donation box. We visited the only child patient at the East London TB hospital and gave her a lovely knitted blanket, beanie and two little knitted dolls, which really pleased her. We also visited the Justin Selby Care Centre for men-

tally and physically handicapped children and gave them a lot of beanies, plenty of little knitted dolls and some of our pretty cro-cheted blankets.

For the Mandela Day celebrations we donated second-hand clothing, cold drinks and sweets to the Isiaha 58 school to assist

their pupils with their project of treating children who live on a local dump site to a treat.

Excited, yet a little shy, these little ones from Llitha crèche were very curious to

see what we had brought them.

IMPORTANT LCIF NEWS

Donations that are sent to LCIF do need to specify the recognition award it is intended for at the time the donation is presented to

LCIF. The Melvin Jones Fellowship program, by LCIF board approval, is currently the only LCIF recognition that provides donors the

option to accrue funds and name a recipient at a later date. The MJF funds accrued are not interchangeable for other types of

recognition awards and can only be used for Melvin Jones Fellowships.

For LCIF recognitions other than the Melvin Jones Fellowship; such as Contributing Members and Honor Rolls, the recipient name and

type of recognition award requested is to be provided at the time the one-time donation payment is presented to LCIF. Because

funds cannot be accrued for these recognitions programs, recipients need to be processed when the required donation is received.
