The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club celebrated the 50th year of the Carngham and Linton merger in the final round against Skipton on August 11th.

Our senior footballers and netballers competed in special commemorative 50-year uniforms and there was an extensive display of history on show in the clubrooms.

The one-off football jumpers combined the royal blue, red and gold colours of the former Carngham and Linton Football Clubs on the back, along with the red, white and black of the combined Carngham Linton club on the front. Logos of all three clubs and the football premiership years were also featured on the front of the jumpers. The netball dresses also featured the same colours, with all of the club’s netball premierships listed on the back of the dresses.

In a great day of competition against Skipton, Carngham Linton scored victories in all netball grades along with the Under-18 and reserves football to win the Beaufort Bendigo Bank Shield contested annually between the two clubs. In a thrilling senior football match which really excited the crowd, the Saints went down to the Emus by just 2 points.

Thank you to the Skipton FNC for their cooperation with the

earlier start time in the senior football, their attendance on the day and also in the clubrooms after the game for the presentation of the shield.

We then headed to the Bray Raceway Dining Room in Ballarat for a 3-course dinner in the evening. The event featured the launch of the Carngham Linton Football Netball Club Hall of Fame and the announcement of our

best 50-year senior football and netball teams. In a wonderful night, it was fantastic to see over 200 people from all eras of the club in attendance.

Eleven inaugural members were inducted in to the Carngham Linton FNC Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Ivan Quilliam, Hans Verdoorn, Eugene Grigg, Brendan O'Brien, Sharon Nunn, Toni Palmer, Karen Spratling, Frank O'Brien, Braith Nunn, Darren Quilliam and Sam Richardson on becoming the first inductees.

An anonymous panel also selected best 50-year Carngham Linton senior football and netball teams. Congratulations to all those players who were named in the teams. Profiles of the Hall of

Fame inductees along with the 50-year football and

Emergency food pantry. Please consider becoming a regular donor to the pantry. A tin or jar a week can make a big difference to a person or family who need a little bit of support either short or long term. We will I putting out the hampers for Christmas in September at Wares, Plants ’n’ Things and the shire office. Linton Mortchup Reservoir Environmental Landmark

Historically Known as Lovers Walk. To promote the health and Well-being of our Community.

The Linton Community is in the running to receive $200,000 to improve the Mortchup Road Reservoir. The funding would support some of

the identified improvements in the concept design prepared by Chris Walker, Terraine Design who developed the plans for Linton's Community Plan 5 years ago. Some of the improvement include removal of blackberries, modest 'board walk' that connects to the walking track removing the need to walk on the road on the south side, a bridge over the spill way, designated car parking, improved paths, historical and flora fauna signage to name a few of

the connected enhancements.

This project looks at improving the environment and making better use of the area to encourage the community to use the location for walks. The project aims to improve the health and well-being of our community though physical activity. It enables people to access the area and walk the lake with ease in a circuit for approximately 1 kilometre. It will connect local people as they talk about their community and how wonderful it is that they have a location that they can sit and relax or just take a stroll or jog around the lake.

Lighting for night time lawn bowling

We are seeking the installation of lighting at the Linton and District Bowls Club.

They are to be used by local members and to entice local people to come and try, and hopefully build the membership base. We welcome diversity and encourage any one to come and enjoy a social night un-der lights.

We run Bare Foot Bowls over the Summer months, so these lights would broaden the appeal, which means that isolated people can en-gage in social activities for a longer period of time.

Current members will benefit by having facilities that allow night time bowling competitions and training.

The most exciting part is the fact that people who generally don't attend because of work commitments will have a chance to bring their family and friends down for a social game. We are hop-ing to provide a place for mums to come and try the game and to engage in social interaction with other community members.

We are looking to provide the disabled community an avenue of social interaction through bowing under lights, in a small town where the only other sport is football.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

FUNDING ANNOUNCED FOR OUR NEW SHED! On the 29th of August, Jenny Mikakos MP, Minister for Families and Children, joined Geoff Howard, State Labour Minister for Buninyong, Michaela Settle, Buninyong Labor candidate, Cr Kirby, Golden Plains Mayor, and the Linton community to announce vital funding for the construction of the new Linton Men’s Shed.

Moving from a resident’s garage to a new space, the existing shed will be retired and a new shed built, providing a safe and productive space for men to work on common projects, form friendships and give back to their community.

One of the exciting and challenging parts of the new projects being undertaken by our Men’s Shed over the coming year iwill be the setting up of a community garden on our new site. This will be done in collaboration with others, with the intent being to build a food garden that will help provide fresh fruit and vegetables for those in need.

This garden project will be a part of the Linton Emergency Food Bank that is already operating and collaborate with Warren Bowen’s work with his Garden to Plate enterprise. All of these are about adding value to the life of our community, providing opportunities for people to work with and to work for others around them.

This new initiative comes about as a part of our wider goal to provide as wide a range of opportunities to engage with men across the District. We have been told that some would be more interested in gardening that working with wood or other activities and this project is, in part, a response to those requests.

We would like to invite men who may be interested in assisting with the planning, establishing and the operation of this project to come along and join us. Over the longer term we would be hoping to have vegetables, fruit, chickens, along perhaps with bees and – whatever else people have an interest in developing.

The garden will be a genuine community garden and not just a garden for Shed members. While there may be times when the garden will be set aside for members, it will be there for all who wish to be a part of this community gardening, for all gardeners. This will also include a range of opportunities for children to experience the joys of growing and eating their own veggies.

And so there is much to be done: we need to decide how many plots are available and how they will be assigned; find space for storing tools, making compost and drawing up the pathways between plots! We will be looking at the planting of flowers, shrubs and trees around the garden’s edges to promote good will with our neighbours and add to the overall sense of peace and beauty of the place. We can add to this all kinds of other realities we are yet to consider.

And there is more! We want all parts of the garden to be accessible to anyone wanting to access it, to share in its produce, take part in what is happening or just hang out and enjoy the social aspects of gardening. That means we need to have a mixture of raised garden beds as well as the traditional in-ground beds. Those of us with old bones do not want to have to spend too much time on our knees!

Here is our invitation: We would like to invite all interested men and women in Linton and the surrounding District to come along to our block of land in O’Beirne Lane at 10am, Saturday September 29th to have a look at what we have, to share ideas, suggestions and to make a contribution towards getting this garden up and running. We would also offer a further invitation to men interested in gardening to get into contact, become a member and join us in contributing to the good life in Linton.

Recent house fire amplifying this September’s Safety Message A major house fire in Diamond Creek resulted in the rescue of a number of pets, as well as great operational work by all the firefighters and other agencies at the incident.

Just before 1pm on Friday 3 August, Diamond Creek Fire Brigade responded to a reported house fire. There were multiple Triple Zero (000) calls reporting flames coming through the roof, as well as extensive amounts of smoke from the structure.

A pair of BA operators was sent in to do a primary search, while an exposure line was established on the northern side of the property to protect a neighbouring property. A 64mm feed into the primary truck was quickly established, with a second feed established soon after from a hydrant some distance away. The rostered duty officer put out a community advice message in relation to the amount of smoke in the area.

With neighbours and friends of the homeowner on scene, the crews were quickly able to determine that there were two dogs and two cats inside. With the assistance of the bystanders, the first of the two dogs and one of the cats were quickly rescued. The second cat, Storm, was seen running from the property and was later reunited with the owner. The second dog was found later cowering under a tall boy in a bedroom. Once rescued, Roxy received oxygen therapy .

A comprehensive overhaul of the property was conducted after it had been extinguished. A thermal imaging camera was used to find and cool any hot spots. After this activity, the crew worked with the homeowner to identify where precious items were located in the home and these were successfully retrieved despite the home being largely destroyed by fire or damaged significantly by smoke or water.

Later, fire investigators arrived to determine the cause of the fire.

Exciting news. We have a play for the LOLA weekend written by Julia Cull based on local historical incidents and anecdotes. It's a bit of fun and full of local flavour. Hoping to see you all there at the 4.00 performances on both the LOLA Saturday and Sunday in

October. The next couple of months will see us busy rehearsing, set building and sourcing props and costumes.

Welcome to Linton and to the play reading group Carol and Greg who are handling being thrown in at the deep end admirably. Extra hands as we begin the process of putting on a play are most welcome.

Strawberry—Rhubarb Crisp INGREDIENTS

• 1/3 cup strawberry jam

• 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon or nutmeg

• 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries

• 2 cups sliced fresh rhubarb

• 3 tablespoons plain flour

• 1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats

• 2 tablespoons cornmeal

• 2 tablespoons honey

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees c.

2. In a large bowl, stir together preserves and cinnamon. Add strawberries and rhubarb; stir gently to coat.

3. Add flour; stir gently until combined.

4. Spoon into a 9-inch pie plate. Bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, stir together rolled oats and cornmeal. Stir in honey and vanilla until combined.

6. Sprinkle over strawberry mixture. Bake, uncovered, about 20 minutes or until topping is golden brown and fruit is tender and bubbly.

Cool about 20 minutes before serving. Serve warm with cream or ice-cream.

Linton and District Historical Society Inc. Report for September 2018

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on Monday 17 September at 7.30pm in the Shire Offices.

Our exciting guest speaker this year will be Margaret Anderson, the Director of the Old Treasury Building in Melbourne, whom we have persuaded to come to Linton to talk about their latest exhibition, entitled Gold Rush: 20 Objects, 20 Stories [at the Old Treasury Building from 9 June 2018 – 26 May 2019].

This new exhibition tries to capture something of the turbulent times of the Victorian gold rush through the stories associated with just 20 objects. From a replica of the largest nugget then found in the world, to tiny spear points worked by the Dja Dja Wurrung people from discarded glass bottles, these objects suggest some surprising new perspectives on a well-known period. And they invite us to speculate on the ways in which material objects can serve as historical evidence.

In her presentation to our AGM Margaret Anderson will outline the stories associated with several of the objects in the exhibition. They include a lovely 1850s crinoline dress, an apparently nondescript glass bottle recovered from an archaeological dig, and some remarkable memoirs penned by an ordinary working woman on the goldfields in the early 1850s.

This should be a terrific event! Our AGM business will be short

at the beginning and Margaret’s talk will be accompanied by a power point presentation. We will conclude with a hearty supper. All Lintonians, members and non-members, welcome.

Greetings from the midst of Term III - the one everyone expects to be quiet. Well let me tell you, there’s no such

thing anymore! After select 5/6 students started off with Somers Camp in the first two weeks, we’ve managed to pack

in a few more highlights:

• Prep students celebrated their 100th day of school with the rest of the P-2 grade, decorating the classroom and

undertaking 100-themed activities;

• The whole school is playing table tennis at the centre in Wendouree for our Term III Sporting Schools;

• Book Week has overrun the school with a Sovereign Hill excursion, Art activity morning, Dress-up Day,

Storyteller Thursday (supported by LOLA) and Buddy Books.

• Grade 3/6 students will be attending a ceremony that commemorates the ‘Battle of the Pacific’ at the Shrine of

Remembrance on the 5th of September;

• Grade 3-6 STEM classes are in the middle of a paper plane challenge that culminates in a tournament on the 13th

of September that will test speed, distance, flying time and accuracy.

• School Photos and Footy Colours Day will round out the term towards the end of September.

These FREE sessions are designed to give you the information you

need to be able to know what to do in an emergency if a trained first

aider is not available. The first part of the session will cover the

basics of CPR while the second will show you how to use a defib

machine. Please note: You can attend just the CPR session if you

wish but if you want to attend the defibrillator course, you MUST do

the CPR session first. Bookings essential - spaces limited.

MAYOR MESSAGE – SEPTEMBER 2018

Council will be offering residents, with support of local vets, a 50% discount on desexing with each new cat registration from Monday 1 September 2018 for a limited time. This initiative aims to address increased numbers of cats being impounded and eu-thanised in Golden Plains Shire.

To be eligible for the offer, the cat must be currently unregistered and the vet practices will need to process registration applications on site at their facilities.

Contact one of two Vet clinics to organise an appointment (and

mention this offer). Residents in the south of the Shire should

contact the Golden Plains Veterinary Practice on

5281 2226, and residents in the north of the Shire should contact

the Smythesdale Veterinary Practice on 5318 5750.

‘Pick my Project’ voting is now live, which means Victorians can

vote on their favourite projects, with 13 fantastic Golden Plains

Shire projects put forward by residents, community groups and

organisations.

Pick My Project is a State Government community grants initia-tive, with $30 million available to fund local projects. Victorians were asked to come up with project ideas earlier this year and make a submission.

Members of the Golden Plains community are encouraged to view the list of local projects and help make their favourite pro-ject ideas a reality by voting for the top three eligible projects in their community by 17 September.

SPORT CARNGHAM LINTON FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club has had two of its teams qualify for the Central Highlands League finals in 2018.

The Under-18 football side finished the season in sixth position, however were unable to get over the line in their Elimination Final against Creswick. In a match that could have gone either way, Creswick recorded a 7-point victory in muddy conditions at Dunnstown. Congratulations to our Under-18 boys for making the finals and for all your efforts during the year.

Our Under-13 netballers finished the season in second position and were victorious over Hepburn in their first final. The girls will now play off in the Preliminary Final on September 1st and try to make it through to the Grand Final.

The club has also been allocated the catering duties for the Central Highlands Grand Final at North Ballarat on September 8th. This is a big commitment for the club, and any assistance from volunteers to help with food stalls and barbeques around the ground would be greatly appreciated.

The Carngham Linton Vote Count and Presentation Day will be held at the Carngham Recreation Reserve on Sunday September 16th, commencing at 11am.

These colour, 150-page, A4 size landscape format books feature a huge collection of photographs, match details, articles and club history on black background pages with a

high-quality gloss finish. The book not only includes the 50-year history of the Carngham Linton FNC, but also covers the history of the previous Carngham and Linton Football Clubs.

The books include the names of all Carngham Linton football and netball premiership players and a huge selection of team photographs and action shots along with detailed descriptions. Many of the

photos have never before been published.
