Did You Know…There is an idea that when the Temple was defiled by the Seleucid troops, it was right before the Festival of Sukkot, and so the people were not able to celebrate that holiday. When the revolt succeeded and the Maccabees rededicated the Temple, they did so and had Sukkot late. From II Maccabees 10: 6-8 “They kept eight festival days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of Tabernacles, remembering how, not long before at the time of the fest of Tabernacles, they had been living in the mountains and caverns like wild beasts. Then, carrying branches, leafy boughs and palms (lulav), they offered hymns to Him who had brought the cleansing of His own Holy Place to a happy outcome. They also decreed by public edict, ratified by vote, that the whole Jewish nation should celebrate those same days every year.” Indeed, Sukkot and Chanukah are both 8 days long, and we recite a full hallel on both Sukkot and Chanukah. So, when you celebrate Chanukah this year, if you want to put a lulav or an etrog next to your chanukiyah, it would not be such a weird thing do to. Chag Urim Sameach!

-Ben Kreshtool, Ritual Director

How to Light the HanukkiahThere is a debate in the Talmud between the houses of Hillel & Shammai about how one should kindle the Hanukkah lights. Beit Shammai argues that one should start lighting 8 lights and decrease by one each night as that is how the sacrifices were offered on Sukkot (see above), while Beit Hillel argues that you should increase with a new light each night because we increase in holiness. The halacha (Jewish law) goes according to Hillel and we light a new candle each night of Hanukkah.

So how do you do this? Place your hanukkiah on the table in front of a window and stand facing the hanukkiah with your back to the window. Place the candles from right to left and when it’s time to light the candles, light the shamash first and recite the blessings below. Once the blessings have been recited use the shamash to light the other candles from left to right, always starting with the newest candle.

Baruch ata ADONAI, Eloheinu Melech HaOlam asher kiddishanu b’mitzvotav, v’tzivanu, le-hadlik ner shel Chanukah

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Sovereign of the universe, Who has sanctified us through mitzvoth and commanded us to kindle these Chanukah lights.

Baruch ata ADONAI, Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, she’asah nissim l’avoteinu, baYamim ha-hem, ba’zman ha-zeh.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Sovereign of the universe, Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at that time.

On the first night only

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, shehekheyanu, v’kiyamanu vehegianu lazman hazeh.

Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us and brought us to this season.

The KaddishBy Rabbi Steven Schwartz

The young man stood with his grandmother as she recited the words of the Mourner’s Kaddish. It was her husband’s yartzeit, the anniversary of the date of his death. Tradition had called her back to the synagogue, had asked her to sit through a service in which God’s name was praised, to bend and bow, to speak the old and often arcane words of prayer. And now, after her husband’s name was read, tradition called on her to rise and say the ancient words which marked this day and her loss.He had been gone many years. The grandson, now in his twenties, barely remembered his grandfather. He knew his name, of course. Had heard stories, oft told by family members. “Do you remember the time when…? Ah, that was Joe, that was Joe.” He knew what kind of work his grandfather had done, how much he meant to his family, even what the substance of his personality was. But he could not remember his voice, or the feel of his rough hands, or the wrinkles in the corners of his eyes when he smiled and laughed. Still the grandson stood, feeling a sense of familial responsibility in his heart, and also a deep respect and love for his grandmother. Not to be underestimated, the latter. So the young man also said the words – Yitgadal, v’yitkadash..And what odd words they are! The prayer for grief and loss and heart rending sadness is simply a litany of praise for God. Death is never mentioned. Grief is never acknowledged. Sadness and loss and anger are so strangely ignored in these ‘kaddish-words.’ But of course the prayer is

now more than the words. The words and letters have flown off the pages of ancient prayer books, and then somehow returned to their very place, letters in the same order, words on their proper lines, and yet the meaning, the feeling of them, has changed. They are not what they are, but rather what they have come to be through long years of grief. There is something intensely sacred about that moment. Not in any God related way, not in anything otherworldly or supernatural. But intensely

humanly sacred. A quiet chapel and a late hour. A small group of Jews gathering from some sense of responsibility, creating by their presence the minyan. Darkness softly falling outside. A

flickering candle. Twinkling stars glimpsed through a window in the distant sky. And a young man standing with his grandmother, intoning ancient words, linked by history, tradition, family, and faith. And love.

The prayer for grief and loss and heart rending sadness is simply a litany of praise

for God. Death is never mentioned.

Join us for an in-depth panel discussion on the topic of Islamophobia. What is Islamophobia, where did it come from, and what role does it play in today’s political discourse? Why should it be an issue of concern in the Jewish community? Dr. Rosann Catalano and Dr. Homayra Ziad from the Institute of Islamic, Christian and Jewish Studies (ICJS), and Rabbi Steven Schwartz will address these questions and discuss some of the answers in a fascinating and timely program.

Our Bodies – Our Minds. We struggle with self-care throughout our lives. We extend more thoughtfulness, kindness and compassion to the people that we love then we do to our own selves. In this experiential workshop, Julie Reisler and Rabbi Dana Saroken will help us pay attention to the ways that we take care our bodies and our minds. We will consider how to create more space for self-care and for what is important to us.

Rabbi Steven Schwartz’s Book ReviewJanuary 17, 2018The book chosen for Rabbi Steven Schwartz’s review is Behold The Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue. Although set in the fall of 2007, this novel is very relevant to current concerns regarding immigration to our country.

This book centers on an African family who finds themselves involved with an American family in their effort to assimilate. Their lives are dramatically upended as the immigrants are forced to make an impossible choice.

The review will be presented on January 17, 2018 in the Myers Auditorium following a petite luncheon which begins at noon.

Many thanks to Sonya and Jerry Goodman for their support to Hopewell Lodge. As always, they had a successful event in October and on Thanksgiving Day.

We will be continuing to help with the deliveries for Moveable Feast on Christmas Day. If you are available to help, please contact Myra Katz at [email protected] or Marci Elkin at [email protected].

Our blood drive on October 11 was coordinated by Sonya and Jerry Goodman and others. It was very successful despite having to end early for the holiday, and we collected 58 units of blood.

This year, in addition to our Beth El family Sinai’s LifeBridge Women and Children’s Coalition, we are partnering with CHANA. CHANA offers a Jewish community response to the needs of people experiencing abuse and other forms of interpersonal trauma. They advocate for community awareness, safety and healing. We will provide the children of their clients with toys and other gifts for Hannukah. We are hoping that we can continue to support their clients in other ways as well throughout the year. Let’s let kids be kids so that all the children can experience a very Happy Hannukah.

The Social Action Committee will once again be adopting families from Sinai Hospital’s LifeBridge Women and Children’s Coalition. These families are either dealing with HIV and/or domestic violence. If you are interested in helping to provide a mom and/or child with clothes or toys for the holidays, please contact Ellen Budish at [email protected] or by phone at 443-857-7499. As we approach the end of 2017, Beth El will be sending Hannukah gift bags to our members who reside in assisted living.

For more information on Social Action and their initiatives, please contact Myra Katz at [email protected] or Marci Elkin at [email protected].

The Agus Library is now open. In order to expand library hours, more volunteers are needed. If you are interested in becoming a library volunteer, please contact Marlene Siegel 410-484-1844. Current hours are:

Please look for follow up information. In January we are working on a program in conjunction with the Soul Center. In April we will celebrate the end of Passover in a restaurant. Then, over the summer, plans are in the works for a bowling party. We are keeping busy. Our Sukkot party was a huge success.

Adult EducationA Rabbi and a Theologian Walk into a Coffee Shop…Wednesday, December 6, 13, from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Facilitators: Rabbi Dana Saroken and Rosann M. Catalano, Ph.D.

Few would argue that we are living in a nation at war with itself. We’re in a world dangerously close to veering off its axis; religious traditions are trying to offer guidance and meaning in a time perilously devoid of both. Being religious in such a world requires courage, stamina, a sense of humor, and friends with whom to share ideas and a cup of coffee. Rabbi Saroken and Dr. Catalano invite you to join in for conversation and coffee. Our time together will begin with some teaching and reflections on the week’s topic followed by conversation. Topics have been selected that speak both to our hearts as well as to our minds as we attempt to make sense of and create meaning in our disoriented world. Held in The Soul Center, sessions will be informal and will focus on the following conversation starters:

Week 1, November 29: Three things I know for sure

Week 2, December 6: A poem that anchors my soul and a prayer that speaks to my heart

Week 3, December 13: A hope that I will not concede

Fee: $40 Beth El members, $50 non-members

1st Wednesday@BethElJoin us in the Offit Auditorium on the 1st Wednesday of the month for an evening of music, entertainment, and learning. We begin at 7:30 p.m. Bring your friends and family and meet new friends. You are invited to sponsor any or all of these programs to show your support for our programming.

December 6 Meet HaZamir! HaZamir Baltimore, generously underwritten by the JCC of Greater Baltimore, is one of 36 chapters of HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir. Each week, HaZamir meets to rehearse a shared repertoire, in preparation for regional, national, and international concert events. These events will culminate this year in a Gala Concert at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall on March 18 and the Gordon Center on May 6.

Agus Academy: Shalom Hartman CurriculumDilemmas of FaithMondays, November 6-January 29, from 7:00-8:15 p.m.In an age of radical polarization in modern society, with a rise in religious fundamentalism on the one hand and a rise of atheism on the other, how does the Jewish tradition approach dilemmas of faith? The faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute has created this ten-part video lecture series to explore the foundational Jewish issue of faith. In this series, Hartman scholars engage in broad and deep analysis of some of the many dilemmas that faith in the modern world raises, both in classical Jewish tradition and in contemporary Jewish thought and life. The Dilemmas of Faith curriculum addresses the big questions raised by the intersection of faith and reason, faith and history, faith and politics, and the faith experience.

14 The Voice of Beth El Congregation

Reflections from Dr. Eyal BorOn Tuesday, October 24, I attended our Achshav classes. Twenty teenagers in 8th and 9th grades experienced team building and were challenged to contemplate the meaning of Jewish identity and leadership.

What really impressed me most was how well these teens have already bonded with each other. Their interactions are evidence that true friendships are being developed. They responded to Amy Goldberg with so much interest and enthusiasm. The class was assigned an ice breaker session where the students were trying to line up based on their birthdate without saying a word. This was a challenge which they met successfully.

Let me tell you about the instructors… Amy Goldberg, Assistant Principal is a Towson graduate with a M.A. in both communal service and Jewish education. She has extensive experience with teens. Jason Creeger, an experienced teacher also graduated from Towson and has taught teens for many years both at Chizuk Amuno and Beth El. He is currently a religion teacher at St. Paul’s School for Girls.

The goal of the Achshav program is to build a strong team of students who will be prepared as leaders and confident in their understanding of Israel to take a journey together to Israel in December 2018. After the trip the students will share their experiences and connect others to Israel. My impression is that these students will remain friends for years to come and will always feel connected to Beth El as their spiritual, social and cultural home.

What a great experience it was for me to visit this special class! We still have room for those who have not yet registered. Please contact Amy at [email protected] or 410-484-4543.

We will discover the importance of the oil and light during Hanukkah and the Olive Oil Factory will help us discover the complexity of getting the oil out of olives. Latkes and applesauce will be served for everyone to enjoy! More evidence of the importance of Oil to this day!!

Project-Based Learning in the Preschool

The Pre-K class is studying “buildings,” a project-based curriculum which guides us through in-depth studies of real life topics. Our ultimate goal is being able to build a city in our classroom. Our resources vary greatly; we use beloved books such as the Three Little Pigs, real life observations, we draw blueprints, have guest speakers come in, use real tools such as screw drivers to take apart things, and much, much more. Through our studies we are turning one of our two rooms into a timeline of our progress. We really enjoy this project and always look forward to a new, exciting day.

– Morah Marcy and Morah Rachel

School News

Thank You!Dr. Bor together with Mandy Barish want to express our appreciation to Sonny Davis and Princeton Sports for the generous gift of seven Bicycles to our Pre-School. It gives our children the opportunity to be active as they delight in riding bikes as part of their recreational activities.

Our children love outdoor physical activities and on nice days, we plan to close the front of the preschool to allow riding time. Please see the photo to witness for yourself the joy you have provided the children.

We sincerely thank you for your generosity and continued consideration of the children of Beth El.
