Henry Ford once said Anyone who stops learning isold, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keepslearning stays young . The most important thing in ourlife is to keep our mind young. Lifelong learning is Wikipedias defines. It could beFormal and informal. 4. *Informal learning is one of three forms of learning defined by theOECD. The other two are formal and non-formal learning. Informallearning occurs in a variety of places, such as at home, work, andthrough daily interactions. For many learners this includes languageacquisition, cultural norms and manners.In the context of corporate training and education, the term informallearning is widely used to describe the many forms of learning thattakes place independently from books, self-studyprograms, performance support materials and systems. 5. * OECD OECDThere are five key features of the lifelong learning approach, as conceived bythe OECD. First, it offers a systemic view of learning, since it examines thedemand for, and the supply of, learning opportunities, as part of a connectedsystem covering the whole lifecycle and comprising all forms of formal andinformal learning. Secondly, it emphasises the centrality of the learner andthe need for initiatives that cater for the diversity of learner needs. 6. *To fully understand informal learning it is useful to definethe terms "formal" and "non-formal" education. Merriamand others (2007), state: "The term non-formal has beenused most often to describe organized learning outside ofthe formal education system. These offerings tend to beshort-term, voluntary, and have few if any prerequisites.However they typically have a curriculum and often afacilitator" (p. 30). Non-formal learning can also includelearning in the formal arena when concepts are adapted tothe unique needs of individual students (Burlin, 2009). 7. *Lifelong learning is the development ofhuman potential through a continuouslysupportive process which stimulates andempowers individuals to acquire all theknowledge, values, skills, andunderstanding they will require throughouttheir lifetimes and to apply them withconfidence, creativity and enjoyment in allroles, circumstances, and environments 8. We live in the knowledge age, which means thatthe ability to apply the right knowledgeeffectively is an important skill and thecornerstone of our success. If you ever doubtthe strength of knowledge and learning, just asksomeone who hasnt used a computer in tenyears to find an article on the Internet. 9. Learning makes us more interesting. Knowledge enables adifferent perspective, fascinating conversation and a deeperunderstanding. It makes us a better people, allows us to makebetter, informed decisions, and assists us in becoming moresuccessful in our careers. 10. Today with less definedchanges in life roles there isneed for new strategies tomotivate lifelong learning.Age 0-5 yearsIn this age group, a lot of learning takesplace, providing a foundation for future learninghabits. This is probably the age group where thegreatest amount of informal learning occurs, aschildren imitate almost everything from parents, peersand their environment. Learning in this stage affectsthe development of all other learning abilities later inlife. 11. *Learning in the 6 24 age group primarily takes place ineducational institutions,from primary and secondaryto tertiary levels. Family life, social organizations andreligious institutions can also play a role in non-formal and informal learning during this time. The objective oflearning in this period is the holisticdevelopment of learners infour aspects, namely: physical, intellectual, socialcapacity, emotionaland mental development. 12. *Individuals in the 25 60 agegroup can learn informallyduring their working livesthrough the use ofinstructional media, mostlyfrom their occupations, work-places, colleagues, touring, mass media, informationtechnologies, environment andnature. Adults learn fromexperiences and problemsolving. They therefore needcontinuous development ofintellect, capability andintegrity 13. The challenge of seekingnew knowledge and teachingthemselves may result in asense of pride of accomplishmentand help maintain self-esteem. 14. *Lets step back amoment and lookat the context weall find ourselvesin and thechallenges weface. 15.
