The 2015 Estrella Community Survey will begin June 15 and end on June 30. This survey

is used to measure the work of the CCMC Management team, the Board of Directors and the volunteer committees.

The survey has changed this year because of resident feedback from past years and the questions are now going to be measured on a scale of 1-5 with options ranging from “very satisfied” to “very dissatisfied”.  The questions touch on various categories of operations in the community and allow for additional comments on each.

Our goal with the survey is to gain information on how residents feel about:

• What is it that Estrella excels at and makes it great?

• Where can Estrella see the most improvement?

• What opportunities could make Estrella a better place for you to live?

• What influences could be a positive or possibly a detriment to our community?

This resident survey helps us to make necessary improvement in the overall management and daily operations of Estrella. The feedback that is received from residents is used to make decisions on changes that are needed and establish resources to initiate those recommendations that are feasible and warranted.

Residents that have provided input on the survey in the past were influential in the installation of such amenity updates and upgrades as the pickleball courts and South Park Shade Structure. Your input and recommendations and concerns are paramount to the ultimate resident satisfaction that we hope to achieve.

You can either fill out the survey online or stop by Starpointe Residents Club and the HOA Office for a printed copy to fill out. By filling out the survey, your name will be entered to win one of two $100 Visa Gift Cards.

We thank everyone in advance for your participation and time to take this survey.

As one of four vibrant volunteer committees, the Communications Committee works diligently to identify and to make available information

of interest to our residents in a timely way. In today’s technology-centric world, we find ourselves face-to-face with the most communicative society ever. Therefore, it is important that we provide a variety of communication vehicles to the community.

The scope of this committee is laid out in our charter, but what it translates to is identifying a relevant and supportable set of information channels to keep our residents well-informed about social events, community management, group and club activities, common community issues, budget and financial status as well as a host of many other topics.

The Committee meets monthly, but as the committee’s vision and creativity grows, we often times will meet more often to address current items. The actions of the volunteers encompass more than meeting attendance. Two very skilled photographers, Dave Finley and Tony Pignone, provide Estrella imagery that is adored by all every month. Each photo truly is worth a 1000 words. The expertise of these two retired, professional photographers assures we have high quality images. The artistic writing talent of Barbara Bailey, a published author and writer, assists the committee with her flair for writing and proofreading. Monica Londy, mother of two girls, keeps many of our article and photo ideas in the 21st century with her youth and enthusiasm. Kim Aponte, Vice Chairperson, brings managerial details to the committee. Kim has walked us through many flowcharts making sure we have not forgotten the smallest detail. Barbara Ertl, Chairperson, brings many years of ECA Board experience to the committee.

The committee submits magazine articles and reports on items of interest to our residents. The committee also proofreads materials for every issue to deliver content that is as comprehensive and accurate as possible.

Responding to and planning for long-range improvements in community communications is something we are committed to. We want communications to be informative, enjoyable and easy. With that in mind, we have formed an ad hoc group of skilled community residents to assist in the

development of an improved website. Along these same lines, we are pursuing ideas to expand our magazine and have more articles about the clubs, groups and events that are important to our residents.

Throughout this process, we work closely with CCMC Communications Coordinator, Shirley Robertson, to bring you high quality and easily accessible communications. Under Shirley’s direction are: topics, photos, articles, layout of the magazine, and continued relationships with the City of Goodyear, the Liberty School system and Estrella businesses. Shirley says, “I am not sure how I was appointed such a great group of residents to assist with the communications for Estrella. Each month we seem to get even more creative than the previous. The committee photo (shown above) touches on our creativity. I am truly blessed to have six diamonds assisting me.”

Listening to suggestions from our community, we strive to put your feedback into motion. We look forward to continually adapting to match the media methods that our residents use to stay informed about life in Estrella and will continue to pursue a malleable information infrastructure that conforms to the technology and information needs in our community. This is a fun, energetic committee that loves what it does.

P.S. If you would like to assist the Communications Committee with improving our community website, please contact Shirley as soon as possible. The planning stages have already begun and we would love to have you bring your ideas to the table.

Erin Stewart, Estrella’s Compliance Coordinator, doubles as both a CCMC

employee and an Estrella resident. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Erin traded in her rain jacket and snow boots to raise her family in the beautiful desert oasis

of Estrella. The main draw to move stemmed from the desire to enjoy the outdoor living and watch her kids grow up in a safe, family-oriented community. It’s a family affair for Erin, as both her parents and grandmother call Estrella home as well. The best part of being a resident and employee (in her words) are the ability to work and play in less than a five mile radius. She feels personally invested in maintaining the aesthetics of the community and helping to protect property values in the area. Erin began her career with CCMC back in 2011, and since then has enjoyed working in the PreSchooners

Club, Youth Club, Starpointe Front Desk and the Community Services Front Desk. She has served as the Communications Coordinator, Facilities Administrative Assistant and finally now as Estrella’s Compliance Coordinator. Erin is no stranger to hard work and is thoroughly appreciative of her job and the friendships she has with her co-workers.Erin, her husband Mike and three children all love being active and enjoying the wonderful amenities on the mountain. When not in the office, you can find Erin watching her kids participate year-round in Estrella youth sports, swimming in the waterpark at Starpointe, hiking and mountain biking the trails within the community, and most importantly, cheering on the Cincinnati Reds at spring training games down the hill. Erin is excited for the opportunities ahead and to see what is in store for Estrella as it grows. Next time you see her in the community, wave hello or stop and say hi!

breaking Ground on presidio Submitted by Newland Communities

We are excited to announce Estrella’s second residents club, The Presidio, is expected to break ground this month in the community

of Montecito. In preparation for this highly anticipated new community addition we conducted extensive research to better understand what amenities are most important to our residents and today’s homebuyer. We are confident that the result will be a residents club designed to help meet the needs of our growing master-planned community.

Plans are still in the process of being finalized but the following is a list of anticipated features. Construction will take approximately 13 months after initial ground breaking begins.

Designed in the rustic, Mediterranean character of Andalusian architecture, the building incorporates heavy timber detailing on exterior roof eaves and interior ceilings as well as the use of traditional stucco, stone and brick building materials. The interior matches this style with handmade tile flooring, decorative wall tile accents, wood paneled ‘old world’ doors and wood paneled wall accents. The décor will be rooted in a neutral color pallet with blue, mustard and caramel accents.

At approximately 18,500 square-feet, the Presidio will include:

• Sustainable features • Energy efficient heating and cooling systems• Walls constructed with high performance building

materials comprised of structural insulated panels and insulated concrete forms

• 3,400 square-foot fitness facility and separate rooms for instructor-led classes

• Men’s and Women’s locker rooms• Social space/great room with fireplace offering

multiple seating areas providing an atmosphere for cozy gatherings

• Teen area with a private courtyard• Large teaching/demo kitchen• Boardroom with multi-functioning furniture, TV,

stereo and sound system• A café that will offer coffee/pastries in the morning

and transform into a beer/wine bar later in the day • A robust offering of outdoor amenities including: • 650 square-foot patio, with misters, overlooking

the pool area and surrounding mountain views, offering access to the café

• Large event lawn• BBQ area• Outdoor living space with a fireplace and

comfortable seating • Pool with a beach entry • Splash pad/kid’s area• Shade structures• Pool building with covered loggia and outdoor

shower and restroomsWe are very excited to move forward on Presidio and will keep residents updated on the building progress and anticipated grand opening as more information becomes available. Square footage is approximate. Amenities and features are based upon current development concepts and timeframes, which are subject to change without notice. No guarantee is made that the features depicted will be built, or, if built, will be as depicted. 2015 © Estrella. LANDSCAPE>>>snippets

Estrella Landscaping Update & Lawn TipsBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

Some of the landscaping activities you have seen (or will be seeing in the common areas at Estrella) include fertilizing and aerating the turf

areas following our established schedules.

For the past few years, we have been following a plan to install new plants and granite in certain areas throughout the community. The granite installation should be just about completed for this year with new material along the north side of Estrella Parkway from the StarTower to the Cotton Lane/Estrella Parkway roundabout. More granite was also installed finishing up San Miguel, and starting to move south on Golf Club Drive and Westar. The spring planting project included the installation of additional plants on the interior of neighborhoods, focusing on the older communities first and will include all or a portion of the following communities: Copper Ridge, Avalon Del Lago, Cordero, Parkside, Lakeview, Legends, Arroyo Vista and Desert Breeze. Lastly, the palm tree trimming is scheduled for next month, so this will be a very productive and busy summer season.

June is a good time to be working on your bermuda

lawn. Keeping your lawn green may be a challenge when it is so hot outside. By taking some important steps now to encourage the growth of your lawn, you will be able to keep it green while using only the amount of water necessary to keep it that way. If you have not done so already, aerating the lawn is a great way to loosen up the soil to allow oxygen, nutrients and water to penetrate our compacted soils.

Keep a close eye on your heat-sensitive plants at this time of year. High temperatures and low humidity will affect some plants. A good way to help the plants survive is to apply a layer of mulch around the plants to help keep the root zone cool. This is good for roses and some trees that struggle during this time of year.

Make sure you are getting enough water to your landscape without overwatering. Remember to check the soil around your trees and shrubs as your guide to how frequently you should be irrigating. You can also get some great information on the internet by searching the keywords “water use.” You will find some great tips on conserving water in the search results.

Thank you for keeping Estrella green and gorgeous!

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the USA, especially among boomers. Almost all new

communities will or have been putting in pickleball courts. To accommodate this growing trend, Estrella has added four new pickleball courts to its community amenities.  The Estrella Pickleball Club also keeps growing with over 80 permanent and seasonal members and continues to grow. The club encourages the community to come out and join the fun. Free lessons are provided. Interested? What a quirky title! What a marvelous read! Join us as we discuss Jean Brashear’s novel at Starpointe Residents Club, Wednesday,

June 10 at 10:00 a.m. Call Nina Adair with questions: 623-810-3494. An excerpt:

Nothing else could have put me on the road again, not after eighteen years on the run. The road was Mama’s perpetual escape clause for boyfriends, bill collectors or just boredom.

Sister, she used the road to save me.

All those years of running, I swore up and down that once I was old enough, I would find a spot and no force on earth would budge me.

But I didn’t count on Sister.

Sister gave up everything for me, see, and I owed her.  She was only sixteen when Mama died; I was eight.  Life could have been so much easier on her if she’d let the social services

people have me like they wanted.  Instead, she even chased off her no-good daddy Alvin when he showed up saying he would take care of us. She understood lighting-quick that what he really meant to do was lay on his sorry behind.  Only get up long enough to take the child welfare money and buy lottery tickets. Sure as shooting, he would have let Sister do all the work.

But Sister turned those spooky eyes on him, I can still see him shrinking from them.

From her, from her mojo.  She had it, even at sixteen.

Once she was gone, I lost everything I knew of home. Ten months went by before that fateful July day, endless hours and weeks when no matter what I tried, I could not get comfortable in my skin.  The hole in my heart was just too big to paste any more patches over.  If only I could see her…maybe the world would make sense again.

The Goddess of Green Okra by Jean brashearSubmitted by Estrella Book Club

The Estrella Mountain Car Club (EMCC) was established over a decade ago to come together as a group of automobile enthusiasts

to share knowledge, enjoy friendship and promote this passion in our community.

Our Mission is to promote a love and enthusiasm for any kind of custom, classic, street rod, antique or special interest vehicle while engaging in non-profit fundraising activities, road trips, cruise-ins, car shows and club meetings.

We meet every second Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Starpointe Residents Club. All car enthusiasts are invited to join us as a guest or join us as a member. We also have a private car showing near Safeway on W. Elliot Road across the street from Starpointe every fourth Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. We generally have a cruise for lunch after the show. Due to the extreme heat in Arizona our meetings and car shows are not held in July and August.

We also have more gatherings of car shows at The Burger Joint down the hill by the QT gas station. EMCC is happy to have The Burger Joint as a sponsor for this event. It will be held monthly every

third Sunday from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. except for July and August.

One recent honor for our club was to participate in a wedding held at Starpointe on March 21, 2015.  Several of our members escorted the wedding party where each member rode in a different classic car.  This was a real treat for us and something that the bride and groom will remember forever.  Making a positive impact on the members of our community and promoting our car club is core to our mission.

You can email us at [email protected] and club information is also posted on www.LifeInEstrella.com community website and magazine.

CITY

Years from now, when the Estrella Falls Regional Mall is completed and residents

are enjoying all that it has to offer, we can say it all began at the movies.

It has been exciting times for the city of Goodyear as we recently had a flurry of groundbreakings and grand openings for a number of amenities that residents have been asking for: restaurants, entertainment and a new pump track for avid bicyclists at Foothills Community Park.

On Saturday, April 25, with a star-studded line-up of businessmen and developers, we broke ground on the 16-screen, 78,000-square-foot Harkins Theater. Harkins Theatres President and CEO Dan Harkins, who addressed the crowd, proclaimed his 34th theater will be like no other movie theater in the world, a Cine Capri-style theater that will feature “Ultimate Lounge” seats that recline and a gourmet concession stand that will include buffalo chicken strips, pizzas, churros and White Castle cheeseburgers.

The Harkins groundbreaking along McDowell Road between Bullard Avenue and PebbleCreek Parkway, marked the beginning of the long-awaited Estrella Falls Regional Mall project and took place before an enthusiastic crowd of more than 1,000 people. The theater, which will create 150 jobs, is slated to open in the spring of 2016.

The day before the Harkins groundbreaking, city leaders and members of our economic development team were on hand for the groundbreaking of Chicago-based Michael Lewis Co. – an airline supplies distributor. The company is planning to build a 300,000-square-foot distribution warehouse that will serve the southwestern United States, Latin America and parts of Asia.

Like Harkins Theatres, Michael Lewis is a family-owned business and company managers said they had considered a number of places for their new facility, but favored Goodyear as the best place to do business. Their facility will be located along 143rd Avenue south of Van Buren Street, and will employ as

many as 120 people at this location.

Shortly after these exciting events, Seattle-based outdoor retailer REI announced it will open a 400,000-square-foot distribution center in Goodyear – creating more than 100 new jobs and becoming the third tenant along the newly-opened Loop 303.

To say I am excited about these new developments is an understatement. And it is not by accident, either. City officials have planned for this growth and continue to recruit new companies to Goodyear. Ultimately, if we can bring more daytime jobs here to Goodyear, the entertainment will follow.

Goodyear residents: we are gearing up for growth – and welcome it with open arms!

bureau Seeking Workers for Goodyear Special CensusSubmitted by City of Goodyear

The City of Goodyear is seeking applicants to fill 200 part-time jobs for the U.S. Census Bureau as it conducts a Special Census to determine

how much the city’s population has grown over the last five years.

Goodyear is among several Valley cities participating in a mid-decade Special Census that will begin with a knock on the door of residents’ homes in October. Prior to seeing census workers in your neighborhood requesting basic information, the candidates will have completed testing in August and training in September. The city began accepting applications for the census enumerators and crew leader jobs last week.

“We want to make sure we have enough people to conduct the survey in an accurate and timely manner so there are no delays,” said Goodyear Long Range Planner Joe Schmitz, who is helping to oversee the Special Census. “We encourage eligible residents to apply because we would like to hire people to survey the neighborhood where they live. When this process begins, we would hope that residents will cooperate so we get a full and complete count.”

Schmitz said the city receives money from state-shared revenue which is divided amongst all cities according to their population. This allocation currently

is based on population figures from the 2010 census at which time Goodyear had 65,275 residents. Based on the number of new dwelling units constructed since 2010, the city now estimates the population to be closer to 77,000. As a result of this increase, the city could see its annual revenue increase by as much as $1.5 million. Goodyear currently receives slightly more than $16 million in state-shared revenue annually. The money goes into the general fund to provide services such as police, fire and recreation.

“We want to make sure we have enough people to conduct the survey in an accurate and timely manner so there are no delays,” Schmitz said. “We encourage eligible residents to apply because we would like to hire people to survey the neighborhood where they live. When this process begins, we would hope that residents will cooperate so we get a full and complete count.”

Residents interested in working for the Census Bureau must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, a car available to drive and able to work during the day, evening and on weekends. The hourly pay for the census positions are $16.25 an hour for enumerators and $17.75 an hour for crew leaders. To apply, visit online: www.goodyearaz.gov/jobs and click on the census worker link.

City of Goodyear reviews Utility rate ScheduleSubmitted by City of Goodyear

As water continues to become a valuable and more fragile resource throughout Arizona and the Southwest, the Goodyear Water Planning

Committee is reviewing a proposed utility rate plan to help cover increasing costs and infrastructure upgrades.

Consultant Dan Jackson of Dallas-based Economists.com recommended during the committee’s meeting on May 12 the city implement a five-year rate plan for water and wastewater fees that could see an annual increase from 2016 to 2020.

The proposed rate plan will ensure the city can meet the minimum levels of service for its growing customer

base in the event of an interruption of service, a drought or an emergency. It would address how the city would pay for $38.9 million in water projects and $18.4 million in wastewater treatment plant upgrades within a five-year capital improvement plan (CIP). The CIP currently calls for the replacement of three water production wells, the rehabilitation of three others, and possibly the construction of three strategically-placed new ones that would have the capacity to pump two million gallons a day.

The committee and city staff will ultimately present the proposed plan to City Council on June 15. A public hearing on the plan will be held two days later.

SCHOOL BELL

Miss Monica Long has been the music teacher at Estrella Mountain for two years. In that time, she has used her magic to create a

love for music and rhythm with students as she collaborates with staff members on campus.

As part of a grant application to receive ukuleles for the classroom, Long invited members from the Aloha Festival Committee to teach 5th and 6th graders world dances and songs related to the music of the ukulele. After weekly music sessions over a two month period, students were invited to attend and perform at the Aloha Festival. In the grand finale, students performed for their parents and staff. Board members from the Aloha Festival Committee were also in attendance. Impressed with the performance, the Aloha Festival Committee donated 32 ukuleles to the school, as the grant Long applied for had not been approved. Parents danced with the students at the end of the performance. What a wonderful sight!

Long has also orchestrated monthly grade level performances to showcase talents of all her students. She worked throughout the school year with the 3rd-8th grade students, as well as the high school students, to put on a musical. The musical was performed at the high school and had a great showing.

During the holidays, Miss Long puts together a “Caroling, Cookies, and Cocoa” performance, which is an outdoor performance. Students travel around the campus and sing carols to different groups of parents. She ends the night by bringing all the students together for a fun flash mob.

Miss Long works with all the grade level teachers to integrate their unit curriculum into music class. This creates a love for learning as the students make connections to the curriculum through music and movement. She creates so many smiles with the students, staff and parents. Thank you, Miss Long!

GET EDUCATED & GET INVOLVED WITH THE GOODYEAR PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT:police and fire stations, located in Estrella, work directly with community members to ensure that residents feel safe and educated. The City created the Community Services Unit to educate, build relationships and create direct lines of communication with the residents of Estrella and Goodyear. The unit hosts various events and programs and maintains an active presence within schools and neighborhoods.

The programs provided by the Community Services Unit allow residents to become more involved and speak directly with the men and women in charge of our protection. Coffee with a Cop (frequently hosted at Oasis Bagels), Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods (GAIN) events and the Community Block Watch program, to name a few, facilitate learning opportunities with direct access to police officers and public safety officials.

For a full list of programs and events offered by the City of Goodyear Public Safety Department please visit www.goodyearaz.com. Interested in getting more involved? Call Community Service Officer, James Nottingham, at 623-606-4044 for information on how to join or start a Community Block Watch program.

Summer is here, school is out and the kids are home looking for things to do. Summer vacation is the perfect time for both parents and children to brush up on safety tips and learn more about the resources we have within the community. The City of Goodyear

JUST BEYOND ESTRELLA:Temperatures are on the rise in the Valley and while Estrella is home to a wide variety of amenities to help residents stay cool, a trip north is always a great change of pace. Northern Arizona offers a ton of summer fun with a host of weekend destinations to help beat the heat. Information on a few weekend getaways is listed below:

Sedona: The city of Sedona is nestled among red rocks in a geological wonderland. Multi-hued stone formations jut upward from the high desert floor creating a vivid setting that changes hourly with the light. When USA Today compiled their Most Beautiful Places in America list, Sedona claimed the top spot. From amazing tours through the canyon to the quaint little town providing a bevy of wonderful restaurants, galleries and shops, there is something to capture the attention of visitors of all ages.

A list of activities, events, restaurants and other points of interest are available at www.visitsedona.com.

Flagstaff: Located in the high country mountains, Flagstaff is not the Arizona that Valley residents are accustomed to. At 7,000 feet elevation, temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees and the forested landscape and scenery is a refreshing change

from the desert. Flagstaff offers a diverse range of activities, and while suited for the outdoor enthusiasts, the city is full of things to keep you busy both inside and out.

Extend your weekend getaway with the next destination on the list, the Grand Canyon; Flagstaff is only 80 miles from the Grand Canyon and close to seven other national parks and monuments. For more information on things to do in Flagstaff and nearby destinations please visit www.flagstaffarizona.org.

The Grand Canyon National Park: There is a reason Arizona is named the Grand Canyon State. As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Canyon’s sheer size and beauty is awe-inspiring, and the perfect destination for a family weekend or a romantic getaway. The Grand Canyon can be experienced at four general destinations: the South Rim, Grand Canyon West, Grand Canyon East and the North Rim.

For more information on events, tours and hotels, please visit www.grandcanyon.com.

To learn more about these and many additional Arizona destinations, please visit www.visitarizona.com and plan your summer escape.
