Attitude is everything—think as if, act as if, be as if. Powerful words to strengthen us from the annual onslaught of images featuring large, smiling families gathering together around lavishly set tables with perfectly prepared food. Holiday celebrations are more often than not very different for those of us serving our country away from family, parents, or children.
Most assignments take Airmen to different states or countries. Feeling isolated over the holidays is an emotion commonly shared by single and married Airmen or families. Yet, expanding our definition of home and family can ease loneliness when feeling disconnected. As Wingmen, each of us is a member of the Hurlburt family; we look out for each other and intervene in times of stress.
Overcoming stressors and life’s challenges is what resiliency is all about. The Hurlburt Airman and Family Readiness Center offers a variety of support for everyone regardless of a person’s relationship status. It’s comforting to know A&FRC has tremendous resources in times of need or assistance and trained people to help.
Despite separations from home, this season of giving thanks is ideal for taking charge of our stress through our attitudes. Having a positive mindset results in a positive attitude and can bring positive change in your life.
My favorite holiday stress reliever is humor. A decade ago I discovered “Martha Stewart Will Not be Dining with us this Thanksgiving*.” As an OCD hostess preoccupied with perfection instead of
friends and family, the editorial was liberating. Through tears of laughter, my need to create the perfect holiday setting was tempered with a strong dose of reality.
A few years ago Thanksgiving dinner went to a dimension never before seen at my home—traditional fare served on Chinet™ instead of English bone china. After dinner entertainment included a game played with Red Solo cups and small white balls. Arguably being that casual was extreme, but it did much to ease tension in my newly blended family.
Our family gatherings have since balanced out somewhere between the two extremes. But these days my family is much relieved since I relaxed my expectations and attitude about creating an idyllic, yet mythological Thanksgiving.
If your favorite thing to make for Thanksgiving is reservations, be sure to call the Soundside Club for their annual deluxe buffet. Another option is the Reef Dining Facility for active duty or retired military wanting to share the day with their Air Commando family.
Whether this season of Thanksgiving brings friends and family to your table, sends you traveling, or provides an opportunity for calm, my wish for all of us is to remember the many blessings we commonly share: liberty, freedom, and the honor of being Americans.
*myhurlburt.com/marthastewartthanksgiving.phpYou can’t appreciate home till you’ve left it, money till
it’s spent, your wife till she’s joined a woman’s club, nor Old Glory till you see it hanging on a broomstick on the
shanty of a consul in a foreign town. —O.Henry

There can be little doubt in any Air Commando that mission capability and readiness go hand-in-hand with quality of life; and when married, their family’s well-being tops the list of “must-haves.” From the time an Airman arrives on base until their last day here, A&FRC has one goal in mind: to make your stay at Hurlburt Field positive, meaningful, and successful. The A&FRC provides ALL Commandos--single or married, first termers or seasoned leaders, a wide range of programs aimed at enhancing operational readiness and promoting a healthy family environment. We invite you to check out the center’s various programs and classes; or if you prefer, make a one-on-one appointment with one of our Community Readiness Consultants (CRCs).
Balancing Personal & Work Life (P&WL): Resiliency is our inner voice telling us we can adapt to change and gives us the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; it’s our toughness. Skill building workshops that focus on milestones and hurdles throughout one’s life span are a key part of the P&WL program. We offer classes and individual appointments to aid in: personal growth, relationship concerns, boundaries, parenting, communication, and many others. Most favorite are the “Team Building” and quarterly Heart Link (Air Force 101) for spouses! A&FRC works closely with many on and off base agencies to improve the quality of life for our Hurlburt community.
Discovery Center: No internet access? Just moved and do not have your computer? Need a copy or two? Need information on the area and other resources? The Discovery Center provides all these services--we even have a coin counting machine!
Emergency Financial Assistance: An emergency interest-free loan from the Air Force Aid Society may be the answer in your time of unforeseen need. Schedule an appointment with a CRC for a qualification review.
Employment Assistance: Options for employment can be overwhelming or confusing. Federal job search? Resume writing? Spouse employment? Searching for the career best suited for you? Where to look for employment? A&FRC can answer these and other questions, plus provide information about the local job market or map out an Individualized Career Plan.
Exceptional Family Member Program/Special Needs (EFMP): Airmen with a special needs family member may not know where to turn for information or referral options. A&FRC can assist with program information, points of contact, and possible support venues.
Financial Readiness: We offer individualized appointments and classes to: make a budget, handle out of control debt, talk about options for filing taxes, review credit reports, discuss identity theft, buying a home and how to invest.
Individual & Family Readiness: Being at the tip of the spear means deployments at a moment’s notice. Stress when separated from home can be eased when people are prepared with readiness information and resources. Assistance is at the ready for Airmen and families facing a remote assignment or deployments. The popular “Hearts Apart” Program provides an outlet for spouses and dependents coping with their loved one’s absence. Weekly reintegration briefings smooth transitioning between deployments and returning home. Session topics may include: stress related to returning home and family life, personal changes and approaches to deal with change, interpersonal communication, parenting issues, and adjustment strategies for singles. No matter the deployment phase, pre-departure, sustainment, or reunion A&FRC is here to provide relief.
Children & Youth Resources: Parenting in the 21st century can be challenging—an understatement; but coupling contemporary child rearing with a military lifestyle is a realm unto itself! A&FRC offers many options for playgroups and support groups no matter your child’s age or stage. A complete calendar can be viewed at www.myhurlburt.com.
Relocation Assistance: Arriving or departing the base, A&FRC can help with a smooth transition: Newcomer’s Orientation, Loan Closet (temporary household necessities), Welcome Spouse Program: that includes a bus tour of Hurlburt, base and local area information, community resources, and “Smooth Move” with information on other bases. When PCSing in or out, you may be eligible for free child care – call for details!

Military Child Education/School Liaison Officer (SLO): The average military family moves 9 times over a 20 year career. With each move military children face many school-related challenges. The goal of the SLO is to coordinate and assist school age children of military parents with educational opportunities and information necessary to succeed in an academic environment.
Transition Assistance: Through Transition GPS (goals, plans and success) workshop, separating or retiring members receive mandatory briefings such as Pre-Separation and VA Benefits. Retirees may attend 2 years prior to separation and those separating may attend 1 year from separation (must complete NLT 90 days from separation date - no orders needed). A&FRC also provides a wide range of optional classes to help map your future outside the military.
Volunteer Resource Program (VRP): A big part of military culture is the spirit of giving back. The VRP offers information about on base and off base volunteer agencies and events through a monthly opportunities newsletter. Okaloosa Mentor Program Volunteer Training: Training to become an
Okaloosa School District mentor. At this 30 minute training, the Okaloosa District screens, orients, trains and matches volunteer mentors with youth.
Wounded Warrior Program: This program assists military members who received combat related injuries, and their families, with services and support. We also offer extended transition services and 5 year case management. A Peer-to-Peer Caregiver Forum for Wounded Warrior Caregiver support group meets weekly at A&FRC.
Air Force Casualty Programs (AFCP): The AFCP’s primary goals are to: provide prompt reporting; dignified and humane notification; and efficient, thorough, and compassionate assistance to the Next-of-Kin (NOK) at all times. The Casualty Assistance Officer assists leadership and NOK when an active duty member is seriously injured, ill, or deceased. Additionally, assistance is provided to an active duty member in the event of a family emergency involving their spouse or children. Assistance is provided to the retiree NOK when they are deceased.
For information on any of this programs contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 884-5441 or by visiting myhurlburt.com and
navigating to the Airman & Family Readiness Center page.

Nope, it’s not a misprint—TRAYLS is one of the most unforgettable, real life experiences you and your family will undertake as a team. TRAYLS is an acronym for Training Resilient Adults and Youth in Leadership Skills. Participants of TRAYLS come away with a genuine sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that they have the resources to tackle deployments together. Challenge your family with elements that will create a lasting impact and strengthen your family bond.
TRAYLS is a “Challenge by Choice” weekend adventure aimed at families impacted by deployment. The Hurlburt unique program is free of charge to all interested participants. TRAYLS families “glamp” in cabins at rural Camp Timpoochee located on the outskirts of Niceville, Florida. A Friday evening ice-breaker and cafeteria style dinner start off the
adventure. After introductions, short youth and adult break-out sessions, and a camp fire complete the first day.
Over the course of the next day and a half, youth and adults are facilitated through skills to successfully navigate a deployment. Airmen and Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) Community Readiness Consultant, Angela Sanclemente, says TRAYLS is, “a great opportunity for families to reconnect and work together toward better understanding of the deployment process.” At times as individuals, other times as groups, participants experientially learn about deployment cycle phases: Pre-Deployment, Deployment, Sustainment, Re-Deployment, and Post Deployment. Families go through a series of mini adventures designed to give them skills to constructively move through times of separation that can be carried on at home before, during, and after a deployment.
Situated on a tucked away, remote edge of Choctawhatchee Bay, Camp Timpoochee is an inviting and tranquil outdoor environment. TRAYLS activities are designed to enhance a family’s appreciation for one another by expanding resiliency skills. Outcomes of the
weekend often offer a renewed commitment to family excellence, a capacity to inspire others, and a desire to make a difference. TRAYLS outdoor mini-adventure activities provide valuable tools to experience deployments in a new and emotionally supportive way.

Check out the Youth Program video on YouTube and see what Hurlburt families have to share about their weekend TRAYLS adventure: MyHurlburt.com
More than great rhetoric, creating an environment for Airmen and their families to thrive is the mission of the 1st Special Operations Force Support Squadron. We understand the ways Air Commandos give of themselves every day at home and away, and how much their families sacrifice to support their loved one’s mission. Improving resiliency for our families as well as our Airmen is crucial and is a driving force behind programs like TRAYLS.
How does your family get involved in TRAYLS? The adventure camp is open to families with youth 6 – 18 years of age. For families with additional children under the age of 6, childcare is provided on site, at no cost, during scheduled adult activities. TRAYLS expands the insight school aged children, pre-teens, or teens have about their parent’s deployment experience with the ultimate goal of building resilient families.
Hurlburt Field’s Airman and Family Services Flight offer a variety of valuable resiliency and family support resources. There are so many programs that it can be confusing to try to figure out what programs are out there and where to start. Master Sergeant Larry Cleveland, Jr. and his family attended one of the first TRAYLS adventures, “I can’t say enough about this program and how it will help our youth
and children understand what we go through (in a deployment) and what THEY (families) go through. If you get a chance to be a part of the TRAYLS program, you want to take advantage of that.”
Meals and lodging will be provided. You may add anything that will help you feel more comfortable during this camping experience.
For families with children, the Youth Center is a great place to take advantage of all that is available. Call 884-6355 today for information
about upcoming TRAYLS adventure fun; you’ll be glad you did.
TRAYLSGoing Places You Dare Not Go Alone
“I strongly believe TRAYLS gives military families an opportunity to reconnect and establish a strong
bond with each while also educating Both youth and adults on the deployment process.”
- Alvin Koposko

Bowling is so much more than just a game. It’s a traditional American past-time that puts rank and work aside to allow Airmen and their families to come together. As an inside sport, it is also the perfect all-weather, year-round sport.
Bowl Your Best Game
Whether you’re in one of our competitive leagues or you stop by for an afternoon with the kids, it’s always nice to know you’re on top of your game. Here are a few ways to improve your bowling skills and get that Turkey (triple strike)!
Pick the right bowling ball. The average ball is 14lbs for men and 13lbs for women. If it doesn’t feel comfortable, it’s not the right ball!
Pay attention to posture. Start upright and bring the ball forward with your first step then backwards with your second.
Choose comfortable shoes. Clean, dry and well-fitting shoes can prevent you from accidentally slipping.
Focus on ball placement. Keep the ball out to the right the entire time instead of in front of your body.
Take a class. Like any other sport, your bowling skill improves with practice. Taking a class from a coach can help you improve your arm, posture, and all-around game.
Have fun with it. The most important part of bowling is to enjoy yourself.

lightly dust with ground cumin. Remove from grill, cut each fillet
into thirds and keep warm. Place flour tortillas on grill for a few
moments per side to warm. Arrange warm tortillas on flat sur-
face, placing one third of each fillet in the middle of the tortillas.
Divide the pico de gallo, shredded lettuce and shredded cheese
equally onto each tortilla. Gently fold each tortilla and place three
completed tacos on plate. Serve while hot.
Step 1: Dark Roux (for thickening)1 cup Vegetable oil1 cup All-purpose flour
Method: In a thick bottom pot or skillet, heat oil to almost smoking over medium high heat. Add flour a third at a time, whisking constantly to prevent scorching. Continue to stir until mixture turns dark brown and has the aroma of peanuts. Remove from heat, stir occasionally until cooled. Set aside. NOTE: Roux can be prepared in advance.

Using a long lighter, ignite Jack Daniels. (NOTE: lighting the liquor will produce a spectacular flame and will remove the alcohol content). Add red wine and allow to simmer until wine evaporates. Add onion, celery and pepper and cook over medium heat until vegetables soften. Add chicken stock, tomatoes and seasonings. Simmer and stir for 20 minutes over medium heat. While stirring, add dark roux a little at a time un-til mixture thickens. Add chopped chicken meat, cooked shrimp and the reserved liquid. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
