BIRMINGHAM HAS A RICH INDUSTRIAL BACKGROUND AND WAS KNOWN FOR BEING A CITY WITH A HIGHLY SKILLED WORK FORCE. BY BUILDING THIS IDENTITY BACK UP AN ECONOMIC FUTURE CAN BE SECURED. THE ARRIVAL OF HS2 WILL BE USED AS A PLATFORM TO BOOST THE VIEW OF BIRMINGHAM THE CITY OF A THOUSAND TRADES.

COLLEGES, ENGINEERS AND INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURES. EACH UNIVERSITY WILL HAVE
ACCESS TO BOOKABLE LABS AND STUDIO SPACE ENCOURAGING A INTERNATIONAL
AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY WAY OF LEARNING. ALONGSIDE THE EDUCATIONAL HUB THERE WILL
BE FACILITIES FOR NEW START UP COMPANIES TO DEVELOP AROUND LARGER ESTABLISHED
FIRMS.

THE SITE IS LOCATED WITHIN LAND CURRENTLY OCCUPIED BY THE NEC ON THE URBAN FRINGE OF BIRMINGHAM. THIS AREA OF BIRMINGHAM WILL BECOME A CENTRAL HUB FOR UK WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF A HS2 STATION ALONG SIDE EXISTING TRANSPORT LINKS, BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, THE LOCAL TRAIN LINE AND WILL BE ACCESSIBLE TO THE MOTORWAY NETWORK VIA THE M42. THIS NEW URBAN DEVELOPMENT WILL BRING TOGETHER EDUCATION AND MANUFACTURING/FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES TO CREATE AN ORCHARD CITY PROVIDING 1000 WORKSHOPS, 1000 OFFICES, 5000 JOBS AND 1000 NEW HOMES.

THESE BARRIERS COULD BE THOUGH OF AS THRESHOLD, MARKING THE TRANSITION FROM THE URBAN FRINGE OF THE CITY INTO THE RURAL VALLEY LANDSCAPE AND THE LAND BETWEEN BEING ALMOST LIMBO, SHOWING ELEMENT OF BOTH OR NEITHER, AN ARRIVAL SPACE/THRESHOLD/FOYER.
BELOW ARE A SERIES OF INITIAL SKETCH PLANS EXPLORING THE IDEA OF ARRIVAL OUTSIDE OF THE CITY WALL
INITIAL MASTERPLAN SKETCH CONCEPT, THE IDEA OF THE M42 ACTING AS A WALL AND THE WAY PEO-PLE WOULD MOVE ACROSS THIS BARRIER. THE IDEA OF THE CITY WALL DEVELOPED INTO A LARGE SHELTER BELT WITH ROUTES THROUGH INTO THE TECHNOLOGY DISTRICT AND OUT INTO THE VAL-LEY.

EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITY OF PERMITTING THROUGH THE WALL INTO THE CITY, COULD BE ONE ROUTE OR ONE THOUSAND
DEVELOPMENT THE CONCEPT OF THE WALL WAS REDEFINED AS BEING THE INTERACT BETWEEN THE URBAN FRINGE AND THE VALLEY LANDSCAPE, THE TYPOLOGY WAS USED TO DEFINE THE NEW CITY WALL / EDGE

THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW FOREST TO MARK THE ARRIVAL INTO BIRMINGHAM, A MARKER WHICH CAN BE SEEN FROM THE MOTORWAY, THE AIR AND TRAIN. ALSO BEGGING TO THINK ABOUT THE WAY IN WHICH A NEW URBAN DEVELOPMENT COULD BE HOUSED WITHIN THE FOREST, MASS PLANTING OF WOODLANDS WITH SECTIONS THINNED OR REMOVED TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT.
1.5000 (TO SCALE AT A1) SKETCH PLAN WITH THE BEGINNINGS OF A STRUCTURE, THE URBAN EDGE DEFINED, THINK ABOUT WOODLANDS FILTERING THROUGH THE SITE, WETLANDS AND A RESERVOIR. THE CONCEPT OF THE WALL WORKING WITH THE TYPOLOGY INFORMED THE STRUCTURE.

SPATIAL PRINCIPLES AFTER A LOOSE STRUCTURE WAS DECIDED SPATIAL PRINCIPLES WERE APPLIED TO DEFINE THE URBAN FORM. CIRCUITS BOARDS WERE SPATIALLY ANALYSED TO SEE HOW INFORMATION TRAVELS, THE PRINCIPLES DISCOVERED WERE DRONE AND PULSE. LONG LINEAR DRONES OF INFORMATION INTERRUPTED BY A PULSE OF ACTIVITY OR INTERRUPTIONS. THE PRINCIPLES WERE APPLIED TO THE SITE AT A SCALE OF 1.500 AND REFINED TO FORM THE FINAL MASTER PLAN.
THE SPATIAL PRINCIPLES WERE APPLIED TO THE SITE TO CREATE A STRUCTURE WHICH INCORPORATED THE CONCEPT OF BRING ELEMENTS OF THE VALLEY IN TO THE DEVELOPMENT. THE PLAN WAS THEN REFINED TO FORM A SKETCH MASTERPLAN
