Level 2 : Award in Counselling Concepts (ABC Awards) 

 About this course: This Award is a 10 week course introducing basic counselling theory and skills to those who have had little or no previous experience or training in listening and responding skills.  It is appropriate for beginners to counselling, learners wishing to endorse their counselling skills with a recognised qualification, as the first step towards becoming a professional counsellor or for those just wishing to improve their self‐confidence and communication skills. The course is an effective start to self‐discovery and personal development as it involves experiential learning and self‐awareness exercises.  You will not be qualified to work as a counsellor at the end of the course but it is a valuable introduction to communication skills which are transferable to a range of career and educational opportunities.  You need to be able to commit to the 80% attendance requirement on this course. At the start of the course you will be given a student handbook which sets out in detail all the information you need to successfully complete your qualification   

Aims: This course aims to enhance your verbal and written communication skills and to introduce you to the theory of listening and responding in a helping relationship   

Objectives ‐ this qualification will help you to: 

develop a basic understanding of what counselling is about and be able to compare and contrast counselling with other forms of helping activities 

develop an understanding of what counselling training entails and assist you to make a more informed choice as to whether or not you are suited to undertake vocational counselling training as opposed to other types of training 

introduce you to experiential learning processes that will include a high element of personal growth work, developing further self‐confidence and self‐esteem 

prepare you to progress onto appropriate further qualifications

 Structure and Content of the Qualification:  

The Professional Context of Counselling This unit provides a basic introduction to counselling. You will develop an understanding of what counselling is, and an appreciation that qualified counsellors and those who use counselling skills abide by an ethical framework. You will learn about the importance of creating the correct environment and the right ethos for the helping relationship to be successful.  

Communication skills in helping relationships In this unit, you will explore effective communication skills used in helping relationships. You will demonstrate a range of listening and responding skills to establish and develop close interactions with others.  

 

An introduction to personal development In this unit, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your personal development and identify areas for development in the future. 

  Assessment:   

Your work is measured against specific criteria set out by ABC Awards 

Individual tutor written and verbal feedback  

Internal and external assessment/moderation of written work 

All three units must be passed to successfully achieve the qualification.   We are always happy to give you any necessary assistance and guidance with course work and writing presentation.
