Anne L. Morris, writer/editor, & library staffers Chris Andrews, Jim Gilbert,

‘Wellness, Fitness, and Sports:’ Summer reading programs As many of us know firsthand, the
lazy days of summer can quickly
turn into weeks of endless boredom.
Add some literary elements and
activities that promote fitness of the
mind and/or body, however, and
you may find that you and your sum-
mer develop in unexpected ways!
* For kids (toddlers–rising fifth
graders), we have “On Your Mark,
Get Set, Read!” with a calendar that
began in June with a kickball kickoff
(yes, you read that right!) event and
ends with a grand finale in mid-
August.
* For tweens and teens (rising
sixth graders–12th graders), we have
“Get in the Game: Read.” Those in
this group can take part in any activ-
ity available to “On Your Mark, Get
Set, Read!” participants plus enjoy a
special gamers’ night designed just
for them.
* Even very solemn adults in three
-piece suits often revert to being
kids in the summer! Under the ban-
ner of “Exercise Your Mind. Read!”
we are again running our summer
reading program
for “Really Big
Kids.” (You know
who you are!)
Special events
planned for July
and August include a program on
active sports injury prevention, an
introduction to the Japanese martial
art of aikido, and a crazy Olympics.
Please note that while all of our
programs are free, registration is
necessary in order to take part in
any of our groups. Registration and
reading login began on June 7 and
will end in August. (Each group has
its own end date; see page 4.)
For more information, please
check our calendars and our web-
site (http://www.whitehallpl.org),
call the library at 610/432-4339, and/or pay us a visit at
3700 Mechanicsville
Rd., Whitehall. Still
have questions? Call
Lorraine Santaliz,
youth services librarian, or Patty
Vahey, library director. Let us be a part of your terrific summer!
Your kids have been playing
library bingo here for years, most
recently in June. Now we’re offering
Adult Library Bingo!
The games begin at 6 p.m. on
Thursday, July 21! Join us for big fun
and small prizes!
Are you a rising
sixth–12th grader?
Then you’re invited
to come to the li-
brary for a night of
games, planned just
for you, on Friday, July 8, 5-7:30 p.m.
(TAB members, bring your friends!)
Board games? Yes. Video games?
Yes! (If you have games for the Wii,
please consider bringing them to
share.) We’ll provide some munch-
ies, and you’re welcome to add to
the snack pile as well. See you then!
From 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 1,
through 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 16,
fines will be forgiven for newly
returned but overdue library materi-
als. (Charges incurred previously
will still apply.)
Donating canned food items for
our food drive on behalf of the
Whitehall Food Pantry will net you a
$1-per-can reduction of your fines.
Take advantage of this — it’s a
one-time offer!
WTPL will be closed on Monday, July 4, in ob-
servance of Independence Day. Also referred to
as the Fourth of July, the day celebrates the unani-
mous decision by the Second Continental Con-
gress to adopt the Declaration of Independence.
Because the day’s festivities often include firework
displays, we urge you to use caution. (Need info
on where fireworks can be used legally and some
firework handling tips? Check out http://www.
cpsc.gov/)
Let’s go to the movies!
Please join us at the Whitehall Town-
ship Public Library at 6 p.m. on
Tuesday, July 19, and/or Tuesday,
August 16, for Family
Movie Night! We’ll be
enjoying “Zootopia,” a
PG-rated film, in July, and
“Space Jam,” also PG-
rated, in August. Young
attendees are invited to wear their
PJs and bring along their pillows,
blankets, and teddy bears.

Tai chi, created in China as a martial art, is
primarily used in this country as a means of
promoting health and wellness. Composed
of slow, graceful postures done mindfully,
tai chi — also known as “moving medita-
tion” — is said to develop balance, relieve
stress and anxiety, and improve
one’s mood and quality of life.
This introductory program will
include instruction and practice
in meditation and selected tai chi
postures. Join instructor Anne Morris on Tuesday, July 5, at either 1:30 p.m. (ages 8
years–adult) or 6:30 p.m. (ages 12 years–
adult).
Whether you’re young or old, athletic or
out-of-shape, the modern Japanese martial
art of aikido (sometimes translated as “the
way of harmonious spirit”) can increase
your confidence, improve your focus, and
get you into shape. Join David Nemeroff,
head instructor of Aikido Masters Self
Defense Academy, at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
July 12, to learn more. Open to everyone!
