Math Number writing tray - Fill

a shallow tray with sand.

Optionally, add some gold

glitter, gold coins, craft

gems, etc. Children can

use their fingers or

“treasure” to write num-

bers. Use printable number

cards as prompts.

Counting treasure - Add

the correct number of

gold coins or craft gems to

each numbered treasure

chest.

Shape matching -

Match shape flags to the

appropriate pirate ships.

Roll and find treasure -

Roll the printable number

cube or a die. Find that

many pieces of treasure in

a sensory bin.

Pirate dice game - Can

be played individually or

with a partner. Use a die or

the included number cu-

be. If there are two play-

ers, each player chooses a

different color crayon.

Player 1 rolls and colors in

the appropriate spot. Then

player 2 gets a turn. Once

the board is filled up, the

player with the most wins.

Can also be played with

the color version of the

game - simply laminate it

and use game markers

instead of crayons.

Pirates

LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION

Science Pirate sink or float -

Gather small pirate toys,

gold coins, jewels and a

bin of water. Predict which

will sink and which will

float. Test each item and

record observations.

Sink the pirate ship - Use

a toy boat, plastic bowl or

other container as a pirate

ship. Give kids a variety of

materials and challenge

them to come up with a

way to sink the pirate ship.

“Exploding” treasure

chests - Explore chemical

reactions with treasure-

filled pirate chests.

Build and race ships -

Make pirate ships out of

the materials of your

choice (like tin foil or

corks). Race the ships in

gutters or similar long tubes

set on an incline.

Gold coin slime - Make

gold-colored slime. After

it’s made, add gold coins

and pirate “treasure” to

the slime.

Literacy Pirate words - Brainstorm

a list of words that start like

pirate. When finished, say

a word (some that do and

some that don't begin

with /p/). Kids say

aaarrgghh like pirates if

the word starts with /p/.

Beginning sound match

- Match the pirate ships to

the correct island based

on the beginning sounds

of each picture.

Gold coin ABC hunt -

Write letters on gold coins

(directly or with a sticker).

Hide coins in various plac-

es. Kids can be pirates

hunting for the coins.

Pirate map - Draw a pi-

rate treasure map. Label

each part of the map.

Gold coin name bin -

Use a favorite sensory filler.

Add gold coins with letters

written on them. Have kids

find the appropriate coins

needed to make their

names. (TF)

Other Design a ship - Use a

large (or small) cardboard

box to create a pretend

play pirate ship. This could

be a week long project

that you continue to add

details to and play in/with.

Sunken treasure bottles -

Make treasure into pirate

sensory bottles.

Make a spyglass - Use

cardboard tubes, plastic

cups and paint to make a

pirate spyglass.

Walk the plank sensory

bin - Add blue water

beads to a bin. Place a

long block across the bin

and have pirate toys “walk

the plank”.

Design and build a

treasure chest - Design

and build a treasure chest

out of recycled materials.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on

their own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken

Math

Treasure Patterns - Use plastic

gold coins and craft gems to

create different patterns.

Pirates’ Gold Number Making -

Paint 20 rocks gold. When

dried, add numbers to the

rocks from 0 to 9, ensuring

each number is on two rocks.

Challenge children to make

double digit numbers using the

rocks.

Literacy

Pirate Letter Puzzles - Match

uppercase and lowercase let-

ters.

Rhyming Pirates - Match up

printable cards based on

rhyming words.

Science

Water Droplets - How many

drops of water can fit on the

top of a coin? Use a pipette to

add a drop of water at a time

to the coin. Count how many

it takes until the water over-

flows.

Make a Penny Turn Green -

Explore various chemical reac-

tions with pirate “treasure”.

Sensory

Gold Play Dough - Make gold-

en play dough for pirates to

plunder for treasure.

Pirate Buried Treasure - Add

treasure and pirate toys to a

sand-filled bin.

Block Play

Walk the Plank - Set up a pi-

rate plank using large wooden

blocks. See how well you can

walk the plank.

Build a Ship - Use blocks to

build a ship to play pretend in.

Arts and Crafts

Simple Pirate Ship Craft - Use

craft sticks and construction

paper to make a pirate ship.

Use tape, stickers, etc. to dec-

orate the ship.

Coin Rubbings - Use plastic

gold coins, real coins, and un-

wrapped crayons.

Pirate Letter Matching Puzzles Print letter cards. Cut in half diagonally, from the top-right corner to the bottom-left corner (so uppercase and lowercase are separate). Laminate for durability. Children match the uppercase to lowercase letters, like a puzzle.
