PLANNING
Danielson's first domain, planning, is the stage during which teachers prepare for instruction. This is where we typically think of 'lesson plan' as just about all aspects of instruction are included here. For example, the planning domain includes:
∑ Identification of instructional outcomes, standards, goals and objectives
∑ Instructional materials and methods
∑ Learning activities
∑ Learning groups
∑ Formative assessment
∑ Structure of lesson or unit
MEALS
CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
Danielson stresses the importance of classroom environment for academic success. Setting student behavioral and academic expectations, management of time and students, safety and teacher/student interactions are all aspects that need to be addressed and planned for in the Danielson format. For example, you may have your desks arranged in clusters on a daily basis, but teach a lesson in which it is more beneficial for students to be sitting in groups of two.
For this part of the Danielson plan, teachers zoom into the areas of creating an environment that fosters respect. Teachers also work to establish a learning culture in which students feel safe. They make plans for classroom procedures, such as how to get a new pencil, and how to manage student behavior.
MEALS
INSTRUCTION
The Danielson framework gives teachers a chance to be intentional with their instructional designs. To be thorough, Danielson guides teachers to plan ways to communicate clearly to students. Teachers are also encouraged to use questioning techniques and rich discussions to engage students in high-level learning.
Throughout learning, teachers should plan for and use formative assessment techniques to determine student understanding. Using this and other information, teachers should be flexible and responsive to student needs, going off plan if necessary, for students to comprehend.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Finally, Danielson's framework stresses the importance of being responsible in our practice. Like all professions, taking time to reflect on teaching, asking questions and allowing a chance to grow and change when necessary. Teachers need to keep accurate records, like grade books and attendance, and be stellar communicators with families, other staff and administrators.
Professional responsibilities can also include being active members of professional communities, like book clubs, and taking opportunities to grow and develop professionally by attending seminars, taking classes, and keeping a close eye on current educational research.
