Microclimates

• Microclimate refers to the climate or temperature differences within a small area e.g. over a few meters

Today we can measure:

1. Wind Speed2. Wind Direction3. Temperature4. Cloud Cover

How would you measure

these to get accurate,

detailed readings?

What is the most efficient way to work collaboratively?

• Photographer ?• Someone to measure temperature? • Someone to measure wind speed?• Someone to measure wind direction?• Cloud cover ?• Data recorder ?• Explanations/ Location notes?

What comments could you

write about in the final

row?

What factors might effect

the microcimate data?

Example Methodology for Wind Speed1. Select a suitable location and find the wind direction by holding a wind vane in

the air above your head. 2. Hold an anemometer above your head for several seconds, pointing into the

wind.3. Record the wind speed shown on the screen in a table.4. Repeat this test three times and find the mean.5. Repeat steps 1-4 at different locations around the area to find the mean wind

speed at a place.

Why I did this? The wind speed is measured at head height to avoid disturbances caused by obstructions such as the ground or walls. These obstructions would likely slow the wind speed down. As the wind can change suddenly it is important to hold the anemometer for several seconds before recording the speed. Several readings are taken in order to be accurate when finding the mean speed. If we want to find the mean speed in an area, different locations have to be chosen at a range of altitudes and positions (open and enclosed). This will then give a fair indication of the mean wind speed in a given area. What is missing from this answer?....Why the anemometer is pointed into the wind!
