FÉLIX STÜSSIOriginaire de la vallée de Glaris en Suisse, Félix Stüssi habite Montréal depuis 1998. D’abord autodidacte, Félix a étudié auprès d’Irène Schweizer, Markus Bischof, Chris-toph Baumann, Vince Benedetti, Art Lande et Fred Hersch. En 1996, il remporte les premiersprix (soliste et ensemble) du Festival de Jazz de Zollikon en Suisse. L’année suivante, il décroche une maîtrise en ethnomusicologie de l’Université de Zürich. En 2005, le Félix Stüssi quintette entame une tournée de cinq concerts en Suisse. En juillet 2007, le groupe Félix Stüssi & Give Me Five gagne le presti-gieux Grand Prix de Jazz General Motors au Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Les deux premiers albums du groupe, "Give Me Five" (Unit Records, 2007) et "Baiji" (JustinTime Records / EMI, 2008) ont été reçus avec enthousiasme des deux côtés de l’Atlantique. Le troisième album, "Hieronymus" (Effendi Records 2010) a été nominé pour un Juno Award ainsi qu’unPrix Opus. Félix démarre ensuite un tout nouveau projet "Les Malcommodes" (Effendi Records 2012) avec deux piliers du jazz canadien:. le batteur Pierre Tanguay aussi à l'aise dans la musique improvisée, contemporaine ou médié-vale et aux collaborations innombrables (Fred Frith, Nana Vasconcelos, Henry Grimes...) . le contrebassiste Daniel Lessard, également pianiste et compositeur. FÉLIX STÜSSIFélix Stüssi grew up in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland and has lived in Montréal, Cana-da, since 1998. Self-taught on jazz piano, he has later studied with some big names: Irène Schweizer, Markus Bischof, Christoph Bau-mann, Vince Benedetti, Art Lande, and Fred Hersch. In 1996 he won two awards, best band and best soloist, at the Zollikon Jazz Festi-val in Switzerland. A year later, he graduated from the University of Zürich with a masters in ethnomusicology. In 2005, he toured Switzer-land with his Canadian quintet, giving a con-cert at Moods jazz club in Zürich. Félix Stüssi & Give Me Five won the prestigious Grand Prix de Jazz GM at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 2007. The first two recordings of the quintet, "Give Me Five" (Outside Music/Unit Records, 2007) and "Baiji" (Justin Time Records/EMI, 2008), were very well received on both sides of the Atlantic. The third album, "Hieronymus" (Effendi Records 2010), was nominated for a Juno as well as aPrix Opus. Au Québec le terme « malcommode » revêt le sens de « tapageur » ou « espiègle », sou-vent utilisé avec une connotation positive, par exemple en blaguant avec des enfants. LES MALCOMMODES honorent leur nom avec une musique hautement dynamique, sensible, fraîche, spontanée, imprévisible, originale et pleine d’humour contagieux. En respectant cet esprit, l’album entier a été enregistré en direct, sans amplification, murets de séparation ou casques d’écoute. LES MALCOMMODES : "Les Malcommodes" Il n’y aurait guère que des québécois pour se trouver un nom pareil ? Oui, ce disque a été enregistré à Montréal. Aux commandes de ce trio de bourrus, le pianiste suisse (Eh oui !) Félix Stüssi dont on devine la finesse et l’humour dans un jeu de piano qui évoque Thelonious Monk dans les phrasés acrobatiques ou Horace Silver (belle version de "Peace" en conclusion). Mais cette musique naît indiscutablement d’une envie de "jouer collectif". Chacun impose sa voix, se positionne au niveau des deux autres mais personne ne cherche à prendre le dessus. Après trois disques mettant des souffleurs en vedette, le pianiste helvète immigré au Québec Félix Stüssi propose cette fois-ci un trio collectif avec ses fieffés complices, le vétéran Daniel Lessard à la contrebasse et le polyvalent batteur Pierre Tanguay. Dans cette généreuse surface de plus de 74 minutes (un peu longuette), le groupe s’attaque à 11 pièces, toutes sauf deux signées par le pianiste, les autres par Monk (Four in One) et Horace Silver (Peace). Extraites de trois séances en 2010 et 2011, dont une publique, les pièces permettront à l’auditeur d’apprécier la belle chimie entre les musiciens rehaussée d’une certaine variété stylistique, recoupant la ballade, le swing vigoureux et quelques numéros aux formes plus ouvertes. En dépit de son nom, ce trio n’a rien de particulièrement dérangeant, ou « malcommode » si l’on veut. La tradition du piano trio jazz se porte bien merci et ces messieurs contribuent à son état de santé. Marc Chénard
