six voix, dont les deux voix extrêmes sont doublées de façon caractéristique ;

Souverain, mariages, baptêmes, convalescences, victoires militaires, etc.),

Page 11: Les Arts Florissants Dir. William Christie

l'Eurovision.

Page 12: Les Arts Florissants Dir. William Christie

T T are three of the most masterly sacred works by the great-

1 i v l v est master of sacred music in seventeenth-century France.

Charpentier composed the Litanies à 6 voix et 2 dessus de violes (H.83) in the

mid-1680s, for the private chapel of the wealthy and pious Marie de Lorraine

{known as Mademoiselle de Guise). He probably wrote the mighty Te Deum

in D major (H.146), which dates from the early 1690s, for the great Jesuit

church of St Paul in rue St Antoine, when he was maître de musique there. And

the Assumpta est Maria Mass (H.ll) is a work of his ripest maturity, composed

probably in 1699, when he was director of the music at the Sainte-Chapelle

du Palais.

Charpentier's full title for the Mass - Assumpta est Maria: Missa sex vocibus cum

simphonia - emphasizes its six-part chorus (unique among his Masses) and its

orchestral complement (flutes, strings, and organ); it might also have men-

tioned the vocal soloists, no fewer than eight, which appear alone or in various

small combinations. Clearly, Charpentier composed the Mass for a special

occasion. Not only does he set the five normal Ordinary items - Kyrie, Gloria,

Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei - but he adds a setting of Psalm 19, verse 10

('Domine salvum fac regem'), a prayer for the health of the king which was the

usual musical conclusion of Masses in the chapelle royale. He even intended to

complete the composition with a motet de sortie' (but he left blank the manu-

script page on which we find that heading). Given the title of the Mass, it

was perhaps composed for the feast of the Assumption (August 15). However,

the planned 'motet de sortie' implies a grand recessional, and Charpentier

may have been writing for the 'Messe rouge that opened the annual meeting

of the Parlement (its nickname referring to the scarlet robes of the Parle-

ment members) ; in fact, the Mercure Galant of November 1699 remarked that

pentier'. [The opening day of the Parlement was Thursday 12th. The ceremony

started with a Solemn Mass accompanied by excellent music... by Marc-Antoine

Charpentier]. In any case, Assumpta est Maria is a work of stately nobility and

solemn gravity - and above all, of serene musical mastery.

The Litanies de la Vierge à 6 voix et 2 dessus de violes is the most impressive,

evocative, and carefully worked of Charpentiers nine settings of the Litanies

of Notre-Dame de Lorette, that lengthy enumeration of the mystical attributes

of the Virgin, each followed by a prayer for her intercession and all flanked by

an opening Kyrie and a closing Agnus Dei. The work was composed for twelve

musicians of Mademoiselle de Guise's establishment: eight singers (among

them Charpentier himself, an haute-contre) plus two treble viols and, for

the continuo, a harpsichord and a bass viol. The singers appear together as a

pseudo six-part chorus, with a characteristic doubling of the two outermost

parts; often the six parts are divided into two three-part groups, high voices

vs. low ones, with an enchanting chiaroscuro-like result. Alternating with this

'chorus' is a multi-colored variety of solo ensembles, especially trios (three

sopranos; two sopranos and bass; haute-contre, tenor, and bass) and duos

(different pairs of sopranos). Thus the work has an extraordinary range of

musical colors - all in the service of the most intense projection of textual

nuances and the most sensitive and intimate emotional expression.

TE DEUMH146

Under the Ancien Regime in France, the singing of the Te Deum fulfilled

an important political function. Ordained by royal decree to celebrate great

events directly linked to the king's family and to the well-being of the realm

{such as the sovereign's coronation and birthday, marriages, baptisms, recovery

after illness, or military victories), the Te Deum was in effect a state motet

whose purpose was to 'rally the notables to the royal cause and . . . strengthen

the national consensus' (Jean-Christophe Petitfils). A range of evidence tends

to suggest that the royalist interpretation of this hymn of St Ambrose and

St Augustine was widespread at the time. For instance, a subversive parody,

Ludovico Magno, regi Francorum, te Deum, written during the Dutch Wars,

begins as follows: 'We praise thee, O King. We acknowledge thee to be the

Most Great. Thee, the Master of the Gauls [French], all the earth doth admire.

To thee all subjects, the kingdom and all the universe, the clergy, the court,

the people, do cry out with one voice: Great, Great, Great, he who is loved of

the celestial hosts.' If this transposition of meaning is eloquent enough, one

may also point to a possible parallel between the message of the hymn and the

heraldic symbolism of the armorial bearings of France: while the Te Deum was

sung in every parish in the realm, the Bourbon coat of arms adorned public

places, and even the altarpieces of certain churches! Here was a subtle propa-

ganda exercise carried out at the instigation of Louis XIV himself, mingling

the literary and pictural images of his own glory. No composer moving in

court circles could be unaware of the fact: Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who

worked at different times for the Dauphin, Mademoiselle de Guise, and

the Duke of Chartres, must certainly have known of this tacit rule aimed at

promoting the greater glory of the God-King Louis.

Of the four extant settings of the Te Deum by Charpentier, the most cele-

brated is unquestionably the one in D major, HI46, thanks to the television

Page 17: Les Arts Florissants Dir. William Christie

producers who chose its prelude as the theme music for Eurovision in the

early 1950s. This decision, improbable enough on the face of it (they should

logically have opted for an excerpt from Vivaldi's already ultra-famous Four

Seasons), can doubtless be traced back to the publication in 1943 of an edition

by Guy Lambert and its recording in 1953 by Louis Martini conducting the

Chorale des Jeunesses Musicales de France and the Orchestre de chambre des

Concerts Pasdeloup.

Although Charpentier was born in Paris and his Parisian career is fairly well

documented, we know almost nothing of the genesis and first performances of

his Te Deum in D major. Its composition seems to date from the early 1690s.

It may perhaps have been written to accompany the celebrations commemor-

ating the military victory of Steinkirk (3 August 1692) at which the Duke of

Luxembourg crushed King William III of England. It may also be surmised

that Charpentier's score was commissioned by the Jesuits of the church of St

Louis, for whom he had been working since 1687: the autograph manuscript

mentions the name of the bass Pierre Beaupuy, who before singing for the

Jesuits had served as musicien ordinaire at the Hotel de Guise, where he made

our composer's acquaintance.

The Te Deum in D major, a 'joyous and very warlike' key according to the

composer, is Charpentier's only setting to call for trumpets and kettledrums,

as does its counterpart by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The (all too) famous Prelude

en rondeaux is followed by a mosaic of more or less contrasting musical

sections grouped into eight movements, in which eight soloists and four-part

chorus engage in pleasant dialogue, in order to give the literary text its fullest

expression. To return to the political exploitation of the hymn, it is worth

noting that the word 'Patrem' (is this the Pater divinitatis or the Pater patria})

is underlined by the chorus, while the words 'omnis terra veneratur', uttered

unanimously, are prolonged by a conjunct descent of the orchestra, as if all

the earth were bowing down before the Most High and/or the Most Christian

Page 18: Les Arts Florissants Dir. William Christie

Sovereign. In contrast with these brilliant sections, to which we should add

the 'Judex crederis', Charpentier contrives some very fine passages of suppli-

cation, delicate and introverted, such as the magnificent 'Te ergo quassumus'

in E minor and the trio 'Fiat misericordia tua.

In short, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, as a man of the theatre and a deeply

committed Christian, appropriates the hymn of thanksgiving to transform

it into an extremely diversified miniature drama, by turns dazzling, joyous

and tender.

Charpentier

in zwei dreistimmige Gruppen, in hohe und tiefe Stimmen, aufgeteilt, was

men Ausdruck zu vetleihen.

chen, Hochzeiten, Taufen, Genesungen, militätische Siege etc.).

Page 23: Les Arts Florissants Dir. William Christie

Page 24: Les Arts Florissants Dir. William Christie

Terzett "Fiat misericotdia tua".
