NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

As a show, Legally Blonde is better than it has any right to be. Es-sentially the long form cute version of a (casually sexist?) joke, it should be, at best, nothing more than a candy coated trifle. But… it isn’t. The music is great, the jokes are funny, and the relationships feel real. Moreover, it would have been so easy to just let the show be about a woman who learns to believe in herself. Which is a valuable lesson to be sure… although, if we’re honest, it’s one that has been addressed in practically every other play, movie, or mu-sical with a female lead ever made. Instead, we’re presented with a nuanced story about a confident and capable woman who never spends a second worried about what she “can” do, because she can do anything, Legally Blonde treats that as an assumption, an under-lying fact on which the rest of the story is built. The real focus of this play is upon Elle’s realization of the “scope” of her opportunity. That there are many ways to be happy, apart from the first one that presented itself.

That’s a lesson that I want my daughter to take to heart; I don’t want her to ever fret over whether or not she “can” or “may” do some-thing… I would much rather she simply be confronted by the brutal and unforgiving existential dilemma that inevitably arises from too much choice, like standing in the cereal aisle at the supermarket.

Anyway… I hope you enjoy the show.
