Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Leesburg Downtowner – your source for all you need to know about the great places to shop, drink and dine in the up and coming downtown area of Leesburg. Those of you who love Leesburg, like I do, know it’s one of the best-kept secrets around. We have an incredible Main Street stretch of quaint shops, great dining, unique gift emporiums, and much more. It’s time to let the rest of the world know about our private little paradise, but the big question is how?As a small business owner, I’ve been challenged to promote my businesses in a cost-effective way. It’s not easy to compete with large companies with equally large advertising budgets. I know my product – and those of my fellow Downtowner merchants – is superior to the “big guys” in every way. How could I let you, the buying public, know the great experiences awaiting you on Main Street and its surrounds?Well, that’s how the Leesburg Downtowner was born.

As a Leesburg Downtowner reader, you’ll get a quick, easy to read, edition sent directly to your email box once every month. You’ll learn about promotions by your Leesburg Downtowner merchants, upcoming events and much more. In coming issues, we’ll also focus on one of the great shops or restaurants in our area. The business owner may share a little bit about his or her background, style tips, a great recipe, home décor strategies or any other insider information that will keep you on the cutting edge in the areas of lifestyle, fashion, health and home.

Again, welcome, we are glad you are part of the Leesburg Downtowner family. Please feel free to forward this issue to any friends or family members you think would appreciate the contents. Or, encourage them to subscribe to the Leesburg Downtowner themselves by emailing [email protected].

Until Next Time,Benjamin Moseley

What is “Shabby -Chic” The term “shabby-chic” was first used in the late eighties by fashion designer Rachel Ashwell. The term encompasses the decor you might expect to find in a tastefully decorated country cabin.

Many shabby-chic/cottage style themes center around the use of shades of white. This is invariably combined with soft dreamy floral-patterns, wonderful pastel blues, greens, creamy peach, and delicate pinks. The concept uses many different types of vintage items such as old furniture ( white “ distressed” finish is popular) , wrought iron curtain rods with flimsy sheer curtains (perhaps dyed with tea), luxuriant pillows abound, and of course, plenty of fresh

cut flowers.Shabby Chic/ Cottage Style is not rigidly defined, but is achieved through an elegant balance of the old and worn, shiny silver accessories, soft snugly furniture and plenty of pillows, vintage glass pieces certainly add to the overall effect.

One could also expect to find rough, old lace and comfortable throw rugs....simple luxury and charm can be seen in abundance.

Our goal here at Ruffles and Raspberries , is to bring you a wealth of quality items to best help you achieve this wonderful style. Our inventory is frequently changing, so check back often.

Fine Arts — including music, theater, drawing, painting, or sculpture — whether in practice or theory, has been a part of any well-rounded curriculum for decades — but that may be changing. Many schools today are cutting back or eliminating their art programs due to budget constraints. It is estimated that by the end of this year, more than 25% of public high schools will have completely dismantled them. These stats aren’t just bad news for teachers working in the arts, such as those at traditional schools for dance or online colleges for photography. Numerous studies done over the past decade have demonstrated the amazing benefits of such an integral education facet. Students who don’t have access to art classes may not only miss out on a key creative outlet, but might also face greater difficulty mastering core subjects, higher dropout rates and more disciplinary problems.

You don’t have to take our word for it — you can read the studies yourself. Our Mission is . . .to promote growth and vitality to the community by providing educational opportunities in the arts for all ages, providing cultural events for the community and providing a central location which attracts talented artists, artisans, musicians and appreciative audiences.
