Brothers, received an email today and MW J. Dick Martinez has had surgery last week and isnow at home resting. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. MW John Kavanaugh isnot doing well and is on life support. He had rebounded and was talking and nearly ready to go homewhen he took a turn for the worse yesterday. He is in Florida Hospital in Sebring and they have in-

serted a ventilator. His blood pressure was very low and they were trying to raise and stabilize this before hecould be sedated as he is very restless with all the tubes. His daughter Gari is here from Georgia and she islooking after Ms. Miki who is very confused and somewhat disoriented. Please keep M\W\ Kavanaugh and hisfamily in your thoughts and prayers. These two men have led our Fraternity at its highest level and given us

their all to make it as good as they possibly could. Please keep them in your thoughts.

June has been a very busy month. We ( the Lodge ) have a new brother, James Michael Tho-mas was initiated Monday the 17th, and will start his catechism soon. Working on bids for In-

surance for the Lodge, ice machine, and of course the air conditioner replacement. The ice ma-chine is to be installed Tuesday 25 June and the air conditioner to be installed 1 July. The airconditioner will take a few days to install. The Master's fund raising lunch. Some facts:60Brothers contributed $2446.00. 50 sent in just the 6 tickets no donation. Several Brothers sent

back their tickets with donations ranging from $10.00 to $50.00 plus. We served 185 meals anda profit of $1700.00. Again many thanks Brothers for the donations, and especially to thekitchen, and dinning room crew for their hard work. Every week from January until our lastcommunication the officers had been practicing for work in ritual from the opening and closingin January and February to the conferring the Entered Apprentice degree on Monday the 17thof June. Many, many thanks go to those who made every practice session a must on their busy

calendars. The Entered Apprentice Degree work showed the work. The "line" will start practicesessions again on the 9th of July. We will be doing work in the Fellow Craft Degree. Any andall Brothers are welcome to come and join us on our practice sessions. Until our Stated Com-munication on 2nd of July, enjoy the birth of our country, stay safe, and God Bless All.

Your Masonic RingHow should you wear your Masonic ring?

With points of the legs of the compasses facing to-wards you or with the legs facing away from you? Thisis one of the most frequently asked questions directedto the Masonic Service Association of North America.Their response is that it may be worn either way. Thetwo points of the compasses may point to the Brotherto remind him of his obligation or the two points of thecompasses may point toward others to show an out-ward sign of the wearers authenticity as a Master Ma-son.

Respectfully, there are those who think other-wise. The author of an article I recently read on theMasonic Lodge of Instruction web site states the trueMasonic ring is a signet ring that is used as a seal to

validate the authenticity of the wearer. Signet comesfrom the word sign, meaning the ring provides asymbol, a sign, or signature to officially stamp or marka document. According to the article, we are unsure theexact date Masonic rings began to be worn by the Fra-ternity, but signet rings have been a part of many cul-tures throughout history. Kings, Popes, Roman Emper-ors, and others have worn signet rings as a sign of theirnobility, importance, and power. Probably the mostfamous signet ring in the world in use today is worn bythe Pope. Therefore, a signet ring distinguishes an indi-vidual as one of high social standinga privileged

person. In other words they provide a plumb line ofauthenticity proving that the wearer was not onlytruly who he said he was, but symbolized his power inthe community.

As time passed, tradesmen and merchants toobegan wearing these rings. Their signet had mottoes orlogos cut into them. Like most other signet rings, a trueMasonic signet ring has become unnecessary. Most ofour documents today rarely include a waxen seal. Whotoday would want to spend time cleaning their ringafter putting it facedown into hot was to make a seal? This leads us back to the question of how should onewear the ring. When the emblem of the Square andCompass is displayed on a building or a button, univer-sal custom requires that the legs of the compasses pointdownward. When displayed on the altar, they pointaway from the Master. While you may wear your ringwith the emblem facing you to help you rememberyour obligation, your Masonic signet ring is histori-cally an outward showing to others denoting your sealof authenticity as a Master Mason. The emblem

should therefore face away from you, both legsof the compasses pointing downward.

W Hank DeBerryMy Brothers All, I have the unpleasantduty to send out delinquent dues notices

this month and it hurts me to do this. To date I have43 Brothers who have not paid their dues for 2013. Ihad no choice but to send out the delinquent dues

notices per Masonic Digest Art. X Sect. 20. Everymember of a Lodge who is six months or more in

arrears for dues shall be notified by the Secre-

tary, and in case of failure or refusal to come for-

ward and pay his dues, or give satisfactory ex-

cuse, within three months after such notification,

may be suspended at the discretion of the Lodge. This is a harsh fact of life Brothers, that unfortu-nately the Lodge and your Secretary has to live by. Ihave no wish to see any Brother go NPD simply be-cause of an oversight by him. If this is not the rea-

son for your delinquency and we have done some-thing to slight you or otherwise make you wish toleave Masonry then Please tell us what we havedone or was done to you so that it can be corrected. No Brother should be left behind or ignored and aslong as I am the Secretary of this Lodge, I intend tostrive to keep that rule.

I am very pleased to announce the Initiationof Brother James Michael Thomas into Freema-sonry. Brother Thomas was brought into our Lodgeon June 17th by Brother Bob Lovall. Thank you Bro.

Bob.Hey ! How about that Bar-B-Que? That was

some good eating! We had almost 200 people showup and eat. I was at the door listening to the com-ments and I heard things like Best BBQ Ive had in

a long time. Man Im full! and Wow they reallyfilled that plate up! I took that to mean they were

happy with what they got at our Lodge. If youmissed it this year, mark your calendar for next yearand be sure to get your tickets. You dont want to

    miss it twice!

That about wraps me up for this monthBrothers. Here is hoping we can see you in Lodgeor at one of our many fine meals or other functions. We have a lot of new stuff going on and it is all ex-citing and fun. Check us out! Until then, may theGreat Architect watch over you and yours and Peacebe in your hearts. W Hank DeBerry

    GRAND MASTER

DISCOURSEComments can be send to [email protected]

    Farewell

Dear Brothers:It has been an interesting journey and I have en-

joyed communicating with the Craft for nearly three years.I cannot tell you how much your comments and feedbackhas meant to me whether positive or negative, whether weengaged in an exchange of emails or just received yourcomments.

It has been wonderful to find that we had Broth-ers that have received the Discourse as far out as Australiaand the British Isle or who knows maybe further. I wasreally amazed as some of the Brothers in these countriesmade commentary of receiving the Discourse that hadbeen forwarded to them by friends.

I thank all the Brothers that recognized the valuein the messages to forward them to other Brothers andmore especially those that used some of the Discourses for

educating their membership in their Lodge, that was espe-cially nice to hear and it inspired me to continue in thisendeavor.

I always wonder how many Brothers received theDiscourse not just through my email but also those thathad been forwarded. Its interesting how this thing calledinternet can reach such long distances instantaneously. Idont know if we will ever find out, but it sure would beinteresting to know. If you can help by dropping me a notetelling me where you are and how many you forwarded itwould be interesting tracking this last Discourse.

It has been a true pleasure communicating withMasons that have the best interest of the Fraternity at handand want to raise the bar in an effort to improve the quality

of the membership and practice Masonry as it was in-tended.Masonry has always been selective, even in its

operative state it was not open to everyone, and the tradewas handed down from fathers to sons. As a matter of factthe concept of Grand Lodges was created to slow down theindiscriminate acceptance of individuals and create a stan-dard with minimum requirements as to age, reputation, servitude, and belief in a supreme being.

The concept started three decades ago of one dayclasses to turn around the eroding numbers due mainly tothe non-payment of dues at least in the Grand Lodges inthe United States. This has clearly not worked and has nothad the effect of turning around the loss of membership.

This is a cyclical event much like others in society and wehave experience them before, during the 1800s and1900s also followed by periods of growth.

Anytime you experience a large influx of peopleduring a certain period of time you must also expect tolose a large number of people down the road by normalattrition. We have been experiencing this the last three toseven decades depending on what part of the country youare in and when your Grand Lodge peaked its membership. There were several reasons for this, one we didnt worryfor quite some time and by the time we started to addressthe situation we were behind the eight ball. Two those thatexperienced it later ignored what was happening in theirSister Grand Lodges as they were still having positive

growth. Three when everyone decided that there was a problem asthey saw it (I dont believe there is a problem) the response was tokeep the Degree fees low and keep the dues down so as to bring inmore candidates that can afford it, we lowered the requirements inthe sense that catechisms were shortened or eliminated, no educa-tion required, we created the one day class and we basically laid torest the high requirements and moral standards we had for nearly250 years, and still we have not turned the loss around. Guess whatyou will never do it this way, it has never worked before, and it willnot work in the future.

You may ask yourself why is he saying that? The answeris simple, men coming to Masonry who are looking for a social clubwill never fit in and will soon leave or never participate, men whoare looking for value such as personal and spiritual growth do notfind it in our system today or lets say in very few places, and by farleave because you promise to make him better and you failed todeliver by lowering the requirements and not providing him thevehicle by which he can achieve your promise to make good menbetter, you failed to deliver on your promise.

We are so afraid to stand up for the great things our Frater-nity should represent and are tearing at the very fabric of this greatInstitution trying to make it inclusive of everyone. We have erasedthe clearly black and white issues of morality and have made a greatshade of gray; we make excuses for wrong doing, we have lost our

sense of justice, we continue to erode the deportment required inour assemblies and finally have lost all sense of gentlemanly con-duct.

The turnaround of our Fraternity will not depend on a lead-ership that by far changes yearly, the turnaround will depend on themembership which remains a constant and continuity of the Craftand therefore it will even be more difficult when the majority of theCraft have not been educated in Masonry and the only thing theyknow is the present system of lower standards and requirements.Only through research and education can we start to learn how toproperly observe how our Craft was meant to be practiced. Stay thecourse Be a Leader; Make it Happen on your shoulders rest thesalvation of the Craft.

YOU need to be the one Brother in your Lodge that can

make the change by educating and leading by word and deed thosewho have truly come to the Craft looking to improve themselves inMasonry both personally and spiritually. I charge each and everyone of you to make a difference.

In closing this will be my last Discourse, I like you willcontinue to work in the quarries of Freemasonry trying to educatemy Brothers and promoting the best this Noble and Ancient Institu-tion has to offer for higher quality, greater achievements, and bettermen around the world.

I raise my prayers to the Great Architect of the Universethat we can turn this Fraternity around. Make this your commitmentas a dedication to our three hundred year anniversary which is justaround the corner. We may not get there by 2017 but at least we canbe well on our way, we did not get here overnight but we can cer-

tainly start the movement towards the right direction one Brother ata time, one Lodge at a time and be the beacon of light and hope forthis Fraternitys third century.

Farewell my Brothers, God speed in all your undertakingsmay they be fruitful and influential, to the benefit of our great Fra-ternity. God Bless Freemasonry.Respectfully and Fraternally Submitted, I remain your most humbleservant

    STROKE AWARENESS

Brothers, chances are everyone reading this knows some who has suffered from a stroke. Roughly

795,000 Americans each year suffer from new or recurrent strokes which means a stroke occurs every 40 sec-

onds. Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year, which is 1 out of every 18 deaths which makes Stroke the

No. 4 cause of death. I would like to take a few minutes to share with you some of the signs and symptoms of

a stroke to help you become more aware.

Strokes most often affect the elderly who have a history of atherosclerosis (fat deposits in the arteries),heart disease, or hypertension (high blood pressure). The signs and symptoms of stroke are associated with the

specific area of the brain that has been affected by a disruption in the blood flow. It normally involves the ar-

eas that control our speech, sensation, and muscle function. The onset can be sudden and may, but not always,

by accompanied by a seizure, headache, or dysphasia (inability to swallow).

The most common sign of a stroke is paralysis, usually its only partial paralysis and affects one ex-

tremity or both extremities on one side of the body, and /or facial droop, in which there is a loss of facial ex-

pression on one side and the facial features droop downward. Some people when experiencing a stroke may

only experience weakness in the arms and legs which may progress to paralysis.

Another common sign is a persons mental status. Frequently stroke victims will be suffering from al-

tered mental status, appearing confused and slurring their speech. They may also be suffering from dizziness, blurred vision in one or both eyes, headaches, or nausea.

Here is a good four step evaluation process to give to someone you suspect is having a stroke. It is a

valid stroke screening evaluation tool and has been adopted by most Emergency Medical Services. There are

    four steps to this test:

    1. Ask the person to show you their teeth or give you a big smile. If they can only use the muscles on

one side of their face to smile then they are experiencing facial droop which is a sign of a stroke.

    2. Have the person hold both of their arms out in front of them and ask them to keep the arms extended

and close their eyes for about 10 seconds. If one of their arms begins to drift or drop downwards

that is a sign of a stroke and is called arm drift.

    3. Ask the person to repeat this phrase. You cant teach an old dog new tricks. If their speech isslurred or they cant repeat the phrase accurately then that is a sign of a stroke.

    4. Test their grip strength. Hold out your hands to the person and extend your first two fingers out-

wards. Ask them to grasp your fingers and squeeze with both hands, if you notice that one of their

arms is considerably weaker than the other, and if this condition is not normal for them, that is a

    sign of a stroke.

If you give someone this test and they fail even one portion of it, its important that you call your local

ambulance service and get them to the hospital as soon as possible. Time is of the utmost importance when

dealing with someone having a stroke. When you call they will ask you when was this person last seen normal.

It is important to give an accurate timeline of when they were last seen normal. Healthcare providers at the

hospitals have a short window of time, 3 to 5 hours from the initial onset, when dealing with severe strokes

There may be times when someone you know is experiencing these symptoms and fails a portion of

this test, yet minutes later they are back to their normal self and may not even realize something was wrong. In

these cases it is still important to seek medical help. They may have suffered from what is called a TIA or

Transient Ischemic Attack. The signs and symptoms of TIAs generally last no longer than 15 minutes and will

most always resolve themselves within 1 hour of onset. But remember this, 30% of people who suffer a TIA

will eventually have a stroke, usually within a month after the TIA so I would encourage you to seek medical

help for anyone displaying these signs and symptoms.

Freemasonry has pro-moted fellowship, it hasnurtured brotherhood, ithas practiced charity. Ithas education, it has beenfounded on truth and the

cardinal virtues. But what is Masonry's greatestmission in life today? What should be the thrust

of modern Masonry? Those are the answers weare presently seeking, and on our success in find-ing the answer depends the future of our Frater-nity.

    - L. L. Williams -

Is our future secure in Freemasonry? Are weusing everything we have learned over the past 300plus years to make it a better Fraternity. I think wehad better stop, step back and think this thingthrough more than we have. Yes, we have a Broth-erhood and yes, we have Fellowship at all our meet-

ings. Yes we practice Charity in our daily lives. We have given, even when we knew we ourselvesneeded it more. Oh yes, and it is founded on Truth,so here is some very real, hard, Truth Brothers.

Yes, our Grand Lodge officers and ourLodge officers are trying their very best to hold thisFraternity together, but they cannot do it alone. Weare faced with rising costs everyday and we meetthem head on. The same men step up every timewe need them and we use them until they are usedup or fed up with being the only ones doing. Wenever think to say Thank you to the Brothers who

have gone above and beyond to do the workneeded. When is the last time you attended a De-gree? Especially an EA Degree. The very most im-portant work that a Lodge can do is bring a newman into our Fraternity. This is where our futurelies Brothers! New men in our Fraternity! At thelast EA degree I attended, I am very sorry to saythat there was a total of 14 men there and 8 of thosewere the Officers putting on the Degree! Do youthink that new brother had a favorable opinion ofhow he was met? How do you think those officersfelt? They worked hard getting ready for that de-gree to make a good impression and for their ownBrothers to not show up in support, is an insult tothem and to the Lodge. It wasnt done to advancethemselves because they cant advance until Janu-ary if then. It was done, to make the newly obli-gated Brother feel that he was becoming a part ofsomething great and good in this world. To let himknow that there is more to Masonry than paying hisdues and carrying a membership card

How many times Brothers must we see thishappen before we act on it? Can the future of our

    Bro. Jeffs Comedy Corner

great Fraternity last if we continue this way? I dontthink it can. Our Grand Masters motto this year isTogether We Can Accomplish Anything and he is ab-solutely right! Because divided we will surely fall apartand be destroyed. Come back to Lodge Brothers, learnagain what Masonry can make you feel good about, inyourselves and your lives. Be a Mason everyday andshow your friends, neighbors and strangers alike whatwe have going for us. Show them what it means to be aMason. May the Great Architect look down on you alland keep you well and safe from harm.
