Light makes life, and life is lived in light. At Louis Poulsen, we never design just to win awards;

we do not look for inspiration in trends, but in our perception of lighting and aesthetics which are

defi ned in our lighting philosophy. Our lighting starts and ends with people. Decades of research

and development have been invested in creating the highest quality lighting for reaching a highly

personal, more human level.

Life would not exist without light. Yet at Louis Poulsen

we see light not only as a necessity, but also as an op-

portunity. As daylight fades, our lighting is designed to

take over, adding new dimensions and creating vibrant

spaces, both indoors and out. This ongoing development

of artifi cial lighting for the benefi t of human well-being

remains as our greatest endeavor.

The one detail that we consider the most important part of

the fi xtures of Louis Poulsen - lighting technique. Each aspect

infl uences the construction and the light distribution. Every

component has its specifi c function. The product is designed

for a light source that creates the feeling of comfort and hu-

manizes the atmosphere. The design of Louis Poulsen fi xtures

is for the eyes only – in more ways than one.

Intelligent lighting is often used to describe electronically-controlled

lighting. Our philosophy is that all of our lighting is intelligent. Based on

a unique approach to light, which is considered throughout the manu-

facturing process, we examine all aspects of the design, down to the

smallest detail, giving the term intelligent lighting an added dimension

and adhering to one simple rule – no detail without a purpose.

Updating a product is always done with the great-

est respect for the originally designed lighting con-

cept. At the same time all details still have to have

a function. To be true to our product philosophy will

always be the challenge, but at the same time the

warranty for a solution focussing on people. This is

why Louis Poulsen products maintain their power of

attraction. No compromises – only the best solution.

The basics of Louis Poulsen are to create solutions with the

best possible comfort for human beings. The humanization

of light sources includes many aspects, but the most im-

portant is to avoid obtrusive glare so it becomes easier to

see and to be seen, and hence feeling secure and comfort-

able in a pleasant atmosphere. Therefore, the quality of

light is not just measureable fi gures but more the human

experience of the light.

Satellit Mini has been copied all over the world and inspired myriad outdoor

lighting solutions, but why settle for a copy when you can get the original?

The lighting concept of Satellit Mini has always been unique, and the chal-

lenge for the LED version was to maintain this extraordinary uniqueness -

especially in terms of glare-free lighting and the sense of feeling secure. The

process has been long and challenging, as described earlier. The concept has

been turned upside down, so it is now the LED that points downward that

delivers 75% of the light spread on the pavement, the rest comes from the

upper LED by the refl ection of the top shield, this takes care of the area closer

to the post. The antiglare ring now functions as the LED heat sink, and the

stems cover the power supply cord. The famous Satellit Mini idiom has been

kept, so replacements in existing projects is possible without disturbing the

overall perception of the lighting atmosphere.

with both functional and dec-

orative lighting. LP Nest brings nature

into the urban environment. The simplicity of

the design fi ts carefully into a variety of locations – and

brings new life to the surroundings and its people. LP Nest

is the newest post top from Louis Poulsen, also new in the way

of thinking light. LP Nest carries the top plate which works as

a refl ector and the mechanical design ensures full glare control

in addition to a good vertical light distribution. Again, like other

Louis Poulsen post top luminaires, LP Nest keeps its graphical

idiom whether lit or unlit. The dimensions secure a quiet ap-

pearance no matter where the fi xture is placed, and the light

distribution makes it unique for any application.

The naval idiom comes from the bollards along the harbour quays. A pure

functional object. The design expresses the function. No details without a

purpose. This is Rubbie. Rubbie is, as the name indicates, made of rub-

ber. It is both hard and soft at the same time, harder than your normal

experience of rubber, soft compared to aluminum. The material has been

tested for more than 5 years, and has shown a fantastic durability. Over

the years, the material will become ”designed” by nature similar to the

other bollard of Peter Bysted, the Bysted bollard made of corten steel.

Rubbie is available with color temperatures of 3000K (19W of sys-

tem power) and 4000K (18W of system power). The light distribution

is glare free, has an optimised vertical distribution which creates a

friendly and secure experience for human beings. The height and

the material also make the bollard useable as a relaxing object in

the urban area.

AJ 50 Wall is an indoor and outdoor wall fi xture designed on the basis

of the world-known AJ family. Simple geometrics in austere design

where shapes directly refl ect the light emission. The location,

color rendition (RA>80) and color temperature (3000°K) of

the LED help maintain the well-known and valued light-

ing comfort. AJ 50 Wall is made of die cast alumi-

num with a textured surface that offers better

resistance to the challenges of the weather.

Available in black, aluminum color and

white. State-of-the-art LED techno-

logy means that the driver can

be dispensed with. AJ 50

downward lighting.

The white inner shade

refl ects light downwards and the precise angle of the

shade provides decorative backlight that illuminates wall and

material in a comfortable and exclusive manner.

Last year Kipp Wall and bollard celebrated their 10th anniversary. Since the beginning, the

Kipp family has proven its uniqueness. Effi ciency is part of the design, and the LED-versions

are no exceptions. The matte opal diffuser ensures a non glaring light distribution. The de-

sign optimises the use of the light source whether it is a conventional light source or LEDs.

Focusing on each detail the Alfred Homann way

ensures both effi ciency and product quality.

The comfort is unique and the adaptability to

all kinds of architecture and surroundings is a trade

mark of Alfred Homann. The light distribution is symmetri-

cal downwards. The relationship between the curved design of

the top shade and the calculated distance to the LED ensures a

uniform and wide distribution of light.

kipp bollard ledAn extremely good example of one of the important issues

in the Louis Poulsen lighting philosophy – to have the same

idiom both lit an unlit. As simple as it gets. But with a com-

fort for humans combined with rarely seen effi ciency. As with

the other member of the Kipp family, the sense of simplicity

is the key to success. A fantastic adaptability to any surround-

ings whether architectural or nature. The light distribution

is symmetrical downwards. The relationship between the

curved design of the top shade and the calculated distance

to the LED ensures a uniform and wide distribution of light.

Furthermore, the freestanding position ensures superb 360°

light distribution around the fi xture, so both the paths and

the space behind are beautifully illuminated.

The Nyhavn family was established as a custom-design project. Tasked with making a

new wall fi xture for the renovation of the old yards behind Nyhavn, Alfred Homann and

a colleague designed the Nyhavn Wall ”to build a bridge between old architecture and

modern lighting”. The LED version maintains the characteristic light of the Nyhavn family.

All the fi xtures in the family cast direct downlight on the pavement, and the light emitted

fades out evenly around the fi xture. The characteristic rings at the top of the fi xture serves

two purposes. One is to retain the fi xture’s idiom when it is active; achieved because the

gentle light emitted from the shade makes the fi xture appear similar in both daylight and

darkness. The other aim is to allow the light emitted from the top to serve as a guiding

light when the post is placed along streets and paths.

Waterfront meets all architectural challenges. It broadens the meaning of

adaptability. Fitting into the surroundings with an aesthetically

silent appearance makes Waterfront a lighting statement.

The robust design leaves no doubt about how the light

distribution appears, and the simple idiom has a

unique adaptability to all kinds of architecture,

new as well as old. Waterfront is character-

ised by its diffused light distribution. The light

emitted is glare-free and distributed down-

wards to create a symmetrical pattern on the

ground. The rugged construction makes it

suitable for use in public areas.

pagoda led

Shortly described as comfort meeting function, and function that

melts into the ambience. Pagoda was born as an add-on to inground

fi xtures, but the new LED version is designed as an onground fi xture.

Four bolts and a mains supply is all you need. The multi-function-

ality of the Pagoda, both a street-chair and a “bollard”, makes this

product quite unique. The light distribution is a low area lighting

that underlines and creates a very special atmosphere at squares,

plazas, streets, etc. The simplicity of the design and the casting in

one process makes the Pagoda extremely vandal resistant. The form

protects the light source from direct vandalism.

Simplicity is the formula for this circular fi xture. The light source determines its

shape; its function and the materials. The shape signals the illumination, and

the illumination reinforces the shape. But don’t get fooled by the simplicity.

Behind the glare-free light lies a unique way of distributing the light from the

extremely glary LEDs. Foster + Partners launched a vision for the new light

source in the Louis Poulsen lighting universe. The color temperature is 3000°K

and the light source consists of 30 LEDs. Because of the high demands Louis

Poulsen places on the quality of light, it has been of utter importance to use

only the best controlled LED’s regarding color temperature. The canopy hides

a unique system for adjusting the balance of the fi xture quick and easy. The

glass diffuser gives the product a light and exclusive appearance which gives

the room a surprising and extraordinary atmosphere.

Before making a decision on which lighting fi xture to use, consider these

parameters.

Functional aspects such as fl ux levels, effi ciency demands, lumen per watt,

lumen depreciation, distance between poles/fi xtures, mounting heights,

cutoff vs. non-cutoff, durability and safety.

Comfort details which include light pollution, light source CRI, degree of glare,

ease of maintenance, color rendering, security and well being.

Ambience effects such as uniformity, sustainability, light temperature

(warm, neutral or cold), position of the light source, adaptability and aesthetics.

During the development of each of our products, we carefully consider these pa-

rameters which are the three components of the Louis Poulsen philosophy. We

stand behind each fi xture, proud in knowing that we have designed the best fi x-

ture possible. When deciding on which product to use for your lighting project,

consider your priorities carefully and always keep in mind...Light is for people!
