  • Revisiting the Rubric

  • Reflecting On Your LearningHow has your thinking about academic vocabulary changed over the past year? What additional big ideas about academic vocabulary do you have?Have you changed your responses to any of the items on the self-assessment rubric? In which areas do you still want to learn?

  • Sustaining the EffortLearn with and from colleaguesDevelop a professional library on vocabulary developmentEnsure that classrooms have a a range of resources

  • Learning Words Inside and OutsideWhen our teaching is at its best, our students take what theyve learned inside our classrooms to their outside lives. Vocabulary doesnt exist between the school bellsit is carried with each learner for the rest of their lives.

  • Add your name and institution to customize your presentation. It is also helpful to include photos of students and teachers from your school or district. This personalizes the presentation.

You can use each component of the rubric to gauge success. For example, if you targeted teacher modeling you might have periodically asked teachers to complete that section of the rubric after reading the chapter in Learning Words Inside & Out, observing videos of other teachers, participating in demonstration lessons, and receiving peer coaching. If the professional development plan has been working, the average self-assessment score should be increasing. As it does, you can recognize effort and celebrate success.
