master of science anD Doctoral Degree programs in learning anD cognition

IntentThe Master of Science and Doctoral degree programs in Learning and Cognition are designed for students and professionals interested in the application of cognition, learning, and developmental theories. Our students come from many backgrounds to apply Learning and Cognition in research, classroom, government, or organizational settings. Applicants will find that our program is highly individualized, providing the flexibility to select the training that meets their needs. We offer a program that provides an excellent grounding in research and includes students in close working relationships with faculty. Our students may also earn Certificates in Program Evaluation, Measurement & Statistics, Blended Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT), and Institutional Research, among others.

Thesis and Dissertation Topics Students design and conduct a study of some aspect of cognition or learning culminating in their thesis or dissertation. Upon completing their thesis or dissertation, each student makes an oral presentation to their committee.

Recent Thesis and Dissertation Examples:• Teacher-efficacy and cultural receptivity as predictors of burnout in novice urban teachers after one year of teaching• The effects of reading purpose on levels of mental representation and general comprehension of texts in middle school students• Developmental changes in preservice teachers’ mental models of learning and instruction• Preservice teachers’ reasons for teaching and their beliefs about teaching• Intercultural communication and foreign language anxiety• Facilitating computer discussion boards among college students

Program of Study Students choose from courses in cognition, learning, social psychology, development, research methods, statistics, and program evaluation. Each student creates a specialization area with the help of his or her major professor.

Career OpportunitiesOur graduates are faculty in colleges and universities, as well as researchers and consultants at school districts, federal agencies, the armed forces, and private corporations.

Program Faculty Learning and Cognition faculty hold doctorates from major universities. We disseminate our research in a variety of forums, such as presenting at the American Educational Research Association Conference or publishing in the Journal of Educational Psychology. The distinguishing feature of our faculty is that we involve students with research and teaching in a highly collegial atmosphere.

Application Deadlines We only admit new students for the Fall semester. For the most opportunities to win fellowships, have your completed application submitted by January 1. The faculty will begin reviewing completed applications on February 15, and acceptance letters will be sent out beginning March 1. Apply by March 1 for the best chances of obtaining a slot. The application portal will close once all Fall slots are filled.

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the start of the 2013 new graduate student recruiting season in the Learning and Cognition Program area within the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at Florida State University (FSU). We are sending you this flyer to distribute to undergraduate and graduate students who you believe may be interested in learning more about the exciting opportunities available to them in our program, which offers the Doctoral degree as well as thesis and non-thesis Master of Science tracks.

The four faculty members of Learning and Cognition are nationally and internationally known for their research expertise in areas such as science education and pre-service teacher beliefs (Dr. Susan Losh), student and teacher motivation for learning and the study of emotion in educational contexts (Dr. Jeannine Turner), teacher professional development and fostering students’ literacy development (Dr. Alysia Roehrig), and early childhood education and the intersection of self- regulatory and literacy development (Dr. Beth Phillips).

All faculty in the program area either have, or are actively pursuing federal and state support for new, cutting-edge research projects – with many opportunities for student funding and exceptional, hands-on research apprenticeship opportunities for students at all levels. Our students are actively involved in designing and implementing collaborative and independent research projects, writing papers, and presenting at conferences. Our program is well known for its individualized, student-centered approach to graduate training, combining a strong focus on research methods, statistics, and learning theory with uniquely tailored course selection that meets the needs of a student body with diverse research interests and career goals. Highly qualified graduate students interested in working with Drs. Roehrig and Phillips also have the opportunity to apply for the Florida State University Predoctoral Interdisciplinary Research Training Fellowship Program, administered through the internationally known Florida Center for Reading Research here at Florida State.
