BEFORE YOU BEGIN

In unit 1 you can take your first steps in learning Spanish. From unit 2 onwards, you’ll find that the structure of eachunit is consistent. Each of the units has four parts:

Part A is presented by Juan Latorre and Teresa Vidal, and gives you the KEY LANGUAGE of the unit.

Part B shows you Juan using the language in real-life situations in Salamanca.You will learn to usethis language yourself.

Part C reminds you of the KEY LANGUAGE and gives you the chance to use the language and havethe satisfaction of realising that you can cope.

Part D reveals the outcome of the story you heard in part B.You should be able to understandthis without any help – although help is there if you need it.

Here is a summary of the main activities you will do to achieve efficient learning:

1 work with the book;

2 listen to the recording;

3 stop the recording to repeat or think;

4 use the book and recording together.

USING THE COURSE In each unit, the most effective way to learn is to start by working on the book and therecording together.You can then use your eyes and your ears to help you to understandand learn.The book and recording will take you step by step through the unit.You’ll seethat the English advice and explanations are always on the left-hand page and that theSpanish they refer to is always opposite, on the right-hand page.

When you feel confident with the language, you can work with just the recording. Listento it as often as you can – in the car, on the train, while doing the housework, for

example.This repeated playing will help you to learn the language andto become really confident and fluent. Sometimes you can listen verycarefully and repeat what you hear.At other times you can just have itin the background while you relax or do something else.All this will

PART A: KEY LANGUAGE

1.1 JUAN AND TERESA Each unit is introduced by Juan and Teresa.They guide you through the KEY LANGUAGE.You’ll also hear it being used by Juan and the people he meets in Salamanca.

In this unit you will learn how to:– say hello (good morning, good afternoon, or good day);– say what your name is;– understand many useful Spanish words and pronounce them the Spanish way.

1.2 KEY LANGUAGE In each unit, you’ll be presented with the KEY LANGUAGE. Here it is for unit 1.

The Spanish words Buenos días can be used to mean hello, good morning, goodafternoon or good day.

Look at the Spanish and make sure that you know what each sentence means.Thenfollow each sentence in the book as you listen to it. Do this several times until you feelconfident with the sentences.Then play them again and repeat after each sentence.Whenthis seems easy, try saying each sentence with each speaker, imitating the speed and theaccent.

This is an excellent learning technique which you can use throughout the course. It canbe summarised as:(i) read and listen;(ii) read, listen and repeat after the Spanish speakers;(iii) read, listen and repeat with the Spanish speakers.

PART B: LANGUAGE IN ACTION

1.3 OVER TO YOU Now you can use the language you have learned. Look at the photos of people (a-d) andthe KEY LANGUAGE opposite and decide what each person would say to introducehimself/herself.To show you how to do it, you’re given an example (un ejemplo, inSpanish). How would you greet Teresa and introduce yourself? (e)

1.4 LEARNING STRATEGIES Though they may be pronounced differently, lots of Spanish words look exactly (or very)like English ones. In addition, many Spanish words are used in English. Recognising themcan often give the key to the meaning of a whole phrase or sentence.You don’t need toknow every word you see or hear to understand the message. Decide how each of thephotos of places on the page opposite should be labelled, using one of these words:

Listen to how these words are said, and repeat each one several times.

1.5 VOCABULARY You already understand a lot of Spanish words, and you can prove it. Cover up theEnglish words below and look at the list of Spanish words on the page opposite.Tick allthose you know, can work out, or guess.Then check with the list on this page, and learnthose you didn’t know.You could copy them into a notebook (the very act of writingthem down will help you to learn them) and carry it around with you, learning a fewwords whenever you have a spare moment. In each unit, you’ll be given a useful hintabout how to learn words. Repeat each sentence, after and then with the speakers, until you’resure you have learned it and can say it with a good accent.Then try adapting some of thesentences you’ve learned, using other words you know, in order to say different things.Think how you’d say:

2.1 WELCOME TO SALAMANCA! Your teacher, Juan, arrives in Salamanca by bus. He observes and records the activity atthe bus station. Mr Ortega, a business manager, is welcomed by Miss Isabel Martín, whoworks at the Tourist Office. Then Juan takes a taxi to his hotel.

In this unit you can learn:– how to say hello and goodbye, please and thank you;– how to attract people’s attention;– and, above all, how to make the most of a small amount of language.

There’s no magic wand that will enable you to speak fluent Spanish overnight. Goodwill isimportant, though.You’ll find, as you hear Juan in Salamanca, that saying please! will getyou by in a whole variety of situations, especially if you smile!

LEARNING STRATEGIES Remember to work through every section with the book and recording as many times asyou need in order to feel comfortable with the language. In unit 1, you learned thesequence: read and listen, then repeat after, and then with, the Spanish speakers.Try tokeep the language in your mind while you do something else.Then try saying the Spanishsentences again, gradually increasing the time gap. In this way, the KEY LANGUAGE willbecome part of your long-term memory – you will have learned it! So, this strategy canbe summed up as:

(i) read and listen;(ii) repeat after the speakers;(iii) repeat with the speakers;(iv) repeat without an immediate model.

2.3 OVER TO YOU You now know how to use Spanish to do some useful jobs. Looking at the photos on theopposite page:

2.4 STRATEGIES It’s a good idea to train yourself to listen and to read in a positive way, picking out thewords that carry the message, and ignoring what is less important.What message isconveyed in the three examples on the page opposite?

2.5 VOCABULARY You’ll understand better if you anticipate the words you expect to hear in a particularsituation and learn them. In this unit, you’ll hear Juan in the station buffet, at thenewspaper kiosk, taking a taxi, and arriving at the hotel.You will hear the words in thelist.

Try learning these words now to make your listening easier. One good technique is toconcentrate on a word and try to ‘photograph’ it in your mind.Then cover it up andwrite it down from memory. Do this with all the words and then with 4 or 5 at a time.

A useful way of dealing with any words you find difficult to remember is to copy themout with their English meanings on a slip of paper, and carry it about with you. Use anyspare moments to revise them – in a bus, for example, or while waiting for the kettle toboil.

2.6 LOOKING AHEAD You’ll find it easier to understand people if you think in advance about what they arelikely to say in certain situations. So, when Juan asks for a coffee at the station buffet, youalready know that he’s unlikely to say I’d like you to bring me a coffee, please, butrather, A coffee, please. Note down in English similar phrases you might hear or needto say:

2.11 GRAMMAR A noun is a word used to name a person, a place or a thing (e.g. Juan, Salamanca,hotel). In Spanish, some nouns are masculine and some feminine.With masculine nouns,you use el for the and un for a or an (e.g. el restaurante, un restaurante).With feminine nouns, you use la for the and una for a or an (e.g. la cafetería, unacafetería).

The best way to learn whether a noun is masculine or feminine is to learn el or la witheach noun as you meet it. But don’t worry too much about it: you will still be perfectlyunderstood if you sometimes use the wrong one!

2.12 LISTEN AGAIN Each time you hear someone say ¡... por favor! repeat the whole sentence in thepause which follows it.

PART C:TEST YOURSELF Practice using what you’ve learned. Play the recording through once or twice until you’recomfortable with the language.Then play it again, and repeat what you hear.

2.13 In the dialogue on the page opposite, you see how you can develop the bare formula¡... por favor! into a more lengthy exchange, simply by adding other phrases from thevocabulary of this unit. Make up a similar dialogue in a café. First, attract the attention ofthe waiter and ask for a coffee.Then ask for the telephone. Look at the solution.Yourdialogue may not be identical, but it could still be correct.
