James Hector McCallum1918 - 1984
James Hector McCallum, affectionately known as "Mac", was born September 23, 1918 nearMaxton in Robeson County, North Carolina. He was the youngest of twelve children born to Jeffer-son and Jackie Ann McCallum. After graduating from the public school in Robeson County, heearned the Bachelor of Science degree from Fayetteville State University and the Master of Sciencedegree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. He alsostudied at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest and at the School ofEvangelism at Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mac was admitted to the North Carolina Conference of the Central Jurisdiction in 1942. He servedthe church well and was a leader in the merger of the North Carolina-Virginia Conference into theNorth Carolina Conference of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. Hisappointments included Hoffman, Mt. Zion, Bomore, Piney Grove, Laurinburg, Cool Springs, Max-ton, Jerusalem, Beauty Spot, John Wesley, Wilson Temple, the Administrative Assistant to theCabinet, Sanford District Superintendent, and the Conference Council on Ministries Staff. In all ofthese appointments, Mac was loved and admired because of his calm, quiet character and his outstan-ding leadership ability. He was a sterling example of God's grace and the Christian Ministry.
Mac loved music and often served as the musician at churches where he was pastor. He organized achoir from several churches that sang at the 1980 session of the North Carolina Conference, represen-ting the Black worship experience. He served on several boards and agencies and led the NorthCarolina Conference clergy delegation to the 1976 General Conference of the United MethodistChurch. He made a long and lasting contribution to the Church he loved so much when he co-authored the book, TO BE FAITHFUL TO OUR HERITAGE, a history of Black UnitedMethodism in North Carolina.
In addition to his work in the ministry, Mac served the children of North Carolina as a publicschool teacher and principal for twenty-one years.
Mac married Wilhelmina Powell McCallum and they have one daughter, Rachelle.James Hector McCallum died on Friday morning, April 27, 1984. He died as he lived, peacefully,
calmly, quietly, and serenely. At his death many accolades were sent to Mrs. McCallum. The Direc-tor of the Methodist Home for Children, Rufus H. Stark III said: "He was a true pioneer, for hehelped this Conference to break from the old racism of the past. The work that you and Jim did onthe Sanford District will always stand as one of the greatest examples of Christian Ministry done inthis Conference. Mac's ability to do that job with grace and confidence, understanding and strength isone of the greatest stories of our times. It took a great deal of courage for him to take that appoint-ment and I shall always admire and respect him. He lived the spirit of Jesus as well as anyone I haveknown."
"Rev. Mac" served as interim pastor three times, 1947-1949, 1956-1963 and May-October, 1983.

History of Piney Grove United Methodist Church
Piney Grove United Methodist Church is celebrating its 100th Anniversary under the leadership ofthe Rev. Robert A. Fairley, Sr. We are proud to note that the present pastor is from the Maxton area.According to the best sources available, the first pastor appointed to Piney Grove was the Rev. J .H.Hunter in 1886. The earliest deed was dated October 31, 1889, for the purchase of one acre of landfor the sum of twenty dollars. Peter McRae, S.A. McQueen and Jim Fairley were the trustees thatsigned the deed.
The deed specified that the premises would be used, kept and maintained for divine worship andmembership. There were a lot of faithful and dedicated persons who were very instrumental in thebuilding and growth of the church.
Brief historical accounts of Piney Grove's accomplishments over the years cannot be properlyacknowledged due to the lack of written records.
Based on material made available from a publication on the history of Black Methodism in NorthCarolina, we would like to honor the Ministers who provided leadership for our church. The follow-ing is a list of their names and dates of appointments:

All of the people of the Rockingham District re]OlCe with you and your peopletoday as Piney Grove celebrates its one hundredth anniversary! Surely youare surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses for this occasion as those whoselives and talents provided the leadership for the organization of this churchin days gone by speak words of praise for its continuing life today.
History is a great teacher. Too often we look at the negative side of thepast and say, "We'll never make that mistake again," but history books arefilled with persons who did make the same mistake again and again. As a partof the Body of Christ - the Church - we look at history with a positive view,to see repeatedly how the power of God in Christ Jesus, His Son, allows us tobe reclaimed from the mistakes of the past with power to live a strong andrenewed life in days to come.
The witness of Piney Grove is not found so much in a building as it is in thelives of those who pass through its doors week by week to find refreshmentand peace from their daily trials and tribulations elsewhere in the world. The joy of changed lives and the legacy of new opportunities are the marks ofPiney Grove's contribution to the Kingdom of God in this particular place.
Surely God will continue to bless the faithful response and dedication of Hispeople here in this community as they worship and praise Him in the comingyears. May the next hundred years be still sweeter!

It is a distinct honor to serve as the Pastor of Piney Grovefollowing the illustrious and dedicated leadership of my predecessors.Rich is the heritage; great is the challenge to continue building ontheir strengths.
I cannot proceed with this brief statement without expressingmy genuine appreciation to the Homecoming Committee and all who haveworked diligently in.the promotion of this historic event. Homecoming, "86" ushers in a new era for Piney Grove. As wecelebrate a century of service to this community, we seize thisopportunity to seriously develop plans today for tomorrow. Reflectingon past achievements, evaluating present accomplishments, Piney Grovemust now point its efforts toward the future by developing a ministryof HOPE. This ministry must provide hope for continual spiritualuplift; hope for greater membership response in meeting the needs ofthe church; hope for a broader vision of service to the community atlarge.
As a Piney Grove Team, with the help of Almighty God, we shallbe His people in spirit and in truth.

Thanks be to God our Father who has brought us and sustainedus through these 100 years.
Emma Ruth McLean
We give thanks to God for the forefathers who labored, prayed, and gave their lives that we might have this place of worship. Wealso give thanks for the loyal mothers who labored and prayed withthem.
Because of the inspiration and prayers of these dedicatedmothers & fathers, young men and women answered the call to theGospel ministry.
We have a rich heritage of which we can be proud. It is myprayer that God will grant us the courage and strength to move for-ward. Let us hold to his unchanging hand and follow where He leads.
In this faith let us say "To God be the glory, great thingsHe has done:1
