IntroduCtIon If we had to describe Latvia in a single word, it would be harmonious. the many reforms experienced by Latvia throughout its centuries-long history are what have made it so diverse: settlements and villages of the ancient Latvians, forts and castles of German crusaders, medieval towns and swedish-style houses, soviet-period military facilities – every era has left something distinctive behind.

Latvia is located in northern europe, at a strategically significant crossroads of many nationalities, cultures and denominations living side-by-side: we have historic Lutheran and old Believer churches, magnificent Catholic and orthodox places of worship, synagogues and even mosques. Latvia’s greatest treasures are its unspoilt nature, the Baltic sea and the mild climate that allows all four seasons to coexist.

Latvia’s relatively small territory is rich with dense forests, rivers, lakes and beaches. Furthermore, a large part of Latvia’s natural resources are state-owned and freely accessible. At the same time, Latvia still has corners untouched by humans, where rare bird and animal species live undisturbed. An inspirational environment. And a stone’s throw from capital city riga, there is a wide choice of pursuits: sports, cultural events, sunny beaches, rustic saunas, or living pages of history. Whichever direction you choose, adventure is guaranteed.

this guide aims to help you discover Latvia’s most outstanding sights, even if you only have a day: you can devote it to a stroll through riga’s historical streets, a trip to the Middle Ages in sigulda, a boat ride through the ancient valley of the Gauja river, bird and animal watching in a nature park or visiting the most beautiful castles. We have tried out these routes, fallen in love with them, and now recommend them to explorers of Latvia. A warning based on our own experience: the trips – especially if you wish to enjoy them unhurriedly – may take a little extra time. some locations, for example natural attractions or country houses, have to be looked for more carefully, as some routes are not well signposted. However, information on tourist attractions is available at regional tourist information points, by calling the tourist Hotline or in the internet at www.latvia.travel

remember – when travelling, the most beautiful adventures arrive unexpectedly. Latvia, with its peaceful, harmonious rhythm of life, is best enjoyed without haste.

Riga is known for its 800-year old cobblestone streets, UNESCO World Heritage-listed city centre, thriving art and culture scene and charming parks. But it doesn’t end there. Stop! Take a deep breath and look around: Riga will surprise you. Leafy neighbourhoods that are nesting

places for waterfowl, churches of different denominations coexisting in peace, local farmers’ organic produce for sale in the very heart of the city. Watch and you’ll see Riga growing. Disused warehouses become cultural centres; ancient traditions are reborn while new ones take shape.

the Powder Tower (1) has been guarding the entrance to old riga by Bastion Hill for seven centuries. In the Middle Ages it held a city wall lookout, armoury, prison and even a torture chamber. now home to the Latvian War Museum where you can find out how two World Wars enveloped Latvia and how the nation had to fight for its independence, twice. Close to here, the Swedish Gate (2) – the only surviving gate of the city’s ancient defensive wall – leads into old riga from the Jacob’s Barracks side. the nearby St. Jacob’s Church (3) is one of the oldest churches in riga, so old that at the time it was built it was outside the riga city boundary. A short walk away, at Mazā Pils iela 17, 19 and 20, stand the Three Brothers (4) – old riga’s most famous buildings, the oldest dwelling house complex in the city, built in the dutch style in the 15th and 17th centuries. Riga Castle (5), built during the Middle Ages and serving as a Livonian order stronghold for several centuries, is located at the end of the street, towards the daugava river. It is currently the riga residence of Latvia’s President. the castle’s inner courtyard holds two outstanding Late Gothic-style mouldings - Mestr Walter Von Pletenberg (1515) and Madonna with Child (1515). the Daugava Embankment (6) is a favourite spot for rigans to take leisurely walks on warm spring and summer evenings. stops for boat trips offering city views from the water, as well as longer excursions to Jūrmala or Baltezers can be found here. Along the embankment, you can take a look at the 19th century Anglican Church (7), as well as the Big Christopher sculpture (8). According to ancient legend,

Christopher is the man who began building riga. this sculpture is a copy of the 16th century original, which can be seen (along with other interesting historical artefacts), at the riga dome ensemble: the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation (9), which is the oldest public museum in the Baltic states. the museum collection holds more than 500 000 items. next to the museum is the famous Riga Dome Cathedral (10) on which construction began soon after riga was founded – the tale goes that the first stone was laid by Bishop Albert, riga’s founding father. the church boasts one of the world’s most valuable historical organs. narrow Krāmu iela leads from the dome square to Rātslaukums (11), where riga Town Hall (12) is located. You’ll also notice the magnificent House of Blackheads (13), where the Brotherhood of Blackheads held their gatherings during the Middle Ages. rātslaukums also holds Latvia’s Museum of Occupation (14), where the history of the country’s 50-year occupation is explained. Close by is riga’s most popular panoramic viewing point in the tower of the 800-year-old St. Peter’s Church (15), the narrowest spire on the old riga skyline. At st. Peter’s Church you can stand on riga’s exact geographic centre.

The houses and picturesque parks of Riga’s centre mostly originate in the 19th and 20th centuries and offer a glimpse into pre-war city life.

one of riga’s most recognisable sights is the symbol of Latvian unity and independence - the Freedom Monument (16). At its base, watch the guard of honour change hourly. two minutes walk from here, you’ll soon spot the Byzantine-style Nativity of Christ Cathedral (17) – the largest russian orthodox church in the Baltics. Close by is the 5-hectare Vērmane Park (18). during the summer, city dwellers are often treated to free concerts on the park’s open-air stage. Intriguing amateur chess tournaments also take place here. Along one side of the park stretches riga’s most popular flower market (19), or sakta – fragrant bunches of flowers can be bought here at any time of the day or year. the Riga Cinema (20), pre-war Latvia’s grandest picture house, stands nearby. the courtyards between elizabetes, Barona and dzirnavu ielas hide Bergs Bazaar (21) – a small quarter developed as a pedestrian shopping arcade 100 years ago. It is still a location for restaurants, shops, various events and organic produce markets. the greatest pride of riga’s architecture is its unesCo World Heritage-listed Jugendstils (Art nouveau). the houses at Elizabetes (22), Tērbatas (23), Brīvības (24) and Skolas iela (25) are mainly of the Jugendstils and romanticism periods, while quiet Alberta iela (26) is europe’s most famous example of Jugendstils architecture. the Riga Jugendstils Museum (27) is also located here.

roMAntIC rIGA: PārdAuGAVA

The Daugava River – wide enough to hold back the bustle and noise of the centre – divides Pārdaugava from the city centre. Time-worn streets and houses, romantic wood-based architecture and spacious parks await you here.

Akmens tilts (28) and the nearby AB Dambis (29) are favourite evening strolls for rigans and city visitors – from here you can see the view of old riga immortalised in the most stunning city postcards. If you don’t want to walk across the bridge, a tram or bus will take you across. Pārdaugava’s greatest asset is its spacious parks: in summer a haven of fresh air and flowers; in winter they draw outdoor sports enthusiasts – skiers, skaters and tobogganers. Uzvaras (Victory) Park (30) is one of riga’s most popular cross-country skiing spots. Victory Park is connected to the scenic Arkādija Park (31), a common stop for wedding parties following the tradition of leaving a padlock on park bridges as a symbol of the young couple’s love. About 20 minute’s walk away you’ll find the Kalnciems Quarter (32) – the restored wood buildings of this small romantic district bring to life 100 years of history. today, the quarter is a location for design shops, organic produce markets, exhibitions and creative workshops, as well as the eco-conscious Māja restaurant. While taking an architectural tour of Pārdaugava, pay attention to the striking Āgenskalns Water Tower (33) in Alises iela, as well as the red St. Martin’s Lutheran Church (34). the pride of Pārdaugava is its 15-hectare University of Latvia Botanical Gardens (35), offering surprising and unusual plant collections throughout the seasons.

For seekers of sights more unusual, the Mežaparks and Sarkandaugava districts offer unexpected calm, natural scenery and romantic architecture. Mežaparks (36) – surrounded by pine forests and the Ķīšezers lake, this district was developed as an elegant residential area in the early 20th century. Mežaparks boasts the almost century-old Riga Zoo (37), home to over 430 animal species and perfect for a family day out. You can continue off the beaten track by driving to the further reaches of Sarkandaugava (38) and be surprised by wood houses and yards with washing hung out to dry, just like in days long gone. sarkandaugava’s Aldaris Park (39) was created as a garden for the owner of Latvia’s most famous brewery Aldaris in the 19th century, complete with the artificial castle ruins fashionable at the time – these are still standing and give the park a romantic feel. the Latvian Culture Museum Dauderi (40) can also be found in the park. Former president Kārlis ulmanis once lived here. the museum focuses on culture during Latvia’s first period of independence and Latvian activity in exile during the years of soviet occupation. this route is most easily covered by car as the sights are not connected by convenient public transport links. However, Mežaparks can be reached with a no 11 tram.

The sea is one of Latvia’s greatest riches, perfect for relaxation and leisure activities. Those who prefer taking it easy will love Jūrmala, the largest resort on the Baltic Sea – a place for enjoying the sea air, treating yourself at one of the Spa centres or savouring sumptuous

treats at local restaurants. Coastal nature reserves will satisfy nature lovers, while the alluring scent of freshly smoked fish fills the air in fishing villages along the coast. Further inland, romantic castles, a cinema city and open-air art museum await you, as does as a Guinness Record holder – the world’s most northern vineyard.

JūrMALA on Foot

The most popular resort in the Baltic States promises a great holiday at any time of the year!

the city of Jūrmala, easily reached in only 20 minutes, stretches along the coast for 32 kilometres, but Majori (43) has always been the heart of the city and holidaymakers’ favourite spot. the Jūrmala Museum (44) is also located here, providing information on the cultural history of the town and resort since tsarist russia times. the laid-back, unpretentious atmosphere of Majori is best experienced on Jomas iela (45), visiting souvenir shops, having lunch or enjoying a cappuccino at one of the many cafes. the area’s wood architecture – on Lienes (46), Viktorijas (47) and Konkordijas (48) iela in particular – tells the most vibrant tales of Jūrmala’s residents and guests. Both the restored historical villas and contemporary buildings range from models of sophisticated elegance to boundless flights of fancy. However, the tranquil Gulf of Riga (49) remains Jūrmala’s greatest treasure. After a refreshing dip in the sea on a summer or early autumn afternoon, you can await the amber-coloured sunset with a picnic, while in winter, a crisp walk can be followed by relaxing at one of the modern Jūrmala spa centres. If visiting Jūrmala during the summer, it’s worth checking out the event schedule at the dzintarl Concert Hall – several international festivals and concerts take place here every year. Families should definitely visit the Līvu Aquapark (50), the biggest water park in the Baltics. Jūrmala can be reached by the riga-Jūrmala bike path, on the new Way ferry, by minibus, train (www.ldz.lv) or bus (www.autoosta.lv).

Historical nature parks, romantic villas and restaurants, plus the sea of course!

Lielupe (51) was one of the first built-up areas in Jūrmala, so houses here are especially grand. Just look at the villas on O. Kalpaka prospekts (52), 19. līnija (53) and Rotas iela (54)! the Jūrmala Open-Air Museum (55), on the other hand, tells of a time when fishermen’s’ huts, rather than resorts and villas, stood along the coastline. see the yard and belongings of a typical 19th century fisherman at the museum. the museum is located within the Ragakāpa Nature Reserve (56) – a unique biotope with 17-metre high, white sand dunes and 350-year-old pine trees. three train stops separate Lielupe from Majori (43), but travelling by car, it will take less than 15 minutes. on central Jomas iela (45) in Majori, you’ll have a choice of fantastic dining locations. Beautiful residential buildings can also be seen at Melluži (57) – on Puķu iela (58), Mellužu prospekts (59) and Strēlnieku prospekts (60). Ķemeri and Ķemeri Park (61) are about 20 minutes drive away. Jūrmala’s history as a popular resort has its origins here – in the sulphur springs and therapeutic mud you can still stumble upon in the Ķemeri Park. the recently restored former Ķemeri sanatorium building is set to open again within the next few years. the most majestic and widely known health resort of the 20th century Baltics will be reborn in a manner befitting– an international Kempinski hotel is to open here. Motor vehicle permits for entering Jūrmala good for 24 hrs - LVL 1,00.

A day at the seaside: wind in your hair, the scent of smoked fish, freedom and small fishing villages strung out along 60 kilometres of the Gulf of Riga coast.

the first settlement on the way from Ķemeri to the Kurzeme coast is Bigauņciems (62) – a typical, olden-day Kurzeme fishing village. on the second weekend of July, the sounds of fun-filled Fishermen’s Festivals ring out along the coast. one of the most popular festival locations is the area’s largest village – Lapmežciems (63). the next stop along the Jūrmala – talsi highway is Ragaciems (64), taking its name (literally – Horn village) from a pointed, rocky outcrop stretching into the sea and adding a touch of wilderness to this otherwise gentle landscape. not far from the horn, it is worth taking a look at the industrial-era ragaciems Lighthouse rising above the coastal pine tree line and offering a view of nearby Kaņiera Lake. during the hours of darkness, the sweeping lighthouse beam brings a romantic ambience to the beach. Passing through ragaciems, you’ll be tempted to stop at the stalls of locally caught and smoked fish – this aromatic local fare is a popular delicacy. Between ragaciems and Klapkalnciems lies the 8 km-long Gausā jūdze (Leisurely Mile) (65) – this forest spit, with its air ionized by pine trees and the sea, is perfect for a walk or picnic. 20 km away you’ll find the Rideli Windmill (66). despite being 250 years old, the windmill is still in operation. You will need a car to travel the full route, but Bigauņciems can also be reached by bus (www.autoosta.lv).

Comfortable shoes and a picnic basket will come in handy – the scenery along the Kurzeme coastline should be enjoyed to the full!

Located 30 km from riga, Ķemeri National Park (67) is one of Latvia’s most popular tourist attractions. the park is home to Latvia’s rarest plant and bird species, as well as unusual natural scenery – the 382 km2 park is a real gem of Latvian flora and fauna. At the Black Alder swamp Boardwalk (600 m) you can explore broadleaf-tree wetlands – the swamp forest. Meanwhile Kaņiera Lake is one of the best bird-watching spots in Latvia. An hour’s drive along the coast lies Engure village (68) where you can enjoy a great fisherman-style meal in one of the local cafes. After continuing towards Kolka for 10 km, stop at the Lake Engure Nature Reserve (69), where you’ll find great bird-watching spots (about 190 bird species nest here!). the engure ornithological research Centre is also not far away. Climb one of the bird observation towers and enjoy the coastal landscape views! there are also wild cattle and horse pastures here, while at the end of June and throughout July about 20 species of orchids bloom along the park’s orchid Path. You will need a car to travel the full route, but Ķemeri can also be reached by train (www.ldz.lv) or bus (www.autoosta.lv).

Great for kids!

About 10 km from tukums you’ll find the Cinevilla cinema city (74) – a town built specifically as a film set. scenes from many popular local films can be recognized in its streets, designed in the style of early 20th century Latvian towns. Meinard’s Island, home to the ruins of Latvia’s oldest stone building – a church built in the early 12th century by Meinard, a monk from Lübeck. Continuing your journey, you’ll arrive at Lielvārde (91). uldevena Wooden Castle is definitely worth a visit here. the castle, mentioned in the Chronicles of Indriķis, has been restored using various ancient buildings as examples. Houses, workshops and reconstructions of historical garments can be seen here. on the very banks of the daugava, where the Castle of the Archbishop of riga stood in the 13th century, you’ll now find romantic ruins, the Lielvarde Manor landscape garden and a small waterfall. If you’re interested in why the hero of Latvia’s most famous epic poem has the ears of a bear, visit the Lāčplēšis Museum dedicated to him. You can also find out more on the legendary Belt of Lielvārde – a traditional part of the Latvian national costume, which has 22 ancient mystical signs woven into it. If you have some time left, it’s worth travelling an additional 45 km towards daugavpils to see the Koknese Castle ruins (92). once the site of a castle of ancient Latvian rulers and later the fortress of riga’s founder Bishop Albert, these are now among Latvia’s most romantic castle ruins. You will need a car to travel the full route, but Ikšķile can also be reached by train (www.ldz.lv) or bus (www.autoosta.lv).

The Gauja National Park is a magnet for nature lovers. Its magnificent landscapes change throughout the seasons: in spring, white bird-cherry blossoms cover its gentle green valleys; in summer, boaters take to the waters of the Gauja River; autumn’s first frosts bring

rainbows of colour to the ancient valleys of Sigulda and Krimulda; and in winter the local hills await skiers, bobsledders and other winter sports enthusiasts. And don’t forget flying in a vertical wind tunnel, 333 sandstone caves and a Soviet nuclear bunker!

LeIsure ACtIVItIes In sIGuLdA

Sigulda is less than 50 km from Riga. Great for a holiday, the town offers excellent leisure opportunities in a stunning natural environment.

on the way to sigulda, 47 km from riga, on the right of the Pskov (Pleskava) highway, you’ll find the unique Aerodium vertical wind tunnel (93), one of the most popular attractions at World expo 2010 in shanghai. the tunnel makes dreams come true – professional trainers help you control the wind and fly! Later, stop at the Mežakaķis (wildcat) (94) adventure park in sigulda. You’ll have to awaken your hidden Mowgli-like agility to overcome the difficult challenges set by this testing forest trail. Popular skiing slope Reiņa trase (95) transforms into a golf course in summer, as well as offering more extreme activities – summer mountain-boarding and roller skating. the breathtaking views at Sigulda Adventure Park (96) make every activity an unforgettable adventure – the tarzan obstacle course, the tobogganing track, sigulda Ferris wheel and more. the Bobsleigh and Luge Track (97), also boasting great views, gives visitors the chance to try rides on the vučko (soft bob), or winter and summer bobs. You will need a car to travel the full route, but sigulda can also be reached by train (www.ldz.lv) or bus (www.autoosta.lv).

In the Middle Ages, Sigulda stood at the boundary of the Riga archdiocese with the lands of the Livonian Order. Three historical centres remain intact today: Sigulda, Turaida un Krimulda.

not far from the centre of sigulda are the Livonian Order castle ruins (98), in summer becoming an open-air concert venue which has played host to the annual sigulda opera Festival for the past 18 years. right next door is the New Sigulda Castle (99) built by Prince Kropotkin – an impressive example of the early 20th century national style. one of sigulda’s most popular tourist attractions is the Gūtmaņala cave (100) – the largest suffusion cave in the Baltic states – slightly further away from the town centre towards turaida. the cave is famous for its enchanting legend – it was carved out by the hands of a local gardener as a meeting place with his beloved rose. the girl was the intended of a Polish officer, but being faithful to her lover, she chose to go her death instead. Turaida Castle (101) is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Latvia. every year, it draws large numbers of visitors as well as local craftsmen with their wares. the 13th century fortress is one of the most impressive monuments of the so-called Brick Gothic style in the Baltic sea region. Fascinating excursions are available at the castle complex, which also includes Vidzeme’s oldest wooden church. At the turaida Museum reserve you can take a walk along the picturesque dainu Hill – a garden of sculptures dedicated to Latvian folk songs and folklore characters.

Latvia’s most popular tourist destination in autumn – discover why!

Krimulda is separated from sigulda by the ancient Gauja river valley, especially vibrant in autumn. on the Krimulda side, take a look at the Krimulda castle ruins (102). Continuing on your way, visit Krimulda Church (103) – one of Latvia’s oldest churches. the church is the starting point for the Kubesele nature trail (104), which offers 3 km of superb scenery and interesting sights.the picturesque Serpentine Road (105), constructed in the 19th century in honour of a visit by the russian Czar Alexander II, leads from Krimulda to sigulda. Hiring a bike or driving are the easiest ways to see sigulda’s most beautiful spots – the large wooden Emperor’s Seat (Ķeizarkrēsls) (106), Festival square and Ferris wheel (107), Gleznotāju (Painters’) Hill (108), with a stunning view of the ancient Gauja river valley, Turaida and its Castle (109), as well as the shops and cafes of Sigulda town centre (110). on the way back to Krimulda you can ride the Sigulda Cable Car (111) – a fantastic way to take in the splendour of the ancient Gauja river valley. real adrenaline seekers can even bungee jump from the cable car!sigulda can be reached by train (www.ldz.lv) or bus(www.autoosta.lv).

The Gauja is Latvia’s most popular river for boating. The stretch between Cēsis and Sigulda is the river valley’s most beautiful, offering wonderful views of Devonian period rock outcrops, ravines, cliffs and sandy beaches.

We recommend Skaļupe (Loud river) (112) as your starting point. For about a kilometre, before reaching the Līgatne Ferry, boaters can enjoy views of the striking sandstone rock outcrops which appear along the Gauja banks for 600 metres. From the boat you can enjoy unhurried views of the Līņu (Tench) Cliffs (113), Enkurakmens (Anchor rock) (114) and the impressive, almost 20m high Spriņģu rock (115). the rapids at this spot make for a bumpier ride. the Līgatne Ferry (116) is also a convenient spot to start your boat trip – at the site of the Gauja’s only ferry. Further along the route you’ll see the reddish Katrīnas rock or Nāru (Mermaid) Cliff (117) that takes its name from the story of a young girl who threw herself into the river because of her unrequited love. the 50m high Gūdu Cliff (118) has some small caves, only visible from the water. Four unknown fossil species have been discovered in the yellow-coloured Launaga (Afternoon tea) Rock (119). nearing sigulda, Turaida Castle (101) rises up from afar – every bend reveals a view worthy of a postcard. You can conclude your boat ride at the Sigulda site (120), closer to turaida Castle, or at the next site, Lielais akmens (Big rock) (121) – closer to sigulda. For more information about organising boat trips, get in touch with the listed tourist information centres.

In the Līgatne area, take in a natural-habitat zoo, 333 caves and a historical paper factory!

the Līgatne Nature Trails (122) are conveniently located near the town of Līgatne, 70 km from riga. they are a must-see for any true nature lover. the 5 km-long nature trails are a showcase of typically Latvian natural scenery and feature an open-air zoo where wild animals and birds native to Latvia live in their natural habitat. Līgatne’s horse breeders also offer horse rides here. Līgatne and its surrounding area are home to the largest concentration of sandstone rocks and artificial caves in Latvia – 333 caves altogether! In times gone by, local residents created them as cellars for storing food for the winter – the countless labyrinths of caves can still be seen today. We recommend doing this in the company of a local guide – it’s not hard to get lost here. the most striking sandstone outcrop in the area is Zvārtes rock (123) on the banks of the Amata river. From the top, you’ll have a superb view of the swift river and the cliffs along its shores – this is one of Latvia’s best-known natural landscapes. the Līgatne Paper Mill (124), on the other hand, is the oldest operating paper manufacturer in Latvia. In its beginnings, the factory relied on a watermill, still in operation today, and factory visitors can see the paper manufacturing process with their own eyes. You will need a car to travel the full route, but Līgatne can also be reached by train (www.ldz.lv) or bus (www.autoosta.lv).

deer GArden, VIenKočI PArK

A route for those looking for quality outdoor relaxation.

the Allaži Nature Trails (125) can be found most easily by driving through sigulda – they are 8 km outside the town (a small part of the route is on unpaved roads). the nature trails are part of a reserve on the ancient shore of the Baltic Ice Lake. Karst sinkholes and other natural phenomena can be observed here. 20 km outside sigulda along an unpaved road, you’ll reach the Saulstari deer safari park (126). the 170-hectare park is home to over 300 animals: red, fallow and white deer, and wild boar. Visitors can help feed the deer and find out more about them. Heading towards Līgatne, you’ll reach Vienkoči Park (127). the park is an unusual woodcraft museum with sculptures and other art objects, created from single pieces of wood by an ancient method, placed along its unspoilt nature trails. the brave can even cross the pond on a log raft. the park also offers evening excursions by torchlight. the perfect spot to end the day is the Līgatne Rehabilitation Centre (128), where the tired can indulge in some health and beauty treatments, while those still feeling active can enjoy the scenery on foot, bicycle or try out nordic walking with poles. You can also venture into the rehabilitation centre cellar to look at a soviet-period top-secret bunker. You can spend the whole day at the rehabilitation centre, whose inclusion in the Lonely Planet Best in travel 2011 book proves you will not be bored.

The medieval town of Cēsis and its surroundings are a real treat for history fans.

not far from Cēsis, Āraiši (129) has a number of sights worth visiting. First of all, the āraiši Lake Castle – a restored 9th century ancient Latvian settlement on an island in the āraiši Lake. the remains of an ancient settlement with approximately 150 buildings were discovered here, and the homes were reconstructed in line with examples found in archaeological excavations. not far from the Lake Castle stand the Livonian order Castle ruins, as well as the 19th century āraiši Lutheran Church. It’s also worth paying a visit to the Vāvere Public House ensemble, which was an important meeting place for Latvian farmers and travellers after it was built in the early 19th century. the romantic āraiši Windmill and miller’s house are also close by. Cēsis (130) is a picturesque town with a history spanning over 800 years. Visit the Cēsis Livonian order Castle – the most impressive and well preserved complex of ruins in Latvia and one of the country’s first stone buildings. next door is the new Castle, now home to the Cēsis Museum of History and Art. You can go on some interesting excursions here, for example, trying out medieval amusements like archery or tests of strength and agility. Also on the must-see list – the town’s crooked, cobblestoned streets, st. John’s Church and rose square, site of important public announcements and punishments in the Middle Ages. CLIFFs And WAterFALLs Around CēsIs

The Cēsis area has more waterfalls and rock outcrops than anywhere else in Latvia!

Ieriķi Watermill Park (131) lies 72 km from riga on the Pleskava (Pskov) highway. on the steep banks of the Melderupīte river, a 300-year-old watermill wall with a restored millwheel completes the park’s romantic feel. the walking trails on the river banks lead to seven waterfalls of varying heights. 8 km towards Kārļi, one of the highest rock outcrops in Latvia rises from the banks of the Amata river – the 45 m Ainavu (Landscape) Cliff (132). the cliff top offers a spectacular view of the ancient Amata valley. Rauna (133) – one of Vidzeme’s loveliest towns – is located 102 km from riga. the rauna Castle ruins stand in the town centre – all that is left of the mighty 13th century residence of the Archdiocese of riga. today the ruins are a beautiful place for walks, especially in the evenings, when the surrounding park is brightly illuminated. the charming rauna Church has been restored several times. the 13th century moulding Adam and eve, as well as the 16th century Christ on the Cross have been preserved inside the church. A couple of kilometres from the town centre, you’ll find the 5m high raunas staburags – a picturesque travertine rock formation, criss-crossed by tens of springs flowing through it into the river. the staburags cliff is covered by over a hundred species of moss and algae. You will need a car to travel the full route, but rauna can also be reached by bus (www.autoosta.lv).

Rāmkalni Leisure Park (137) is located 35 km from riga on the banks of the Gauja river. rāmkalni offers leisure activities for the whole family – summer tobogganing and other fun rides, cycling or boat trips, as well as wonderful views from the restaurant terrace on the waterfront. the whole day can be spent at rāmkalni if you wish. However, continuing your journey towards Limbaži, you’ll discover the romantic Bīriņi Castle (138). the castle’s novel architecture, wonderful park and charming love stories will surprise you. the castle’s owners have always been honourable and respected folk. Visitors can take a tour through the castle museum and landscape garden, go horse riding or take a trip by cart, organise a picnic or enjoy lunch in the castle restaurant. 20 km away, Igate Castle (139) is a fantastic neo-renaissance building which currently houses a romantic hotel and is encircled by a delightfully landscaped garden. on the way back, we recommend taking the riga-tallinn highway. At sunset, stop at Saulkrasti (134), to celebrate the day’s end by watching the sun sink into the sea. You will need a car to travel the full route, but rāmkalni can also be reached by bus (www.autoosta.lv).
