Presents a synthesis of the principal find- ings of a Latin American regional research project whose purpose is to contribute to the improvement of the planning and utilization of water resources, taking especially into account the necessity of conciliating the demands imposed by accelerated economic development and environmental protection. The first part of the document is an analysis of the environmental aspects of water man- agement; this analysis is based on nine case studies presented in the second part. Five of the case studies are concerned with regulated water projects such as irrigation and diver- sion (Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil) and four discuss water systems in urban-indus- trial complexes (Colombia, Chile, Brazil). The second part is comprised of seven indices to the summaries. An indispensable guide to the publications of the major pro- ducers of socioeconomic information on Latin America. The two previous volumes were published in 1977 and 1979 under the title Cladindex.

This year’s annual study of the Latin American economy is divided into two parts. The first covers the economic evolu- tion of Latin America with chapters on the international context, economic growth, the external sector and inflation. The second part describes the economic evolution of the individual countries. Cuba, which appeared in the Esrudio of 1978 for the first time since 1963, is again included.

This document analyses the relationships between foreign trade, employment and the principal instruments of economic integra- tion. It also considers some problems that need to be taken into consideration upon defining a tariff policy and also explains some elements related to the promotion of exports and the substitution of imports within the framework of Central America.
