Fort Sanders, located 2.5 miles South of Laramie, is all but in ruins today. Pictured here is General Ulysses S. Grant and other dignitaries at Fort Sanders in 1868. Ironically Fort Laramie is 2.5 hours Northeast from Laramie.
The rails reached Laramie on May 4, 1868 when construction crews worked through town. A few passengers arrived on that same day.
Laramie is named after a French Canadian mountain man Jacques La Ramee. La Ramee was a fur trapper who loved to explore Wyoming. He brought many fellow fur trappers to the Laramie Area.

Inspired while fly fishing in the Laramie Area, Thomas Edison came up with the idea of the filament light bulb after his fly rod broke in two. Home of the first electrical plant in the Rocky Mountains, Laramie lit up the night sky like a gem, earning the nickname “Gem City of the Plains.”
