--BREAKING NEWS-- A GROUP OF KIDS FOUND OUT THAT BACTERIA IS FOUND IN A BUTTERFLY GARDEN AND IN REGULAR SOIL WHICH ONE HAS THE MOST? HOPEFULLY WE WILL SOON FIND OUT!

Sure! Absolutely! So. Now Landon, will you tell us what led you to your experiment? Excellent! So you said you learned about microbes including bacteria, prior to conducting the experiment. Meghan, could you elaborate on what you already knew and what you had to learn to begin this experiment?Dont you mean you didnt know MULCH about it?Anyways, Sounds like it took quite a bit of time, but it certainly paid off! Rishka, what was some of the specific information you uncovered that helped you proceed with the experiment? Thats great! So lets go to the actual experimental process. How did that work? Well..

Thats some great data! So what was the final result?Wow! Well, thank you all for your time. Back to you, Greta! Landon WarrenWell, it all started one day about a month ago. Meghan, Rishka, and I had a free period and decided to go take a walk outside. About halfway through the walk, we got tired and decided to take a break and sit down right next to the butterfly garden. Meghan noticed a difference between the soil in the butterfly garden and the soil outside of it. Rishka took a look and pointed out that the butterfly gardens soil is comprised of mulch, unlike natural soil. Having recently learned about microbes in Biology class, and being aware of the sought out knowledge relating to bacteria and mulch, I asked: Does whether soil is mulched or not affect bacteria populations? None of us knew the answer so we decided to conduct an experiment!

So going into the experiment we knew that bacteria are single-celled, prokaryoticthey use binary fission to reproduce...and we also knew that although bacteria are harmful in the form of a pathogen, they can also be beneficial. We had these basics, and used them to delve deeper. We researched bacteria and its function in soil! We also had to do a lot of research on mulch since we didnt know much about it. Meghan Donovan

5Rishka MehraWell, some of the research said that mulches can help to maintain soils health by providing moisture, insulation, and keeping it free from any outside disruptions. Since healthy soil has more bacteria, weused this information to hypothesize that the mulched soil would have a greater population of bacteria!

First, we labeled yellow flags to mark the border of our soil plots.

Next, we used the soil core sampler to gather soil from each plot. We then placed each soil sample into its own plastic bag.

Then, we followed the steps for the bacteria serial dilutions.

Next, we collected all of our data. Petrisheets/writing in notebooks9Data Tables
