Lander has evolved into a moderncommunity but the town retains theambience of its colorful western pastand rich cultural legacy.

WindRiver IndianReservation

Lander is a proud neighbor ofthe Wind River Reservation. The

reservation was created in 1868 andis home to the Eastern Shoshone andNorthern Arapaho tribes. One ofthe area’s most famous ancestors,Sacajawea who led Lewis and Clark ontheir expedition across the continent,is buried on the reservation outsideof Fort Washakie.Both the Eastern Shoshone and

the Northern Arapaho have an activecultural life and throughout thesummer, the reservation is alive withthe sound of pounding drums andstamping feet as powwow seasonbrings dancing, horseracing, gamingand other traditional forms of enter-tainment to the Wind River Valley.

South Pass City HistoricalTrail Corridor

In the mid-to-late 1800s, hun-dreds of thousands of pioneers

traveled over South Pass enroute to California, Oregonand Utah. Miners in searchof gold followed the settlersand the towns of South PassCity and Atlantic City wereestablished to feed, house andentertain the men who followed theboom. Today, South Pass City isopen to visitors seeking to step back

into time. Atlantic City is a great placeto stop and eat and enjoy the coolmountain air. You can also tour theHistoric Carissa Gold Mine, whichhas recently been opened for visitors.

Children’s MuseumThe Lander Children’s Museumoffers a variety of hands-on

exhibits and a friendly environmentfor children of all ages.

Art CenterThe Art Center opened in 2002with the help of local artists and a

rural development grant. The centerprovides space for exhibitions andclasses, and promotes the arts in theLander community.

City of BronzeLander is known to many as the“City of Bronze.” It’s easy to

understand why when you see themany bronze statues decorating thetown’s main thoroughfare. Landeralso offers several art galleries forvisitors to purchase quality pieces ofart from well-known local artists.

In 2004, the local Mothersof PreSchoolers (MOPS) inLander had a vision to build amodern playground facility fortheir children. One year later,these determined motherscompleted their fundraisinggoal of more than $200,000.

The dream playground wasconstructed in 2005 byhundreds of communityvolunteers. Modeled afterLander’s Main Street circa1880s, the playgroundincludes one of Lander’sfirst branding slogans“Where the Rails End andthe Trails Begin.”

“When you see all the kidsenjoying this playground, youknow it makes our communitya better place,” said one of theproject leaders, Lisa Lowham.“Lander is a community thatcontinually proves anything ispossible when a communitycomes together. This truly isa very special place to live.”

Within the CityLANDER GOLF CLUB.Lander’s golf course is a summer

paradise for golfers offering 18 holesof amazing golf in one of the leastwindy cities in the country. Fees arelow, the atmosphere is relaxed andthe course challenges golfer’s of alllevels—how can you go wrong?

4th of JulyThe largest event inLander centers

around our 4th of JulyParade and the oldestpaid Rodeo in theworld. During this time,the population of Landertriples in size to about 20,000 people.For three days, the community enjoysan old-style rodeo complete withroping, bull riding, wild horse relaysand barrel races. Then on July 4th,the Pioneer Days Parade brings theOld West back to life. After theparade, you can enjoy the LanderRotary Club Buffalo Barbeque atCity Park, with music and fun for allages. To cap the fun, at night the skyover town lights up with fireworksdisplays from the city and privatecitizens celebrating the nation’sbirthday.

meet the mushers and dogs up close.

The National Outdoor LeadershipSchool (NOLS) is the world’spremier outdoor education organi-zation. NOLS takes students ofall ages on extended wildernessexpeditions to teach outdoor skills,develop leadership, and teachabout the natural environment.Lander was selected as the locationfor the non-profit school becauseof the community’s easy access tothe Wind River Mountains. Over thelast 45 years, NOLS has expandedto 14 wilderness classroom locationsaround the world.

In 2009, NOLS was selected forthe second year in a row as one ofOutside Magazine’s “Best Placesto Work”.

“NOLS is totally committed toLander,” says Bruce Palmer, theschool’s admission and marketingdirector. “It is an outdoorperson’smecca and an incredible commu-nity. Lander Christian Academy isan elementary school that
