PRESIDENT-elect NoynoyAquino wants to be called P.Noy which stands forPresident Noy or People'sPresident. I prefer the latterbecause Noynoy is indeedthe President of the 16million plus Filipinos whocast their votes for him. Theothers who failed to vote buthave Noynoy in their hearts.P. Noy is slowly coming outof his shell and I've noticedthat he's quite consistent inhis pronouncements. Con-sistency is a trademark of a

P. Noy promiseleader who is not easilyswayed by what his adviserstell him to do. P. Noy listensbut it's his decision still thatmatters at the end of the day.For one, he was firm not toretain military chief DelfinBangit who is a lapdog ofoutgoing President Arroyo. Idon't know if he could bedictated by his irreverentsister Kris who is a perennialmagnet for controversy.

P. Noy is a promisingleader. He knows what hewants and appears bent in

implementing much neededreforms in the government. What his beloved motherfailed to do, he shouldaccomplish and accomplishmore he should. P. Noy is nolonger basking in the shad-ows of his martyred father. He appears comfortablefacing the media and seemsunfazed when grilled. P. Noyis articulate, talks sense andhas a sense of humor. In fact,P. Noy is more interestingthan Kris who keeps nosecrets in the public.

P. Noy's sisters serve ashis support system. Viel,Ballsy, Pinky and Kris are theFirst Sisters who will sharethe limelight with theirbrother for the next six years.Except for Kris who lovesattention, the three surely

Move on sabi nga.

Sabi nga ng isang karakter sa isang pelikula – if you don’ttrust your government, trust your country.

prefer to work in the side-lines. Among them, Viellooks promising as theunofficial spokesperson forthe family.

Kris, a very competenttelevision host and engagingtalker, should not do thetalking at all because she'sshowbiz and is tactless mostof the times.

Her honesty is an assetbut she’s “over” sometimesand that's not good for herbrother and for the countryas well.

What Kris should do is to

help promote readingbecause I understand thatshe's a voracious reader.Ballsy is like the reincar-nated Cory who should actas P. Noy's number oneadviser in matters of the Stateand heart.

P. Noy obviously issurrounded by a very goodsupport system starting withhis family. I just hope andpray that P. Noy will appointgood people who will servethis country selflessly andwill not steal. We pin ourhopes on Noy.

She said Palace has offered the joint cabi-net meeting as a proper venue to clarify thingson the different departments before the Aquinogovernment takes over on June 30.

According to Horn, it was President GloriaMacapagal-Arroyo who proposed a jointcabinet meeting.

“We offer this as assistance to them. But ifthey refused, we will respect that,” Horn said.

Piston wants P8 not P.25 fuel price cutMILITANT transport group Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga

Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON) has called on the oilcompanies to implement a big time one time roll back of P8 andnot a measly 25 centavos on their oil products.

George San Mateo, Piston secretary general, said the pumpprices of the oil companies, particularly the so called Big 3, arestill high despite the 25 centavos cut in diesel and 50 centavos ingasoline.

This developed as Piston officials also called on President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to include among his priori-ties in his first 100 days the issues of overpricing, profiteeringand cartel. This is aside from the scrapping of the oil deregula-tion law and lifting of expanded value added tax that will pavethe way for the reduction of fuel prices.

Earlier, seven transport groups filed a petition before the LandTransportation Franchising and Regulatory Board asking for aP1 increase on the minimum fare and 25 centavos for the suc-ceeding kilometers for jeeps plying in Metro Manila and Regions3 and 4. Kim Pascual

CALOOCAN City Mayor Enrico “Recom”Echiverri boosted the local government’s cam-paign against the spread of rabies, a virusthat is contracted through animal bites suchas dogs and other stray animals.

Echiverri said catching the disease fromthe bites of such animals is no joke since itcould lead to the deterioration of a person’sphysical health or in extreme cases causesdeath.

Because of this, the mayor has ordered thecity health department to disseminate infor-mation about stopping rabies.

The city health department earlier con-ducted a dialogue on rabies prevention, whichwas attended by barangay officials, non-gov-ernment organizations (NGOs) and represen-tatives from other sectors.

Among the points tackled in the dialogue, which was of great use to the attendees, were tips on how to give first aid to thosebitten by rabies-carrying dogs so that thespread of the virus in the victim’s body maybe halted.

In line with this, personnel from the cityveterinary office have been making roundsfor the purpose of plucking stray dogs andother animals that could be carriers of rabiesoff the streets.

The city health office said that once thedogs are in the custody of the city veterinaryoffice, they would be checked up to find outwhether they have rabies or not.

The local government has beenproviding free anti-rabies injections as apreventive measure against the spread ofthe disease.

Maps to Save the Davao Gulf UnveiledFOR centuries, maps

have guided people’spaths and actions.

Recent technologynow shows us how to saveone of the most produc-tive marine areas inMindanaoWith a sharedinterest to conserve theDavao Gulf’s marinebiodiversity and to pro-mote sustainable devel-opment for local commu-nities, WWF-Philippinesand the Davao Gulf Man-agement Council(DGMC) have conducteda comprehensive Envi-ronmental SensitivityIndex (ESI) mapping ex-ercise to assess thegulf’s sensitivity to oilspills, soil leaching andother environmental dis-turbances.

Funded by the HongKong and ShanghaiBanking Corporation(HSBC) and launched in2007, the Davao Gulf ESImaps will serve as toolsin land use planning, oil

spill or marine pollutionresponse operations aswell as the proper use ofagro-chemicals.

Founded on the con-cept and methodology ofESI mapping, it exam-ines two of the country’spressing environmentalissues – oil spil l inci-dence and the potentialfor groundwater contami-nation.

A Haven for Life-Davao Gulf ranks as oneof the priority conserva-tion areas of the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Eco-region. It is a breedingand nursery ground forsmall and large pelagicspecies, with frequentsightings of whalesharks, dugongs andleatherback turtles, among the list of speciescited in the Conventionon the International Tradeof Endangered Species(CITES). Beneath thewaters of the gulf lies aparadisiacal abode of

brimming tropical ma-rine species.

Davao has longbragged of its coral reefs, making it a favoriteamong divers, tourists, investors, business op-portunists, scientists andconservationists alike.Beset by Pollution & De-velopment Sadly, theDavao Gulf is beingthreatened by the veryeconomic activit ies itsupports.

Seen along the coastare ports, oil depots, fac-tories and other capital-intensive industries thatare perceived to exertpressure on the qualityof the water, the naturalhabitats and the produc-tivity of its fisheries.

Environmental ex-ploitation by humansgradually surfaced aslocal communities sankdeeper into crevices ofpoverty – an effect of agrowing population.

Fish yields de-

creased, leading many toadopt destructive fishingmethods in order to sur-vive.

A 2006 study revealedthat less than 20% of thegulf’s coral reefs remainin good condition. Peopleare now pinning theirhopes on the aquacultureindustry, which producesseaweeds, milkfish andtilapia to compensate forever-decreasing fishyie lds.

Pollution is anothermajor menace: fertilizersand pesticides used byvarious plantations aswell as mine tailings of-ten contaminate ground-water and other bodiesof water through run-offor leaching.

Oil tankers and ves-sels traversing the gulfthreaten it as well withthe possibil ity of oil orchemical spil ls.

The gulf’s myriad in-dustrial plants also spewout sewage. Local

wastes from communi-ties plus oil sludge fre-quently place marine lifein danger.

Progress for theDavao Gulf usuallymeans urban develop-

ment – at great cost tothe environment.

Says DGMC Chair-man Leo Avila, “Overthree mill ion people infour cities and 18 munici-palit ies live around the

gulf: thousands rely onit for food and livelihood.Reduced productivity willhave dire consequencesso we should concentrateon protecting what assetsremain.”

P i o n e e r i n gTomorrow’s Solutions,TodayClimate change isthe most serious and per-vasive threat to human-ity.

Amongst the mostpractical ways of deal-ing with it is to strengthenthe resilience of naturalresources - this meanspreparing Philippinecoasts, mountains andcities for unexpected im-pacts, such as oil spillsand floods. As a topecological solutions-pro-vider, WWF-Philippineshas long pioneered ESImapping for oil spil ls,developing the country’sfirst ESI map inBatangas. WWF and thePhilippine Coast Guardalso conducted commu-nity-based oil spil l re-sponse training and work-shops for the Davao Gulf.

It was just a speck, a tiny foreign object flyingthrough the air on a windy day while I was cuttingthe grass. Somehow that speck made its way into myleft eye.

For the next few hours that little speck causedquite a bit of irritation. I tried washing it out. Mywife, Sue, a nurse, tried everything she could think of.Finally, we went to a Med Center, where the medicalpersonnel on duty couldn’t get it out either. Only afterapplying some ointment and waiting several more an-noying hours did I get relief from the speck.

This tiny, nagging irritant made me think anewabout Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 7 about criticizingothers. My first thought was to be impressed with thepracticality of Jesus’ illustration. Using the effectiveliterary tool of hyperbole, or exaggeration, He explainedfor His listeners how foolish it is for a person to criti-cize someone without seeing that he or she is alsoguilty of error. If you can find someone else’s littlespeck while ignoring the hunk of wood in your owneye, something’s wrong. It should be unthinkable toignore our own faults while pointing out someoneelse’s.

An attitude of self-righteousness has no place inthe Christian life. That should be plain to see.

A Prayer: Lord, help me not to get caught up inpointing out the “little” sins in others’ lives, whileignoring my own glaring sin. I’m thankful that withrepentance comes forgiveness. Amen.

Inspect your own life before you look for specks inothers.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lak-ers are down 3-2 in the NBA finals againstan old foe that keeps finding new ways tobeat them.

They’ll need a big Hollywood ending toescape with another championship — andthat's exactly where they'll make their laststand against the Boston Celtics.

Game 6 is back home Tuesday (Wednes-day Manila time) at Staples Center, wherethe Lakers are 9-1 in the postseason, witheverybody from Kobe Bryant to the Lakers'bedraggled bench playing with much morepassion and confidence.

“If you look at it, they’ve come home and car-ried the 3-2 lead back,” Lakers coach Phil Jack-son said. “It’s basically home court, home court. Now we're going back to home court to win it.That’s the way it's supposed to be, isn't it?”

Two straight losses in Boston led to a direseries deficit for the Lakers, who hadn’t eventrailed in any playoff series this season. TheCeltics have won three of the last four games, and they’re responsible for Los Angeles’ onlyhome loss of the playoffs.

So why didn’t Jackson or Bryant seemparticularly worried before they headed outon their final cross-country flight of thepostseason? Throughout a trying seasonfilled with injuries and big-game setbackssince a Christmas Day loss to Cleveland, theLakers have always been able to rise whenthey absolutely needed to do it.

Jackson even described the Lakers’ lockerroom as “spirited” after losing Game 5 intheir lowest-scoring performance of thepostseason in the 92-86 loss. For all theirstruggles in Boston, the Lakers realize theyonly have to defend their home court to wintheir 16th title.

Cotto prepares for rematch

COACH Emanuel Steward, trainer of WorldBoxing Association (WBA) super welter-weight champion Miguel Cotto, expressedconfidence that his ward will come out a bet-ter fighter if given a chance for a rematch withpound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

Cotto, who knocked out Yuri Foreman forhis third world title last week in New York City,is considered the plan B for Pacquiao's No-vember 13 fight date should a summit meetingwith Floyd Mayweather Jr. fail to materialize.

Former welterweight champion AntonioMargarito of Tijuana, Mexico has also beennamed as a possible opponent.

“I would very much entertain a rematchwith Pacquiao and Cotto,” Steward, an In-ternational Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, said in a report on gmanews.tv.

“It would be very different if they fight againnow that [Cotto] has his team put together justthe way he wants it. He’s just a better balancedfighter now. He will be able to utilize his box-ing talents a lot more than the last fight wherehe fought with his head down too low. Mannywas actually the taller fighter in the fight andhe’s only 5’6”. Miguel has a lot more mentalconfidence now than he did before.”

Outside of the opportunity to win an eighthworld title in as many divisions, a rematchwith Cotto would prove little for the boxerwho won a congressional seat in the prov-ince of Sarangani.

Then the reigning World Boxing Organi-zation (WBO) welterweight champion, Cottowas highly competitive for the first two roundsbefore being dropped in the third and fourthrounds.
