As the sun rises over the serene, private lake, nature awakens.

Swallows soar, starlings lift from the surrounding reeds, heron and egret join other anglers in pursuit of rising bass, intent on this morning’s fare of hatching insects. As the day progresses, flocks of duck and geese land in formation on the lake’s mirror surface, their wakes criss-crossing the water with geometric patterns. As dusk falls, starlings return to settle back in for a peaceful night’s rest.

And such is the cycle of life on this expanse of rippling water nestled amid sixteen acres of hidden glen between surrounding hills of vineyard and pasture land. No matter the encounter, whether through active pursuits like canoeing or fishing, or in mere reflection and contemplation, one's life is profoundly enriched by the experience of living in nature.

A landscape served by nature

I n the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright’s observation that “a house should be of

a hill, belonging to it so hill and house can live together, each the happier for the other”, this home was designed to take full advantage of the dictates of topography. Inspired by the country house designs of Robert Stern and Hugh Jacobson, Napa architect, Robert Gregory, sited the house to take full advantage of scenic lake and vineyard

views from each and every room. The site, carefully chosen to the rear of the lake, far from the noise of Westside Road, reveals itself slowly in a gradual process of unveiling as one approaches along the private road. A cluster of pavilions in a blend of Euro-styles–– French with Italian influences–– interconnect around the site, assuring the affinity of built environment with the land.

Natural surroundings afford unlimited pastoral pursuits

O pportunities abound for the wine country lifestyle you’ve

always dreamed of. Cultivating your favorite variety of wine grapes on the terraced vineyards. Planting your own cutting garden for daily fresh flowers. Harvesting heirloom tomatoes and farm-fresh salad greens from a walled potager. Or bringing friends and family together for a spirited game of Petanque and outdoor picnic.

This isn’t just life. This is living.

Gracious, old-worldly, country living

A Tuscan style wood-burning fireplace anchors the large volume living room with 20 foot arched

ceiling. Floor to ceiling windows stream natural light while providing a backdrop of scenic vineyard and lake views. In tribute to the influences of Italian architecture, a colonnade flanks the front door, creating an entry passage which opens onto other rooms of the home.

The formal dining room flows through French doors to an outdoor dining patio. On warm summer nights, guests can enjoy both venues as food and wine service progress.

B y farmhouse tradition, the country kitchen is acknowledged

as the gathering place where family and friends retreat at the end of the day to share a meal and glass of wine. To add intimacy, the spacious, wood-beamed room is divided into separate seating areas for dining and for relaxing before the dry stack stone fireplace. Adjoining food-preparation workspace easily accommodates multiple chefs and culinary provisioning. Camargue limestone countertops, tumbled granite and a hand-painted Tuscan vent hood imbue the space with warmth and old-world charm.

A sanctuary of pleasure and privacy

T he expansive master suite occupies its own pavilion in the wrap-around style

of the home. French doors open onto a private terrace, bringing the outdoor vista inside. The Italian style fireplace is flanked by two-story windows, affording sweeping views of both lake and surrounding hills.

Adjoining master bath suite features a large walk-in closet, dressing area, spa tub and double vanity. The mirror’s reflection of the view from the picture window atop the tub creates the illusory impression of a room completely suspended in nature.
