Dear Wonderful LFP Families,
Spring is blooming and so are our amazing students! Second – sixth grade students just finished taking the SRI reading comprehension test and students made incredible gains in their reading scores. Thank you for having your child read every night at home. It truly makes a difference. Some of our readers represented our school at the Global Reading Regional competition last Thursday and earned second place in the competition! Congratulations to Linnea, Nova, Hanan, Josephine, Jamie, and Dan! Our students are also stretching themselves in PTA and school enrichment classes such as Jump Rope Club, Girls on the Run, Steel Drums and the School Play. Our students had fun at the Science Fair and Egg Drop last Thursday. Congratulations to Helena Stein, Elliot Gawlinski, and Britany Morales for winning the sixth grade awards. I saw some very creative STEM egg containers by our third and fourth graders! Thank you PTA and Kelly Knickerbocker for a fun movie night and to Nik and Zin Dembrow for the great Science Fair and Egg Drop. It was wonderful to see so many parents and community members at the PTA LFP auction Saturday night. Thank you to all who donated items, helped with art projects, or purchased items at the auction. It was a fun night raising a large amount of money, which will benefit our students. We continue to improve our school’s safety by practicing monthly drills and we recently had our external doors rewired to now require a key card to enter. We have reduced the amount of external entrances to our campus. This allows us to push a button in the front office to quickly put our building in lockdown mode if necessary. It does mean that parents and students will experience times when you will need a staff member to unlock a door for you. We know that this can be inconvenient, but we feel that safety of our students is the priority. To learn more about our lockdown procedure, please see the presentation on our school website under Resources School Safety. Our salmon are ready for their journey to the Puget Sound. You are all invited to Brookside Elementary on Friday, April 13th at 4:00 pm to help us release our salmon for their journey starting in McAleer Creek. We have three classes of incoming Kindergarten students starting this fall. We look forward to welcoming all of our new LFP Dolphins! Thank you for all of your wonderful support of our school.

Needed: Supplies for the “Buddy Box” Spring is here and the recess “Buddy Box” is open again. Kids love to pay games, draw, read and talk with friends at the “buddy table. What we need are some new supplies for kids to play with.
Some ideas are: playing cards, card games such as Spot It, checkers, colored chalk, colored pencils/pens with no caps, crayons, mechanical pencils, brainteasers, activity/coloring books, crossword puzzles, dot-to-dot, mazes, kendama (Japanese yoyo), jump ropes, or any other activities kids may enjoy at recess.
Please drop off donations in the box marked “Buddy Box” located in the PTA office. Thank you!

Hi-Cap Summer TestingSummer testing be offered in July. Testing will only be open to Shoreline students who have not been screened or tested during the 2017-18 school year. More information will come out after the Spring testing session is done. However, we want to be sure families know. More information can be found on the Highly Capable webpage.

School Start Date for 2018-19 The first day of school for the 2018-19 school year will be Wednesday, August 29th (before Labor Day). Students who do not attend the first four days of the school year must be withdrawn and this makes it difficult for class placements. Please plan your family
vacations accordingly. The last day of school will be June 14, 2019.
Kindergarten Enrollment 2018-19Kindergarten enrollment is underway for children who will be five years old by August 31, 2018.

Join us at the Lake Forest Park Elementary School Cafeteria to honor children and celebrate
childhood with our annual Día del Niño Event. Celebrated worldwide at various times throughout the year. Día del Niño is all about the little ones. We'll be offering one and a half hours of fun for children of all ages, including a piñata, interactive games, hands-on arts and crafts and much more. This is a free event put on by Natural Leaders of LFP. This will be a potluck event. Please bring your favorite dish for sharing.

Seeking Volunteers For The May 2018 Lake Forest Park School Library's Scholastic Book Fair
The Lake Forest Park Library will host a Scholastic Book Fair from Friday, May 18th through the Open House on the evening of Thursday, May 24th. Our annual Scholastic Book Fair helps the Lake Forest Park School Library purchase new books for our students to read and for teachers to use in instruction.
We are seeking adult volunteers to help set up, cashier, pack up, and help students during lunch recess and after school sales. Children are welcome to join you if you volunteer for the set up or pack up.

Spring has sprung and so has the possibility of Lice. Please start checking heads and know that they are common in school age children. Lice are unable to fly or jump. Direct head to head contact, affected person sharing hats or brushes or combs,
transmits them. Lice do not live on animals and cannot live off of a human host more that 24 hours. Please refer to the www.headlice.org site for the latest information. You are more than welcome to contact me in the health office if you have further questions. Attention: Parents of 5th Graders - Is Your Child 11 Years Old??
When your child turns 11, they are now ready for their Tdap boosters, which are required for state immunizations and entrance into the 6th grade. Please check with your physician and make an appointment.
Washington State HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Requirements
In 1988 the Washington State Legislature passed the AIDS Omnibus Act. This act mandates HIV/AIDS prevention education beginning in Grade 5 and continuing through Grade 12. Districts must adhere to the following criteria when developing an HIV/AIDS prevention education curriculum:
Beginning no later than Grade 5, students shall receive yearly instruction in the life-threatening dangers of HIV/AIDS, its transmission, and its prevention.
· At least one month before teaching HIV/AIDS prevention education in any classroom, each district must notify parents and guardians that instruction will take place. To be taught April-June.
· A student may be removed from HIV/AIDS prevention education if the student’s parent or guardian, having attended one of the district presentations, objects in writing to such participation.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Greetings, LFP community!
I will be transmitting to you monthly to give updates about things that are happening in the counseling program at LFP, as well as things that you can try or consider at home with your kids.
I have emailed folks before about the dangers of screen time, and I want to revisit the issue now, as the days get longer and our opportunities for fresh air and exploration abound. This is an important thing to consider for kids. Screen time should be limited - visit the American Association of Pediatrics at www.aap.org (scroll down for the media and children link) to see recommended doses of screen time based on the age of your child.
It is also important to consider our own screen use as adults! In order to teach children how to interact with others, it is imperative to lead by modeling! Having one’s face buried in a phone in the presence of your child is sending the message that the phone is more important than them. Doing so on a daily basis, throughout a childhood, can have a significant effect.
Ideas I have heard from parents around the community: 1. Locking all devices up at a certain time every night (say, 7:30 pm) 2. Having technology-free nights (say, Tuesday and Thursday) 3. Nightly family game time or art time
It is important to hold ourselves accountable! Children pick up on our habits. There is no substitute for positive human interaction in the growth of a young child. And an iPad should not a be stress management strategy or solution.

Shoreline STEM Festival & Science Fair
It’s time to start getting ready for the Shoreline STEM Festival, which will take place on May 5, 2018 at Shoreline Community College, with a K-12 student science fair, hands-on STEM fun, and robotics demonstrations! Now is the time to start a project for the science fair with three categories to choose from: • Science Investigation • Engineering Design and Invention • Computer Science Design and Invention
All entries will require submittal of a project proposal. You can turn yours in starting January 21, 2018 until April 6, 2018. Registration and entrance to the festival are all completely FREE!

Panelists will include:
Dr. Lori Lynass has over 20 years of experience working to support student, families and schools. She has worked directly with over 700 schools, in over 90 districts and 3 state departments of education on their implementation of academic and behavioral systems of support. She is the proud parent of two Shoreline students, ages 9 and 12. Tom Doggett is in his second year as counselor at Lake Forest Park Elementary. Mr. Doggett leads mindfulness practices regularly with the LFP student body. Prior to becoming a school counselor, he worked with as a children’s advocate at a shelter for survivors of domestic violence. Sara Harvey Yao is a leadership consultant who has developed and trained more than 4,000 leaders across the globe. Ms. Yao specializes in helping leaders navigate pressure and stress by staying present in the moment, and is the author of two books, Get Present and Drop In: Lead With Deeper Presence and Courage. She has two children, ages 12 and 15, attending Shoreline schools. Linette Bixby is a WA State Certified Teacher and a Certified Mindful Schools Instructor. Ms. Bixby has provided mindfulness instruction for staff and students at Kellogg, LFP and Shorecrest, and has conducted small group stress reduction sessions for teens. She is a Shoreline resident and parent of two kids, ages 16 and 20. Cher Anderton, MSW, LSWAIC is a mental health therapist in Shoreline whose practice focuses on trauma, anxiety, depression and parent coaching. Mrs. Anderton is also a certified Positive Discipline Parent Instructor and a school counselor at Echo Lake Elementary. She and her husband are Shoreline residents and have four children, ages 17, 16, 13 and 11.
