Another June...
Hello everyone. On behalf of the staff at Lady Grey, I would like to thank parents, volunteers, PAC mem-
bers, other school staff and community members for contributing to our school this year. We are fortu-
nate to have such an extended and supportive Lady Grey community! On behalf of Mrs. MacDougall
and myself, I would like to thank all staff at Lady Grey for the hard work and dedication you put into
our school.
Lady Grey hosted two Community Field Experience students
from UBC for the last 3 weeks. Ms. Lam and Mme Jamayca
were at Lady Grey to experience teaching and living in the
Purcell Mountains. The student teachers assisted in Ms Sin-
clair and Mme Fouillard’s classes.
On Saturday, June 8, several Golden Zone staff members of
Rocky Mountain School District were recognized for their
service to the school district. Congratulations to Ms.
Giesbrecht and Mme Ozust on their retirement. We wish
you good health, joy and happiness in your upcoming adven-
tures. You will be missed.
Mrs. Chaluck and Ms. Fraser will be on a leave for the 2019-
20 school year. Mrs. Chaluck’s replacement will be Mrs. Jeffer-
son. Both Mrs. Chaluck and Ms. Fraser are scheduled to return
for the 2020-21 school year.
On the following pages, we have some summer reading tips to share with you, and information about
the library’s summer reading program. Also, we don’t want to forget about engaging your child in nu-
meracy activities over the summer. Please see page two for a link to an informative article and ways to
engage your child during summer holidays.
Lastly, on behalf of Lady Grey, I wish you a happy and relaxing summer. Hopefully you and your chil-
dren will get to spend time with family and friends making memories.

Ways to Support Numeracy at Home
According to the Harvard Graduate School of Education, students can lose up to 2.6 months (or more) of
learning in math over the summer (https://www.gse.harvard.edu/news/uk/16/06/summer-math-loss). The
article gives some suggestions to help alleviate summer math loss:
Highlight the math in everyday activities - When shopping, have kids estimate the total cost, calculate
change or discounts. When cooking, try halving or doubling a recipe and assist kids in determining the
new proportions. If parents are doing any building or measuring, have kids assist with the measuring
tape. Use Flash Cards while driving.
Play games that involve math - Yahtzee, card games such as Cribbage, Snap, Black Jack or 21, 31. Other
great games include Monopoly, Ticket to Ride, dice games, playing blocks and assembling jigsaw puzzles.
Find a small way to practice math at home - online questions of the day such as

Yes, You Can Forget How to Read
Many people think learning to read is like learning how
to ride a bicycle – once you have it, you can’t forget.
Actually, reading is more like learning to ice-skate.
Even a proficient skater who doesn’t skate for several
years will find it difficult to skate when placed back on
the ice. The skates feel strange, the balance is wobbly,
the speed isn’t there. In a similar way, even a proficient
reader can lose those skills if they go unused for a long
time.
So read all summer. It’s relaxing in the sunshine, and
you and your family will come back in the fall in high
gear for achievement.
Summer Reading Ideas for Families
Be Prepared for a Flood
Don’t leave home without it is a motto for the summer. Never travel anywhere, even for a day trip, without a
book. You can read at the border, waiting for a ferry, waiting in a restaurant, down at the beach – anywhere
where you have little to do and time to have some fun in the sun.
The Great Tent Read-In
If your yard is suitable, and you have a tent, what about a Great Tent Read-In? Have neighbourhood friends
bring a sleeping bag and sleep out in the tent. Bring snacks, books and flashlights. Read in the dark. Tell
stories…even scary ones…or round robin stories where each person adds more to the plot.
Reading in the Car/Reading on the Road
If it doesn’t bother you, why not read aloud in the car? Don’t forget books-on-tape which can be borrowed
from the library. Wherever you go, take pictures of family members reading a book, reading a tour guide,
reading a map. These make wonderful additions to family memories.
Summer Reading Possibilities:

-Read the newspaper.
-Read a map and draw a route to
your holidays.
-Read a magazine article.
-Read a cereal box.
-Read the label on a can.
-Read a set of game instructions.

From July 4th to August 1st the Golden public library will be offering the Summer Reading Club for children
aged 5-12 on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 pm-3:00 pm. This is a FREE program featuring crafts, songs,
jokes, riddles, games, prizes, reading, and so much more. To register, or for more info, come down and see
us at the Okanagan Regional Library (819 Park Drive) or call 250-344-6516.
Parent Advisory Committee
We have come to the end of another awesome year. Wow does time fly! We would like to thank all that volunteered for anything throughout the year Hot Lunch Volunteer's, classroom and field trip volunteers, Spring Fling helpers and station creators, Thank you to all that contributed and raised funds with our fundraisers this year these were all a success. The PAC was able to contribute to cross-country and downhill skiing, swimming, Cir-kids, Tim Horton's Camp for grade 7's. We helped send future young leaders from the LGES Youth Take Charge group to To-ronto for a conference, contributed to the school recycling program, provided many bus rides to and from activities have passed a motion for a paving stone platform for the outdoor classroom. We would like to give a special thank you to Navneet Rondeau, our volunteer coordinator, for being the glue that has held PAC together the past 4 years, she will be greatly missed. Also special stars for serving the board; Jacqueline Farnsworth as secretary, sadly this is her last year with us. Linda Pecora as Treasurer. Andrea Sherriff as Hot Lunch Coordinator. Angela Croft as Fundraiser. Kris Bostock Poinsetta fundraiser/member at large. Sheilagh England as a member at large. Nicole Kriese as President. We will be looking to fill the following positions next year 2019-2020.

Spring Fling
On Thursday, May 30, Lady Grey Elementary PAC hosted the annual Spring Fling. We had a great turn-
out of students, parents and community members. Thank you to all the parents, staff and students that
helped make this event happen. Also thanks to Mr. Badenoch and the GSS Foods class for supplying the
lovely cakes for the cake walk—they were a hit. PAC raised over $2000 to support field trips and other
initiatives. A special thanks to the Golden Dolphin Swim club and Golden Rotary for the use of their
tents. The Lady Grey community would like to thank Navneet Rondeau for organizing the event!
Bike & Hike On Friday, June 14, students at Lady Grey participated in the Bike and Hike. We would like to thank all the parent volunteers. We would like to thank Jon Simpson from Derailed Sports for coming to Lady Grey and helping us get our bikes ready for the trails. We would like to thank the Golden Cycling Club and the Town of Golden for maintaining accessible, high-quality trails. Finally, we would like to thank all of our families who provide their children with bikes and helmets that fit. This is the time to develop fundamental movement skills and lifelong habits, and biking plays a huge role in keeping the world active! Thank you to Mme Rebecka for the pictures
National Indigenous Peoples Day
On Friday, June 21, majority of Lady Grey students celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day by visiting the
Blaeberry Flats. Students participated in fort building, traditional drumming and singing, hunting skills, nature
hiking, knot tying, boat races, and rock painting. Thank you to Mrs. MacDougall and Mme Lambert for the
pictures!
Tim Horton’s Leadership Program As the school year ends Lady Grey and Nicholson Elementary Schools grade 7’s had the opportunity to attend Tim Hortons Camp twice this school year, once in the fall and again in the spring. What an amazing experience we had at the camp and with completing our community project. Our project included painting the cement picnic tables in various locations around town. As part of our community service project through Tim Hortons Foundation, the students and staff talked about places they wanted to improve in our community. We painted seven picnic tables that include inclusive, kind messages, and created art to brighten up and leave tourists and community members feeling welcomed when they are in the Golden. We had a Community Movie Night fundraiser in the winter raising money for supplies and also received funding support from the Town of Golden. The picnic tables look wonderful and what an added addition to the art in our community. Locations include two by the Kicking Horse River by the Pedestrian Bridge, Hospi-tal, Kinsmen, and Kumsheen Parks. Check them out next time you’re out and about in town! Thank you to Interior Health and the Town of Golden for allowing us to paint the picnic tables for our community pro-ject. I am excited to tell you that, Lady Grey and Nicholson Elementary Schools classes of 2019- 2020, grade 7 students have been invited to participate in the Community Leaders Program with the Tim Hortons Chil-dren’s Foundation next school year! The Community Leaders Program (CLP) provides students with two leadership focused camp experiences at the Tim Hortons Children’s Ranch in Kananaskis, Alberta. In addi-tion to attending camp at the Ranch, the students will participate in a Community Service Project and an Individual SMART Goal. The most amazing part of this program is that its FREE, no cost to the family or the school. The Fall Tim Hortons Children Ranch Camp Dates for 2019-2020 are: Wednesday September 18th, 2019 to Friday September 20th, 2019. As a school we are very excited about this program. Grade 7 Farewell
The Grade 7 Farewell was held Thursday, June 20. Thank you to all parents and staff that had a
role in planning the event. Parents decorated and baked cupcakes, decorated the gym, and provid-
ed the fruit trays. The evening was a great success.
Drama Club
The Drama Club has been busy filming “Scoobie Doo and the Ghoul School”. Thank you to Mrs. Morris for
your leadership and direction. Filming wrapped up on Monday. Once editing has been completed, we are
hoping to show it during a lunch time - this will happen in the upcoming school year.
